For this week, this module provides the learners with the techniques and
strategies of laying out and pinning patterns. This will make them realize the
importance of these two steps before sewing a lady’s skirt.

Lesson 5: Lay-out and Pin Pattern

To start with this module, you are advised to follow these simple instructions to assure
learning.
1. Look for a good place to study to. It should have clear surroundings, proper
ventilation, free from different noise, and make sure the lights are on.
2. Prepare all the learning tools and materials.
3. Answer the pre-test based on your retained learning.
4. Read and analyze the content of the module.
5. Takedown notes so that you will remember all the important details.

Last week you have learned that fabric preparation is very important, especially if the
fabric is dyed, printed, or finished. Though such preparation adds extra effort on your
part as a dressmaker, you need to do it to make a perfectly fitted finished product. You
have also learned the different steps of preparing the material and their major
preparation techniques.

Pattern layout is the arrangement of drafted pattern unto the fabric meant for
marking before cutting the final pattern. These two steps are also considered crucial as
accuracy is must observed.

The pattern is a hard paper that is composed of the different specifications of the
individual body parts. It is usually equal to different parts of the garment made flat on a
paper.

Types of Pattern:

1. Basic block or block pattern. It is an individual component of the garment without


reflecting any design. It is produced according to the exact body measurement
for different age groups and gender. It is classified into :

2. Working Pattern or Garment Pattern. It is made up of basic and block patterns. It


is needed for every part of the garment.

Laying-out and Pinning Pattern

Laying out pattern pieces on the fabric to prepare for cutting is an important step
that must be done carefully and accurately to save time, money, and effort. To get the
best result, here are some guidelines to follow in laying out and pinning patterns.

Procedures in laying-out and pinning pattern.

1. Make sure that you have all the pattern pieces – front part and back part of the
pajama pattern.
2. Distinguished the right side or a “pretty” side of the fabric.
3. Face the fabric right side under to free it from marks.
4. Spread the fabric flat on the table and pin the pattern pieces and fabric together.
5. Notice and consider the fabric grain.
