Amaryllifolius) Extract As Cockroach Repellent Floorwax

The document discusses a research project that aims to determine if a floor wax made from vinegar (acetic acid) and pandan leaf extract can effectively repel cockroaches. It provides background on cockroaches as pests and how they can spread disease. Vinegar and pandan leaves are proposed as natural repellents due to acetic acid and compounds in pandan leaves that cockroaches find unpleasant. The study will create floor wax with different amounts of vinegar, pandan extract, cooking oil, and candle wax to test repellency over time and identify the most effective formulation.

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Cockroach has created substantial pest problems in many developing countries

specifically in urban areas. Cockroaches are among the most common pests infesting homes,
apartments and buildings because they prefer warm environments close to food and water. Most
people find cockroaches a nuisance pest because most emit a repulsive odor, feed on anything
edible to humans, hide in cracks and crevices of structures, and degrade the aesthetics of the
household environment. They can be found almost anywhere that supports life (Gholam Hossein
Shahraki, 2013).

According to Potter 2020, Cockroaches eat feces, dead animals, sour beer, and even their
young ones. They produced allergens may cause congestion, sneezing and watery eyes, as well
as asthma characterized by recurrent cough, and difficulty breathing, especially in children. They
can also spread nearly 33 different kinds of bacteria. They pick up different bacterial species on
their legs while walking on rotten food in garbage containers, drains and sewers that they can
later contaminate food, kitchen utensils, and other household items. Because cockroaches move
freely from filth to food, they can transfer pathogenic microbes that cause food poisoning,
transmit diseases such as Salmonella, Cholera and Typhoid Fever and other illnesses.
(Cockroaches & Disease, 2020)

Over the years there has been intensive effort toward the development of natural products
in pest control. Much of this initiative is due to increased regulations on the use of chemicals in
insect pest management. Consumers have shown increased interest in and support for products
that are safer to human health and more environmentally friendly than many of the traditional
chemicals with high toxicity and long-lasting residues. Naturally derived bio-repellents have
been investigated as a group of chemicals that have biological activity and can cause repellent or

insecticidal effects without negative impacts on human safety and the environment (Gretchen
Schultz, 2006).

Most plants contain compounds that they use in preventing attack from insects or pests.
Pest repellent plants are herbs, flowers and vegetables naturally capable of driving away pests,
insects and animals through normal organic chemical means. Their leaves and other plant parts
contain organic compounds that confuses or pushes away harmful pests. One of those plants are
Pandanus Amaryllifolius which is commonly known as pandan. Taxi drivers in Malaysia and
Singapore hang these leaves in their vehicles to keep pest insects from colonizing the warm, dark
interior of the car. Pandan leaves contain a number of essential oils and chemicals that
cockroaches find unpleasant. Terpenes and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons make up between 6 and
42 percent of the oils in these leaves. This has low levels of essential oil, including 2-acetyl, 1
pyrroline, styrene, linalool, and B-caryophyllene. Pandan extract also has linalool which was
used as scent in 60-80 % of perfume hygiene products cleaning agents including soaps,
detergents, shampoo, lotions and it is also used by pest professional as fleya, fruit fly ad
cockroach insecticide (Palmer, 2009).

According to Terminix Blog 2019, Vinegar is often recommended as a natural way to get
rid roaches. Vinegar typically contains 5–8% acetic acid by volume, which has antibacterial
properties, especially when it comes to destroy bacteria and viruses. Unfortunately, it doesn’t
actually kill these problem insects. It is more of a cleaning tool and it won’t actually help
eliminate roach problem. It can help deter roaches and get rid of germs in the kitchen when used
as a cleaning agent. Maintaining a clean kitchen makes it less likely that roaches will be attracted
by a food source and establish an infestation. Base on the study of Shiffer 2020, the most
commonly used form would be white vinegar. This is because of white vinegar tends to be the
most acidic, between 4 to 7 % acetic acid, while cider and wine vinegars are usually closer to 5
to 6 % acetic acid. But that doesn’t make other vinegars totally useless. Others can work because
they have acetic acid as a base as well, but they may be less effective. One small study showed
that vinegar reductions or dressings can indeed have this effect and reduce the presence of
bacteria like Salmonella which is one of the germs carried by cockroaches into homes.

Statement of the Research Problem

There are over 3,500 species of cockroaches worldwide. Only several species are
commonly associated with humans. Cockroaches not only spoil food but also transfer pathogens
and cause allergic reactions and psychological distress to human. As a potential mechanical vector
of human diseases, many pathogenic organisms have been associated with cockroaches. These
include poliomyelitis viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and helminths (Shahraki, 2013). Problem
associated with cockroaches are constantly increasing, so the researcher chose this study to help
individuals find considerable solution to this problem.

