DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. Pause and reflect (as directed in the video):
What do you think the lines suggest in Wladimir Flusser’s work, “At Terezin”?
From the title of the artwork, I think that the lines suggest bodies of four people
who were either dead or had an illness. Given that their bodies are portrayed as skeletal
bones, the two appear to be dead. It also gives me an impression that they could be a
family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children. The lines define the objects in
the artwork and provide an overview of what the artist aims to portray. As said in the
video, the lines or the artwork can be done freely and can be understood in different
ways. The context does not change my perception and understanding of the lines
presented in the work. However, I believe that the lines could have a deeper meaning
than what I perceived them to be.
How about the vertical lines and circles in Jozef Szajna’s, “Roll Call”?
Upon reflecting on Jozef Szajna’s artwork, I perceived that the vertical lines
visualized the shape of a human body. The vertical lines also hint that the individuals
are in prison. They were dark, lengthy, and significantly thick. The blank circles, on the
other hand, reflect the head of the individuals. The full colored circles suggest blood or
marks in the bodies of the persons in the artwork. It gave the artwork a deeper optical
illusion that allows viewers to describe what is happening and also enables the artist to
demonstrate their moods and emotions. Knowing that these were created during Nazi
concentration camps, I suppose my perceptions were comparable to what the artist was
attempting to convey.
2. The choice of medium contributes to the meaning of a work. Give ONE
example of an artwork (foreign or local) that demonstrates this. Please include
the following:
● Title of the work: Ghost Girl
● Name of the artist: Kevin Francis Gray
● Year it was created: 2007
● The medium used: Statuario Marble and Glass Crystal Beads
● Short description of the work:
Kevin Francis Gray, a sculptor from London, created the "Ghost Girl" sculpture
which is composed of Statuario Marble and Glass Crystal Beads. It is a statue of a
young woman, facedown and veiled by a stream of glass crystal beads. A skeletal
visage can be seen behind the beaded veil and there is a disturbing scar on the girl’s
arm that is purposely hidden in the back of the body. There are some interpretations
that suggest that the beads enclose symbolic tears or act as an interpretive shield. The
finest elements of a traditional marble statue were merged with the contemporary world
and emotional setting of Ghost Girl.
