Using the following polynomial functions 6
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 6𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 − 4𝑥 2 0
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2 − 11𝑥 + 4𝑥 2 2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 + 2

▪ What is the standard form of the polynomial? 2
▪ What is the degree of the polynomial?
▪ What is the leading coefficient?
▪ And lastly, what is the constant term?
C. Presenting examples
1. The standard form of the polynomial function
𝑓(𝑥) = 6𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 − 4𝑥 2 is 𝑓(𝑥) = 6𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 +
8𝑥 which is the terms are arrange in decreasing
power of x. The highest power of its term is 3.
Therefore, the degree of the polynomial is 3. The
leading coefficient is 6 and the constant term is 0.
2. The standard form of the polynomial function
𝑓(𝑥) = 2 − 11𝑥 + 4𝑥 2 is 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 +
2. The highest power of its term is 2. Therefore,
the degree of the polynomial is 2. The leading
coefficient is 4 and the constant term is 2.
3. The polynomial function 𝑦 = 𝑥(𝑥 2 − 5) can be
written in the standard form 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 − 5𝑥. The
highest power of its term is 3. Therefore, the
degree of the polynomial is 3. The leading
coefficient is 1 and the constant term is 0.
4. The polynomial function 𝑦 = 𝑥(𝑥 − 3)2 can be
written in the standard form 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 − 6𝑥 2 + 9𝑥.
The highest power of its term is 3. Therefore, the
degree of the polynomial is 3. The leading
coefficient is 1 and the constant term is 0.
5. The polynomial function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 −2 − 12 is not
polynomial because it has a negative exponent.
D. Discussing new concept and practicing new
skills
Answer Activity 2 Fix and Move Them, then Fill
me up, page 102
E. Discussing new concept and practicing new
skills
Analysis:
When are functions polynomials? How can
we determine the degree of a polynomial
function? And how we can determine which is the
leading coefficient and constant term in a
polynomial function?
F. Practical application
A demographic predicts that the population,
P, of a town t year from now can be modeled by
the function 𝑃(𝑡) = 6𝑡 4 − 5𝑡 3 + 200𝑡 +
12 000. What will the population on the town be
two (2) years from now?
G. Generalizations
A polynomial function is a function of a form 𝑃(𝑥) =
an x n + 𝑎𝑛−1 𝑥 𝑛−1 + 𝑎𝑛−2 𝑥 𝑛−2 + ⋯ + 𝑎1 𝑥 +
𝑎0, 𝑎𝑛 ≠ 0,
where 𝑛 is a nonnegative integer, 𝑛 as a positive integer
implies that:
a. 𝑛 is not negative
b. 𝑛 is not zero
c. 𝑛 is not fraction
d. 𝑛 is not a radical, and
e. 𝑛 is not imaginary
𝑎0 , 𝑎1 , … , 𝑎𝑛 are real numbers called coefficient, an x n is
the leading term, an is the leading coefficient, and a0 is
the constant term.
IV. Evaluation
Direction: Identify the polynomial functions from the given set of functions. Give your
reasons
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2 − 𝑥 + 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 4
2. 𝑃(𝑥) = √5𝑥 7 + 2𝑥 3 − 𝑥
3. 𝑦 = −𝑥 4 + 16
4. 𝑓(𝑥) = √5𝑥 + 3
5. y = x −3 + 𝑥 2 − 12𝑥
V. Assignment
Read the problem carefully and answer the given question.
You are designing candle-making kits. Each kit contains 25 cubic inches of candle wax
and a mold for making a pyramid-shaped candle with a square base. You want the height of
the candle to be 2 inches less than the edge of the base. What should be the dimensions of
your candle mold be? Show a mathematical procedure in determining the dimensions.
