Engineering Mechanics Solutions

The document provides solutions to multiple statics problems involving rigid bodies. It calculates forces, tensions, angles and moments for different systems of bodies under the influence of applied forces. Key steps and equations are shown. Resultant forces and moments are computed at various points to solve for unknown values. Diagrams are referenced to illustrate the geometry of each multi-force system.

STATICS OF RIGID BODIES

ASSIGNMENT #1 SOLUTION

1. The force system shown in Figure 1 has a resultant of 200 lb pointing up along the Y-axis. Compute the
values of F and Ɵ required to give this
resultant.
Solution:
∑Fx=Rx
FCosƟ + 240Cos30°- 500 = 0
FCosϴ=-240Cos30°+ 500
FCosϴ= 292.145 lb ---------eq. 1

∑Fy=Ry
FSinƟ – 240Sin30° = 200
FSinƟ = 240Sin30° + 200
Fsinϴ = 320.000 lb ---------eq. 2

𝐹𝑠𝑖𝑛𝛳 320.000 𝑙𝑏 320.000 𝑙𝑏

tanϴ =𝐹𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛳 = 292.145 𝑙𝑏
; ϴ= Arc tan⁻¹ (292.145 𝑙𝑏) = 47.605°

292.145
FCosϴ = 292.145 lb ; F= = 433.297 lb
𝐶𝑜𝑠 47.605°

2. The block shown in Figure 2 is acted on by its weight W= 400 lb, a horizontal force F= 600 lb, and the
pressure P exerted by the inclined plane. The resultant R of these forces is parallel to the incline.
Determine P and R. Does the block move up
or down the incline?

Solution:
By using the incline as the horizontal reference

∑Fx=Rx
600cos30° - 400sin30° - Pcos75° = Rx --eq.1

∑Fy=Ry
-600sin30° - 400cos30° + Psin75° = 0 ---eq.2

From eq.2
600𝑠𝑖𝑛30° + 400𝑐𝑜𝑠30°
𝑃=
𝑠𝑖𝑛75°
P= 669.213 lb

Thus from eq.1

Rx= 600cos30° - 400sin30° - 669.213cos75°
Rx= 519.615 – 200 – 173.205
Rx= 146.410 lb

R= √𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦²
R= √(146.410)2 + 0
R=146.410 lb
3. Two locomotives on opposite banks of a canal pull a vessel moving parallel to the banks by means of
two horizontal ropes. The tensions in these ropes are 3000 lb and 4400 lb while the angle between
them is 60°. Find the resultant pull on the vessel and the angle between each of the ropes and the sides
of the canal.

Solution:
∑Fx=Rx
3000cosß° + 4400cosΩ°= Rx --eq.1

∑Fy=Ry
3000sinß° - 4400sinΩ° = 0 ---eq.2

From eq.2
Sinß = 1.467sinΩ

But ß= 60°- Ω
Thus,
sin(60°- Ω) = 1.467sinΩ
sin60°cos Ω – cos60°sinΩ = 1.467sinΩ
0.866cosΩ – 0.5sinΩ = 1.467sinΩ
0.866coΩ = 1.967sinΩ

Therefore;
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝛺 0.866
TanΩ = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛺 = 1.967

Ω = 23.762°
ß = 60° - 23.762° = 36.238°

From eq.1
Rx= 3000cosß° + 4400sinΩ°
Rx= 3000cos36.238° + 4400cos23.762°
Rx= 2419.705 + 4026.999
Rx = 6446.704 lb

R= √𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦²
R= √(6446.704)2 + 0
R= 6446.704 lb

4. In the figure 9, assume clockwise moments as positive, compute the moment of force F= 100 lb and
of force P =200 lb about points A,B,C,D and E.
