we proceed, Let us have a short activity. Here is a
word hunt. I will call students that will find and
highlight the word that you have searched.
Okay class; look for 10 global health issues and Yes ma’am
concerns that the World Health Organization and (students are starting to raise their hands)
members-nations are facing. Are you ready?
(After finding different words) (the students raise their hands)
I have a question for you class, what are the current (Ma’am in our community the current health
health issues and concerns in your community? Share issue and concerns are the addictive use of
and discuss these health initiatives. tobacco because most of the residents are
smoking cigarettes.)
Do you have any idea about the topic that we are
discussing today? (Yes ma’am, our topic for today is all about global
health initiatives and issues, concerns and
trends.)
B. ANALYSIS
Very good class. Our topic for today is about Global
health initiatives and issues, concerns and trends.
Global health is one of the most important issues in
the world.
In your own words, what can you say about Global (Ma’am, this includes the issues, concerns and
health initiatives?
trends about health that the world is facing
today.)
Very Good!
Now class, let’s discuss global health initiatives.
Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) are humanitarian
initiatives that raise and disburse additional funds for
infectious diseases, such
as AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; for immunization;
and for strengthening health systems in developing
countries.
Examples of GHIs are the President’s Emergency Plan
for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Global Fund to fight AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund), and the World
Bank’s Multi-country AIDS Programmed (MAP), all of
which focus on HIV/AIDS. The GAVI Alliance (formerly
The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization)
focuses on immunization, particularly with respect to
child survival.
These are some questions that will serve as guides
In our discussion and will be discussed later as we start
the topic.
What are the current health issues and concerns in the
community? What will be the world be like if health
issues and concerns are not properly addressed by
peoples around the world? What health issues and
concerns do you think should be addressed
immediately?
C. ABSTRACTION
Let us now discuss it briefly. Let us start discussing
global health initiative and the issues and concerns
regarding global health
One of the benefits of globalization to the world is the
development and improvement of various health
initiatives initiated by different nations and gov’t to
address health issues and concerns.
Global health initiatives are programs set in motion by
the United Nations through World Health Organization
(WHO) which targets specific health problems
including climate change, environmental sanitation,
mental health, tobacco regulation and alcohol use.
What do you think are the health issues that needed (the students raises their hands)
to be addressed that the world is facing today? (Some of this are AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria,
Tobacco and alcohol use, and Communicable
Diseases.)
Let us now discuss the ways on how to control or
prevent these issues and concerns regarding global
health.
1. The Global Fight against Communicable
Diseases
A. Roll Back Malaria
Roll Back Malaria is a global effort to reduce the
number of deaths from malaria infection through
heightened prevention tools, rapid response to
outbreaks, and development of new anti-malaria
products and effective treatment of the infection.
B. Stop TB
Stop Tb is a global effort to prevent further
transmission of tuberculosis or TB around the world.
One of the programs for Stop TB is the
implementation of the TB-DOTs short course strategy.
C. Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization
The Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization
is a global strategy which aims to strengthen children’s
immunization programs and introduce new generation
of licensed vaccines into use in developing countries
across the globe. These new vaccines are:
Hepatitis B vaccine
Childhood Meningitis vaccine
Yellow fever vaccine
Influenza vaccine
Vaccine for pneumonia
D. Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria
The Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria is a
funding project rather than an initiative. Nevertheless
it helps in the prevention, reduction and mitigation of
the negative impacts of the three diseases to humanity
which contributes to the fulfillment of the Millennium
Development Goals.
2. Global Prevention and Control of Tobacco
and Alcohol Use
• WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco
Control
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco control
(WHO FCTC) is the prime international treaty
negotiated under WHO. The WHO FCTC came into
existence in reaction to the global epidemic of tobacco
use and abuse. It affirms the right of every individual
across the world to the highest standard of health
promoting public health and providing new legal
means for global health cooperation.
The following summarizes the WHO FCTC provisions:
1. Price and tax measures to reduce the demand
for tobacco
2. Non-price measures to reduce the demand for
tobacco, namely:
• Protection from exposure to tobacco smoke
• Regulation of the contents of tobacco
products
• Regulation of tobacco product disclosures
• New packaging and labeling of tobacco
products
• Education, communication, training and public
awareness
• Demand reduction measures concerning
tobacco dependence and cessation
• Tobacco advertising, promotion and
sponsorship
3. Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of
Alcohol
The Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of
Alcohol recognizes the close ties between the harmful
use of alcohol and socio-economic development of a
nation. Likewise, this strategy builds and supports
other global health initiatives like the global strategy
for the prevention and control of non-communicable
diseases.
4. Global Strategy for the Prevention and
Control of Non-communicable Diseases
The Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of
Non-communicable Diseases is a global action plan to
prevent and control the following non-communicable
diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory
diseases, cancers and diabetes and the four shared risk
factors, unhealthy eating, physical inactivity, tobacco .
use and alcohol use.
Objectives of the plan:
1. To raise the priority accorded to non-
communicable disease at global and national
levels and to integrate prevention and control
of such diseases into policies across all gov’t.
2. To establish and strengthen national policies
and plans for the prevention and control of
non-communicable diseases.
3. To promote interventions to reduce the main
shared but preventable risk factors for non-
communicable diseases
4. To promote research for the prevention and
control of non-communicable diseases
5. To promote partnerships for the prevention
and control of non-communicable diseases
6. To monitor non-communicable diseases and
their casual factors and evaluate progress at
the local, national and global levels.
