COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to explore basic concepts and ideas shaping Political Science in areas of political theory, comparative
politics and international relations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
• Students will come to understand the means of inquiry in the social sciences generally, and in political
• science in particular. This will include an understanding of how knowledge about politics and
• government is generated by political scientists working within their discipline.
To enable students to articulate concepts and ideologies which have shaped Political Science.
Gain an understanding of how political ideologies and their impact on Modern day world politics.
Get acquainted with key terminology.
Students will come to understand that there are various types of political systems around the world, and
that these may differ from each other with regard to their individual political institutions, political
culture, political ideologies, and public policies.

Reading: Required readings should be completed by the session/date corresponding with the topic as indicated on
this syllabus. All readings will be available in the reading package and online. Any changes/additions that are made
to the syllabus will be announced in class. Please do active reading with notes in order to facilitate fruitful discussion.
Attendance (5%):
Regular class attendance is essential for this course. Given that there may be times that you are unable to attend class,
you may miss two classes over the course of the semester without incurring any penalty. After the second absence,
marks will be deducted off your attendance grade for each additional absence. The attendance will be marked once at
the beginning of the online class and once near the end of class. If you have electricity or internet issues, please inform
the TAs while email or message within 2 days maximum.
Class Participation (15%):
Everyone will be expected and encouraged to participate and cold calls might happen occasionally. You will either have
the option to speak up during the online classes or post discussion comments on the online forum discussion tab on
LMS.
If you participate during our online class once, it will earn you the full 1 mark for CP.
If you post a discussion point on LMS later, it will earn you 0.75 mark for CP.
Discussion comments must be at minimum 60 words. Your discussion point will be the answer to any one of the several
questions I post on LMS for that class session.
You must post your discussion comment within 48 hours of that respective class session for it to be counted as your CP.
Assignments (20%):
This instrument will consist of a combination of online quizzes, written assignments and a presentation. n-1 will be
applied.
