An introduction to gustar

Gustar is an interesting verb and used a lot in Spanish! Gustar uses indirect object pronouns (In English:
me, you, him, her, us, them) not subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros (as), ellos, ellas, ustedes).
Although we translate gustar as to like, it really means to be pleasing in Spanish. We will also use gustar
with different infinitives (verbs).
Study the following chart with gustar and the indirect object pronouns. I have bolded the indirect object
pronouns. Fill in the translations as I say them. The first one has been done for you. **note that you need
to be clear who you are talking about-see the next chart.

Singular Plural

Me gusta… Nos gusta…

I like… We like…
(It is pleasing to me) (It is pleasing to us)
Te gusta… Os gusta…
You -(familiar)like… Y’all (informal, plural) like…
(It is pleasing to you_ (It is pleasing to y’all)
Le gusta… Les gusta….
He,she or You (formal) They or all of you like…
likes… (It is pleasing to
(It is pleasing to him,her or them or all of you)
you formal)
Adding emphasis with gustar

You will notice that there are short phrases in front of me gusta, etc. Many times, Spanish
speakers will use these phrases for emphasis or to help identify the person being talked
about. You will see gustar used both ways. **this will help you to clear up who you are
talking about.

A mí me gusta A nosotros
A nosotras nos gusta
A ti te gusta A vosotras
A vosotros os gusta
A él A ellos
A ella A ellas
A usted A ustedes
A Lupe A Lupe y Juan
A Juan

Now, how do we put it all together to form sentences? Follow along and write in the
translations as I say them in the box provided.

indirect object pronoun gusta infinitive (or verb)

Me gusta leer revistas.

Te gusta esquiar.

Le gusta ir a la escuela.

Nos gusta pasar tiempo con amigos.

Les gusta practicar deportes.

Os gusta ver la television.

Now when you talk about something you like you may also want to talk about what you
don’t like. We will use the affirmative and the negative.

A Juan le gusta tocar la guitarra.

Notice where you add the word no

use the negative to say we don’t like to go to school either.
