POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS

ASSIGNMENT NO. 1 (REVISION OF CIRCUIT ANALYSIS)

DUE DATE: 8 APRIL, 2021
Note: Each question holds 10 marks
Question No. 1: Figure below gives the general D–Y transformation. (a) Show that the general
transformation given in figure below hold true for a three-phase load. (b) What will the transformations
be if we consider admittances instead of impedances? Can we develop a generic formula? (c) Determine
the impedances of the equivalent Y for the following D impedances: ZAB = j10 Ω, ZBC = j20 Ω, and
ZCA =j25 Ω.

Question No. 2: Figure below shows three loads connected in parallel across a 1000-V (RMS), 60-Hz
single-phase source.
Load 1: Inductive load, 125 kVA, 0.28PF lagging
Load 2: Capacitive load, 10 kW, 40 kVAR
Load 3: Resistive load, 15 kW
(a) Determine the total kW, kVAr, kVA, and supply power factor.
(b) In order to improve the power factor to 0.8 lagging, a capacitor of negligible resistance is connected in
parallel with the above loads. Find the KVAR rating of that capacitor and the capacitance in µF. Comment
on the magnitude of the supply current after adding the capacitor.

Question No. 3: A simple system is shown in Figure below. Perform the following tasks:
a) Assume that the voltage at bus 2 as well as the load powers P2 and Q2 are known, derive an
expression to evaluate the voltage at bus 1. Draw a phasor diagram to show your result. State any
other assumptions you make.
b) Assume also that the power transferred over the branch is relatively small, derive an expression to
approximately calculate the voltage at bus 1. What is the error in the result compared to that of part
a). State any other assumptions you make.

Question No. 4: Modeling the transmission lines as inductors, with 𝑆𝑖𝑗 = 𝑆𝑗𝑖∗ , Compute 𝑆13, 𝑆31, 𝑆23, 𝑆32,
𝑆𝐺3 in Figure below. (Hint: complex power balance holds good at each bus, statisfying KCL.)

Question No. 5: For the circuit shown in figure below, find i5 using nodal analysis.

Question No. 7: Solve the given circuit in the figure below by Mesh Analysis.

Question No. 8: The circuit of shown in figure below is represented in the phasor (frequency) domain. If
I10 = 4 e j35A, V = 10 e j35,and I = 2 e j35A, (a) across what type of element does V appear, and what is its
value? (b) Determine the value of V

Question No. 9: The kiln operation of a local lumberyard has a monthly average power demand of 175
kW, but associated with that is an average monthly reactive power draw of 205 kVAR. If the lumberyard’s
utility company charges $0.15 per kVAR for each kVAR above the benchmark value (0.7 times the peak
average power demand), (a) estimate the annual cost to the lumberyard from PF penalties; (b) calculate the
money saved in the first and second years, respectively, if 100 kVAR compensation capacitors are available
for purchase at $75 each (installed).
Question No. 10: Calculate the complex power delivered to each passive component of the circuit shown
in Figure below, and determine the power factor of the source.

If the source is operating at a lagging PF of 0.9, calculate (a) the peak voltage magnitude; (b) the
instantaneous power absorbed by the load at t = 1 ms; (c) the apparent power supplied by the source; (d)
the reactive power supplied to the load; (e) the load impedance; and ( f ) the complex power supplied by
the source (in polar form).
Question No. 12: If each of the three phases in a balanced delta connected load is composed of a 10 mF
capacitor in parallel with a series-connected 470 ohm resistor and 4 mH inductor combination, assume a
