Lab 1: Virtual machine backup capabilities
Lab 1: Virtual machine backup capabilities
Expected time to complete all labs, including launch time, is 60 minutes maximum.
This module contains the following lab exercises:
Lab 1.1: Connect to the Hyper-V and vSphere hypervisors
Lab 1.2: Create a manual selection vSphere backup job
Lab 1.3: Create a policy-driven vSphere backup job
Lab 1.4: Create an encrypted Hyper-V backup job
Veeam Availability Suite v10: Configuration and Management - Lab Guide 5
Lab 1: Virtual machine backup capabilities
Lab 1.1: Connect to the Hyper-V and vSphere hypervisors
In this exercise you will add a VMware vCenter Server and a Microsoft Hyper-V host to the Veeam Backup Server.
Task 1: Add the VMware vCenter Server
1. Launch the Veeam Backup & Replication Console from the desktop.
2. Modify localhost to the remote server veeam-vbr.vmce.lab.
Note: This server, MANAGEMENT, is simply the management server that will be used to connect to the actual backup server.
3. Click the Connect button.
Important: Connecting to the console can take a few minutes, please have some patience.
4. Maximize the veeam-vbr.vmce.lab - Veeam Backup & Replication console window.
5. Navigate to the Backup Infrastructure view.
6. On the Server ribbon, click the Add Server button .
7. Select VMware vSphere.
8. Select vSphere.
9. Enter:
a. DNS name: vcenter01.vmce.lab
b. Description: VMware vCenter Server
10. On the Name step, click the Next > button.
11. Click the Add... button.
12. Enter:
a. Username:
[email protected] b. Password: Pa%%w0rd

8. Next to the Credentials drop down menu, click the Add... button.
9. Enter:
a. Username:
[email protected] b. Password: Pa%%w0rd
c. Description: Domain admin account in UPN format
10. In the Credentials window, click the OK button.
Note: Generally, you would need to select credentials for the account that has local administrator permissions on the added
Hyper-V Server. In our case, the Hyper-V server is domain joined, so we are using a domain credential.
11. On the Credentials step, click the Next > button.
12. On the Apply step, keep the default settings and click the Apply button.
Note: This process will take a few minutes, please have some patience.
13. On the Results step, click the Next > button.
14. On the Summary step, click the Finish button.

21. On the Virtual Machines step, keep the default selection and click the Next > button.
22. Tick the Quick rollback (restore changed block only) check box.
Note: Quick rollback means that the VMware changed block tracking technology will be leveraged to enable incremental
restore.
In the previous scenario, we assumed that the hard drives of the VM were lost because of a hardware or a storage issue. In this
one, we will assume that the virtual machine to be restored has a software problem itself – so the incremental restore option
(quick rollback) will be used.
Instead of restoring an entire VM or VM disk from a backup file, Veeam Backup & Replication recovers only those data blocks
that are necessary to revert the VM or VM disk to an earlier point in time. Incremental restore significantly reduces the recovery
time and has little impact on the production environment.
23. On the Restore Mode step, click the Next > button.
24. On the Reason step, leave the Restore reason blank and click the Next > button.
25. Click the Show VM(s) text link to verify it is only vSphere-Tiny that will be powered off during the restore.

Note: To use incremental restore/quick rollback, make sure that the following requirements are met:
- The VM or VM disk is restored to its original location.
- Changed Block Tracking is enabled for the VM disk or all disks of a VM you plan to restore.
- The backup file from which you plan to restore a VM or a VM disk is created with the Use Changed Block Tracking option
enabled.

In this lab exercise, you will perform a secure restore.
Task 1: Perform a secure restore
1. Back in the Veeam Backup and Replication console, expand the Backup: RPO 24 hours with 14 days retention
backup job.

Note: During secure restore, Veeam Backup & Replication mounts disks of the machine that you plan to restore to the mount
server. On the mount server, Veeam Backup & Replication triggers an antivirus to scan files from the mounted disks. If during
the scan the antivirus detects malware, Veeam Backup & Replication will either abort the restore process, or restore the
machine or its disks with restrictions depending on secure restore settings.
Important: Secure restore can also be enabled for a SureBackup job in the additional job settings step!
7. Select the Abort VM recovery radio button.
8. Click the Next > button on the Secure Restore step.

Note: For file-level recovery on non-Windows file systems, Veeam Backup & Replication uses a special File Level Recovery
helper (FLR helper) - a small virtual appliance based on the stripped-down Linux kernel. Whenever you perform file-level
restore, Veeam Backup & Replication automatically starts the appliance and mounts the VMDK files to the FLR appliance as
virtual hard drives. VMDK files are mounted directly from backup files, without prior extraction of the backup content, which
makes the restore process much faster compared to competitive solutions. You can then copy individual files and folders from
VM disks to your local machine drive or a network share.

Note: Make sure to observe what is happening in the Hyper-V Manager as well. The failback protective snapshot that saves the
pre-failback state of a VM replica is not deleted - Veeam Backup & Replication uses this snapshot as an additional restore point
for the VM replica. With the pre-failback snapshot, Veeam Backup & Replication needs to transfer fewer changes and, therefore,
puts less load on the network when replication activities are resumed

replica.
2. The VM is powered off.
3. The failover process triggers the replication job to perform another incremental backup run and copy a portion of the
lastminute changes to the replica. The replica becomes fully synchronized with the source VM.
