TOP 1°° OF ALL TIMES
As a special Christmas bonus we print a Top 100 Of All Times and although this phenomenon is used by various European Radio Stations, we believe Radio
Veronica Holland came with the idea first. Already back in 1968 Radio Veronica, then still a pirate station in the North Sea, introduced this highly interesting
by the Stichting Top 40,
- list, always broadcasts as a major show at the end of the year. This year they present the 14th edition, which again is prepared
compiling from thousands of returned postcards. -
Of that first Top 100 only 4 records are still charted in this year's Top 100: A Wider Shade Of Pale, House Of The Rising Sun, Satisfaction and Hey Jude.
Although some tracks showing in the Top 100 are Dutch from origin (such as Golden Earring's Radar Love and Twilight Zone, Oerend Hard from Dutch
farmers band Normaal, Vandenburg's Burning Heart and Shocking Blue's Venus), the rest is internationallyknown material. All Is suitable for your
programming. After being no. 1 for nine years, Deep Purple's Child In Time is now set back to no. 2 by Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. We note that some
rock acts like Led Zeppelin and The Stones, Rod Stewart and Nazareth are represented by their most soft and romantic tunes. Famous names like The
Beatles, The Stones, Queen, Deep Purple, Eagles, etc. are all represented by two of their most well known tracks but winner this year is David Bowie, who
has 4 tracks (including one duet with Queen) in this list. We would appreciate hearing from those dj's using a Top 100 Of All Times.

The evolution of radio and television programming in Europe during the 1980s was influenced by expanding use of TV as background entertainment and the emergence of pirate radio stations like Radio Caroline and Laser 558, which challenged government-controlled stations and introduced diverse programming . In England, the BBC maintained its influence, but pirate stations demonstrated the potential for alternative programming, showing that audiences desired more varied music content . Germany's radio followed a more traditional path but saw shifts toward catering to pop, rock, and technopop audiences . France witnessed a proliferation of FM stations with increased pop and rock music airplay despite governmental control attempts . These developments led to broader exposure for international music and an increase in music videos on TV, thereby impacting record sales and promotional strategies within the music industry .

The collaborative nature of European media networks facilitated the dissemination of music entertainment in the 1980s by fostering partnerships across radio, television, and print media, which amplified the reach of music content . Networks like the ILA in Great Britain and satellite programs like Music Box and Sky-fi promoted music videos and expanded accessibility beyond national confines . Similarly, collaborations between independent marketing bureaus and media outlets in France enabled the creation of comprehensive hit-parades that informed programming decisions . These synergies enabled a cross-pollination of musical tastes and broadened exposure for artists, highlighting the importance of collaborative networks in overcoming traditional media barriers and expanding music's cultural footprint across Europe .

Pirate radio stations, like Radio Caroline and Laser 558, significantly influenced the radio landscape in England by offering diverse programming and challenging the traditional broadcasters like the BBC . They provided audiences with alternative music selections and formats that were not available on government-controlled stations, thereby attracting substantial listenership and influencing mainstream programming decisions to some extent . Despite official claims to the contrary, it is suggested that these stations did impact the programming choices of the BBC and others, demonstrating the public's demand for more varied content . However, the British government took steps to curb their influence by enforcing laws like the Marine Offences Act .

Music television shows such as ARD's Formel Eins played a crucial role in the promotion and consumption of music during the 1980s by showcasing music videos, thereby increasing their importance in marketing strategies . The show featured primarily music videos, thus serving as a direct promotional platform for new releases and enhancing the visual aspect of music marketing, which increasingly became an essential tool for reaching younger audiences . This approach not only impacted how music was consumed but also how it was produced, with artists and record labels investing more in the creation of engaging music videos to secure airplay. The influence of such shows extended beyond promoting individual tracks to shaping the broader music culture, making them vital in the commercial success of artists and bands during the decade .

The French government attempted to regulate the burgeoning FM radio scene by monitoring stations closely, particularly focusing on the technical limits such as the size of transmitting aerials . Despite these efforts, many stations, such as NRJ and Poste Parisien, continued to wield significant influence over young audiences with their contemporary music programming . The government's regulatory measures were only partially effective, as the popularity of these stations evidenced a strong public desire for more diverse and international music content . This reflected an ongoing struggle between regulatory frameworks and audience demand, illustrating the complexities involved in media governance during this period.

German radio stations in the 1980s adapted their programming by differentiating their channels to cater to a varied audience comprising fans of MOR (Middle of the Road), pop, rock, and technopop music . Major stations in cities like Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt developed special "popular music" channels to address the needs of listeners who preferred pop and rock, while others continued to serve audiences that favored traditional German schlager music . The emergence of stations like SWF in Baden Baden exemplified this adaptability by attracting younger audiences with their trendsetting music formats, demonstrating the significant shifts in broadcasting strategies to meet diverse listener preferences in a competitive market .

RTL's strategic shift in format, which involved incorporating more MOR and German language music, was a response to changing audience demands and competitive pressures within the German music market . This adjustment aligned RTL with audience segments that favored traditional music styles, reflecting its strategy to retain these listeners amid broader market changes . The shift resulted in strengthening its position among older audiences and differentiated it from other stations catering to the younger, emerging pop and rock audience. The strategic rebalancing provided RTL with continued relevance while ensuring diversity in its musical offerings, which played a crucial role in maintaining its competitive edge in the German broadcasting landscape .

The BBC's approach to music programming in the 1980s set it apart from other European broadcasters through its extensive influence and cautious evolution in programming . BBC One and Two held a vital place in introducing new artists and maintaining the global success of British talent, yet they were also known for less daring approaches compared to evolving competitors . This contrasted with the diverse and often experimental formats seen in other European regions, where stations responded to both domestic and international influences . Despite this conservative reputation, the BBC's extensive reach and institutional reputation provided a platform that other broadcasters in Europe could not easily replicate, thus maintaining its leadership position .

Independent marketing research significantly influenced French FM radio station programming by providing data-driven insights into listener preferences, thus shaping airplay decisions . The introduction of a serious hit-parade organized by an independent research bureau served as a critical tool for understanding what music resonated with listeners, particularly as it included the views of major media outlets like Radio (Europe 1), TV (Canal Plus), and press (Tele7jours). This research-driven approach not only enhanced the stations' ability to cater to audience demands but also promoted international music by revealing its increasing domestic popularity, ultimately affecting programming strategies and airplay choices across French FM stations .

European radio stations typically offered diverse music programming on a single channel, unlike American stations, which tended to specialize in particular music genres such as Top 40, AOR (Adult-Oriented Rock), Urban, or AC (Adult Contemporary). This approach in Europe allowed listeners to experience various music styles, whereas American stations had more segmented formats focusing on one type of music at a time . The diversity in European programming was influenced by the competitive landscape among different types of radio stations, including official, pirate, and international ones .
