BICAS - ENGINE INDICATION AND CREW
ALERTING SYSTEM (GENERAL ELECTRIC
Ce6-80c2P SERTES ENGINES)
Purpose
Today's aircraft can provide full-time
monitoring of engine parameters and
Birplane gystens through the use of the
@ngine indication and crew alerting
system, or EICAS
‘hie lesson will familiarize the
student with the BICAS system used with
GENERAL ELECTRIC CF6-S0C2F SERIES
engines.
‘This lesson introduces the basic
concept of EICAS including operation,
control, and interface
BICAS Gisplays two types of data,
standard and optional, which vary with
Customers. This lesson uses ail
@isplay options to show the capability
of BICAS. APPENDIX A contains the
Specific configuration of displays for
‘your airplane

General
Flight Crew Advantages - EICAS offers
improved Fight conparenent management
= Improved BITE monitoring and
displays
~ Reducing crew workload through
effective monitoring of engine
parameters
= Displaying COMMUNICATION messages
~ Displaying system STATUS messages
through all phases of flight from
power-up through postflight
maintenance:
= Displaying color-coded ALERT
meseages (Warnings, Cautions, and
hdvisories) that communicate both
abnormal conditions and their
Urgency to the crew.

Maintenance Features - EICAS provides
gn improved level of maintenance data
for the ground crew. “This decign
allows EICAS to automatically record
Subsystem parameters when malfunctions
are detected, and to provide reports
and fault histories during BITE mode.
Flight or ground crews can also create
@ manual recording of subsystem
paraneters through the use of single
pushbutton, This eliminates the need
For extensive hand recording of
malfunctions and performance data
‘These features will:
- Increase the quality and accuracy of
maintenance data recordings:
= Improve the communications between
flight and ground crews.
~ Reduce the flight crew workload

EICAS-GENERAL OPERATION
operation
BICAS is designed to provide autonated
systens monitoring and data display for
all phases of airplane operation, from
power-up through post élight
Raintenance. Numerous features are
Uncluded to minimize crew workload
during both normal and abnormal
Operations. The EICAS’s automatic and
Ranual recording features eliminate the
heed for hand recording of systems and
performance data.
Other features are included to assure
crew awareness of system status
changes.
Normal Sequence
operational displays are changed by
pressing the STATUS and ENGINE switches
bn the display select panel. when the
STATUS or ENGINE switch is pushed a
second time, the display reverts to the
nornal mode’ (lower sereen blank). when
fall time fuel flow (option) is
selected, the lower display is
considered blank even though fuel flow

RICAS operations during @ normal flight
are shown on the diagram. At power Up,
all engine parameters automatically
Spear, so the crew can check engine
SLi quantity before engine start. When
the STATUS Switch is pressed, the lower
display changes to the status mode for
other preflight checks. After the crew
ig satisfied with the airplane's
status, pressing the ENGINE switch will
return the secondary engine parameters
fo the lower display unit (DU).
Following a satisfactory engine start,
the crew may desire to Feturn to the
status mode for control surface checks.
he lower display unit is returned to
the normal mode (blank DU), for
takeoff, by pressing the STATUS switch
again.

In Flight
If an abnormal condition existe or if a
component fails in flight, the crew
will be alerted by a *STATUS" cue in
the upper left corner of the lower
display. The crew may choose to check

arrange any required maintenance
actions,

EICAS-DISPLAY UNIT (DU)
Purpose
‘The two BICAS display unite provide a
multicolor visual display of the output
data from the selected EICAS computer
Physical Description
Each unit is attached to the mounting
rack by a hinged handle. Since the
handle is spring loaded when the unit
is fully seated, two SCREWS are used to
hold the handle’ flat against the
assembly. Forced air cooling is
provided from the equipment cooling
System through inlet/exhaust holes in
the rear of each unit. Wire mesh
Screens cover the cooling holes. A
Light sensor is located on the upper
right corner of the unit for autonatic

Power
The upper and lower DU's require 115
VAC, 400hz, single phase power which is
supplied from the left AC bus and right
AC bus, respectively.
Input/Output sisnals
The active EICAS computer provides
Synchronization, analog deflection, and
video signals to drive the CRT's.
Brightness control signals come from:

~ the EFIS renote light sensor,
~ the display select panel
These signals are multiplexed in each

If an over-tenperature condition exists

CONTROLS
Purpose
‘the dleplay select panel provides:
operator selectable control functions
fo the EICAS computer units for system
operation both in-flight, and on the

Physical Description
‘The display select panel functions
include display format selection,
computer source selection, display
brightness control, and
thrust reference-setting control
Controls for clearing displayed engine

Subsystem parameters, are also
provided.
‘The DSP weighs 4 pounds (1.8 Kg). one

167
Nov 24/97
Power
‘he DSP receives 115 volts ac, 400 Hz
single phase power, from the right ac
bus via'a circuit breaker on Pli panel
Input/Output signals
‘The DSP receives input discretes from
the maintenance panel and the CANCEL

Requested data for display is formatted
based upon these inputs and the DSP
control functions. Both BICAS
computers receive the request over two
Separate ARINC 429 buses.
A computer select analog discrete is
Supplied to the display switching
modules, determining waich EICAS

EIcAS digplay unite. when the select,
switch is in the AUTO position, the
Teft computer will normally drive the
EICAS displays, If the left computer
fails, the system automatically
switches to the right computer.
Brightness Control
‘The BRT controls consist of two
concentric rotary knobs. “When rotated
Clockwise, the inner knob increases the
brightness of the upper display unit
and the outer knob similarly controle
the lover display unit. Since both
knobs are mechanically clutched
together, they normally rotate
together, but, it is possible to change
the relative displacement of the two
Knobs to balance the brightness of the
two displays