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of vinegar and pandan leaves extract
as cockroach repellent floor wax. The study also aims to know if the floor wax made from vinegar
and pandan leaves extract could drive the cockroaches away for a considerable time. In addition to
this, it is hoped that this research will provide answers to the following research questions:

1. Does the floor wax made out of pandan leaves extract and vinegar, an effective cockroach
repellent?

2. Is the ability of pandan leaves extact in terms of repelling cockroaches different from the ability
of vinegar?

3. Is there a significant relationship between vinegar and pandan leaves extract in terms of
repelling cockroaches?

4. How long will be the effect of floor wax made out of pandan leaves extract and vinegar when
applied on the floor?

Conceptual Framework

Input Process Output

First, a large quantity of pandan

leaves should be collected.
Then it'll be thoroughly cleaned
with water. It will be extracted
with a mortar and pestle and a
piece of cloth after washing the
MATERIALS: pandan leaves. Next, you want
Vinegar to plan the set-up. This set-up
contains 3 different trials with
four different amount of four
Pandan leaves different ingredients which are
cooking oil, pandan leaves,
extract candle wax and vinegar (the
kind of vinegar will be use is
Cooking oil the cleaning vinegar). Proceed
Cockroach
to the making of floor wax after
it has been prepared. In creating
Candle wax it, there is only one process to
be completed. Next, you heat
repellent
the candle wax in a pan and
wait until it's melted. The floor wax
TOOLS: vinegar will be applied and
combined slowly after the
candle wax has melted. Then
Mortar the extract of pandan leaves
should be added. Stir until it's
Pestle blended thoroughly. Wait until
it hardens with the mixture.
Afterwards, mortar and pestle
are used to pound the hardened
mixture. Significant quantities
of oil must be applied during
pounding before the desired
consistency is reached; the floor
wax is eventually formed.

such as pandan leaves extract, vinegar, cooking oil and candle wax. And then after that, it will
proceed on making the floorwax by melting the candled wax and then slowly adding amount of
vinegar and pandan leaves extract. When the mixture is already done, it is the time to use the
mortar and pestle to pound the hardened wax and slowly adding amount of cooking oil until the
wax reaches its desired consistency. And then lastly the output, it is only consist of the product
that will be produced when the procedure is all done.

Hypothesis

Alternative Hypothesis

A. Floor wax made out of vinegar and pandan leaves extract have a positive effect in
repelling cockroaches.
B. The cockroach repellent effectivity of pandan leaves extract reaches 61.69% (Chun, 2016).
C. The repellent ability of pandan leaves extract is better than the repellent ability of vinegar
(Marfil et al. 2013).
D. Vinegar shows negative effect in terms of repelling cockroaches.

Null Hypothesis:

A. There is no significant relationship between vinegar and pandan leaves extract in terms
of repelling cockroach.

Significance of the Study

This study will be helpful for those individuals whose experiencing a problem regarding
with the cockroaches breeding in home. However, even the individuals who did not experienced
problems regarding to cockroaches will also benefit in this study since it can help them enlarge
their knowledge about the importance of keeping cleanliness inside and outside their home.

The result of the study will merit the following:

People: Not all individuals in the society have the ability to purchase insect
repellent. So individuals belonging to lower socioeconomic status are increasingly at risk
of contracting the disease which is caused by cockroaches. By this study, individuals
included to lower socioeconomic status who cannot purchase an insect repellent can create
their own product out of materials that are usually found inside their home.

Toddlers: This will benefit toddlers since most of them are usually crawling on the
floor. By substituting the available floor wax on the market into this alternative floor wax
made out of pandan leaves extract and vinegar, the harmful chemicals can be eliminated
causing a child friendly environment for young individuals. It can also reduce the risk of
toddlers to have diseases caused by the cockroaches.

Future Researcher: Data presented in this study can help future researcher on
conducting and presenting their own study, as it can serve as their reference for organizing
their own data.

Scope and Delimitations

This research focuses on the vinegar and pandan leaves extract in relation to floor wax’s
effectiveness. This research is limited to the use of vinegar and pandan leaves extract, and its
potential as a natural cockroach repellent and no other variable are involved. The researchers
chose this study for further investigation if the vinegar and pandan leaves extract can be an
effective source for floor wax. However, this study will only last within October 2020 to February
2021.
