INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS TOD?
Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a micro or macro
level development model wherein mixed-communities are
built around transit nodes to ensure sustainable living.
The development focuses on creating components
indispensable for human existence. For instance,
developing residential, commercial, office, malls and
entertainment spaces nearby Metro stations, Sub-urban
stations, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) etc for ensuring
easy accessibility and quality lifestyle to urban dwellers.
Overall, TOD creates a walkable environment, allowing
residents and the working populace hassle-free travel to
markets, offices, and neighbouring places. It also motivates
people to use public transport, thereby, controlling
vehicular congestion and pollution levels.
AIM:
To design a transit hub (RAILWAY TERMINAL) by integrating a variety and high-density mix of land use and
recreation options within walking/cycling distance of each other and of MRTS stations - in order to induce
a lifestyle change towards healthier living and better quality of life.

OBJECTIVES:
• To create a walkable design as pedestrian as the highest priority.
• Strengthening the primary modes of urban transportation by integrating the railway terminal
• This terminal will be an important landmark by allowing the people to access the public
transportation in order to reduce the traffic congestion that is happening in Chennai central .
• Creating a new neighbourhood with offices, parks, retail & other amenities.
• Facilitate access & movement for different user groups.
SCOPE:
• Well planned transportation infrastructure- providing all passengers access for safe deboarding &
deboarding locations, pedestrian friendly walkways & easily accessible parking lots.
• Mixed use development
• Sustainability aspects – solar power generation usage, proper waste
management system, recycling & reuse of waste
water, rain water harvesting collection etc.

PROJECT REQUIREMNETS:
• New Railway terminal designed with 9 new lines & 5 platforms and
with all the requirements needed to design a terminal.
• Mall or shopping centre- Shops, food courts, bank, gym, day care,
public amenities
• Office
• Hotel
• Service apartments
• Bikeshare rental system
• Parking infrastructure
• Recreational, informal vendor shops
• Multifunctional public plaza

LIMITATIONS:
• Hotel & mall– would be zoned and not be dealt in detailed
• The construction and structural detail of the building would not be dealt
in minute detail.

SPECIAL STUDY:
• Solar energy utilization
• Solid waste management
• Rain water harvesting

SITE JUSTIFICATION:
NEED FOR RAILWAY TERMINAL
• The Chennai central railway terminal faces overcrowding,
traffic congestion opposite to Chennai central on Poonamalee high road &
delaying of train due to limited infrastructure & no further expansion
could be done because two coaching terminals Chennai central & Egmore
which is landlocked & bereft of any scope of expansion.

• So the southern railway board decided to develop the abandoned salt


cotaurs yard into new terminal

• The Salt Cotaurs terminal will be city’s 4th terminal after Central, Egmore &
Tambaram.

• Southern railway has proposed to renovate the area, lay 9 new lines with 5
platforms & a passenger circulating area with entry & exit on Elephant gate
road, which leads to the adjoining bridge. The yard spreads over 45acres &
2km from central

• Once the new terminal is built, Chennai division of the southern railway can
shift around 10 trains bound for stations of Chennai – such Bengaluru,
Salem, Mumbai & Tirupati from basin bridge. SITE LOCATION: BASIN BRIDGE, CHENNAI
(2km from Chennai Central)
SALT COTAURS HISTORY :
AREA: 45 acres
• Salt cotaurs is an old Godown.
• Salt has been a major imports & exports in British period
• All the salt was stored in the railway goods shed which came to be known
as Salt Cotaurs in 1859
• The Salt Cotaurs still a few years ago used to unload cement, fertilisers &
food grains but now it is been shifted to Royapuram.
