VTS LESSON PLAN
Grade: 1st grade Subject: Art Date:oct. 26, 2021
Topic: VTS Lesson Lesson:
Using Paul Klee's "Castle and Sun" artwork
students will learn about line, color, and shape.
Lesson Focus and Goals:
1. Students should look closely at Klee's work and be able to describe what they see,
how it makes them feel, and describe the structure they think the artwork is showing.
2. Students should be able listen to the story "Cat and Bird" about Klee's work and
compare it to "Castle and Sun".
3. Students should be able to create an artwork of their own using similar lines and
shapes in the style of Klee's work.
Materials Needed:
Learning Objectives:
*Projection of image
*The Cat and the Bird by Geraldine [Link].2 - Use observation& investigation in preparation for making a work of art
[Link].1 - Compare artworks that represent the same subject using artistic foundations.?
.
Eischner & Peggy Nille
*Crayons and markers
*Scissors, glue
*18x24 paper (2 for each student.
Structure / Activity:
Day 1(40 minutes)
Gather students into a semi-circle and project the image "Castle and Sun" on the board and show only the left half of the
image. Give students 15 seconds to quietly look and then ask for student to describe what they see and how it makes them
feel.
Reveal the right half of the painting and give students another 15 seconds to quietly look. Then have students describe what
they see now and how it might be different than they thought the object was the first time.
Ask students how the image makes them feel and what shapes they see. Talk about why the artist might have used certain
shapes in various places and what those shapes convey to us...what kinds of structures we associate with them. Ask - what kind
of structure do you think this is?
Reveal the title of the work and ask students to judge whether or not it is successful.
Read "The Cat and the Bird" to students and stop along the way to ask them to describe shapes and structures in the story. Ask
them to compare the structure from the painting to the ones in the book.
Day 2 (40 minutes)
Model for students how to play with color and line on one piece of white paper and then cut that paper apart into at least 3
different kinds of shapes.
Students will then construct a structure using a collage of their shapes to emulate the style of Paul Klee.
Assessment:
Students will be able to describe what they see in Paul Klee's Castle and Sun and
compare it to images in the book The Cat and the Bird. They will also be able to complete
a collage that looks like a structure using at least 3 different shapes and 3 different
colors in the same style as Klee.
