Space & Autonomy

The 65th American Studies Association of Texas (ASAT) Conference will be held November 2-
4, 2022, at Collin College-Frisco, Texas. Our conference theme is “Space & Autonomy.” While
scholars and researchers in various disciplines have examined the relationship between space and
autonomy for centuries, perhaps millennia, our need to negotiate between these two concepts has
never been more pressing: we have had to reconsider our personal and public spaces in the face
of a pandemic; we have had to reconceive of the geography of our urban spaces and
infrastructure to confront climate change; we have had to maneuver around the constantly
shifting political climate in a fractious nation; and we have had to negotiate the ever expanding
realm of cyberspace. Space is all around us. It is part of our everyday lives. Our freedom to
explore and negotiate space is both private and public, intimate and impartial, often governed by
our relationship to specific spaces or places. “Place is security,” argues Yi-Fu Tuan, “space is
freedom: we are attached to the one and long for the other” (3).
We ask prospective presenters to write abstracts that examine the complex relationship between
space and autonomy, but we will also consider presentations that deal with issues relating to
American culture in any form or fashion, especially ones that focus on Texas. The following is a
list of suggested areas of scholarship you may consider when exploring our conference theme:

• African American/Black Studies • Health & Wellness

• Agricultural & Rural Studies • Hispanic Studies
• Art (visual/performing) and Music • Historical and/or Political Perspectives
• Asian American Studies • Journalism
• Communication Studies • Language & Literature
• Creative Writing • Native American Studies
• Environmental Studies • Philosophy
• Fashion Design • Popular Culture
• Film/Theatre Studies • Sociology
• Folk Lore Studies • Technology
• Gender Studies • War

ASAT encourages the submission of academic and creative proposals for panels, papers, and
visual presentations that reflect a contemplative inquiry of the conference theme from an
interdisciplinary perspective. Presenters should be professionals in their field, though graduate
and undergraduate students are also encouraged to submit proposals endorsed by a faculty
mentor.
Blind abstracts should be limited to 250 words and include a separate cover sheet with a working
title, your full name, school affiliation (if applicable), and contact info. Your name and/or
affiliation should not appear on your abstract. Submissions open April 1, 2022! Click “submit
abstract” above to make your submission.
To help mitigate financial difficulties in attending the conference, we are offering travel grants
for students (up to $100) and junior faculty—instructors, adjuncts, lecturers, and assistant
professors (up to $200). Please email grant application materials, which include your travel
budget, abstract, and acceptance email to: asattravelgrant@[Link]
