Solar System
THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Introduction:
The night sky ,with its moon and shining stars , has always fascinated
us. If we observe the sky on a clear , dark night from an open and high
spot, we should see many natural objects visible in the [Link] could
be stars, planets or other celestial bodies.
Stars and Planets
Stars :
❖ Most heavenly bodies appears to
be [Link] seem to be
change their light from bright to
faint all the [Link] twinkling
heavenly bodies are called stars.
❖ Stars have their own light and
[Link] means that all stars are
self-illuminated.
❖ For example , the Sun that shines
bright all day is a star.
Stars and PLanets
Planets :
❖ Some heavenly bodies do not
[Link] do not have their
own light or [Link] heavenly
bodies are called planets.
❖ A planet is illuminated by some
other source like a star. For
example , the Earth is a planet
illuminated by the Sun.
Celestial Bodies
An introduction :
❖ The millions of stars we see in the sky are very far away from [Link]
comparison , the Moon and the Sun are near;that is why they appear
[Link], other stars and planets are also spherical.
❖ A scientific study of celestial bodies like stars, planets, etc is called
Astronomy.
The Sun :
❖ The sun is the head of the
Celestial Bodies solar [Link] is a bright star
made of extremely hot gases.
Solar system :
❖ It provides heat and light to all
❖ The solar system the members of the solar
system.
consists of the sun,
❖ The Sun plays a unique role in
eight planets supporting life on the Earth.
including the earth,
dwarf
planets,satellites,ast
eroids, comets and
meteors.
Celestial Bodies
Planets :
❖ Starting from the Sun, the eight planets are in this order: Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
❖ Beyond Neptune, there are a few small heavenly bodies that revolve
around the [Link] are called dwarf planets. For example , Pluto.
❖ Planets are generally spherical.
❖ Planets revolve around the Sun in their fixed paths called [Link]
movements of planets is called [Link] period of revolution
around the Sun is also fixed.
❖ While orbiting the Sun, planets also rotate on their [Link] movement
of planets is called rotation.
Celestial Bodies
Satellites :
❖ Some heavenly bodies in the solar system revolve around the
[Link] are called satellites of the planets around which
they revolve.
❖ Planets with their satellites revolves around the Sun .
❖ Most planets in the solar system have satellites . The Moon is
the satellite of the Earth.
Celestial Bodies
Asteroids :
❖ There is a band of innumerable tiny celestial bodies between the orbits of
Mars and [Link] tiny celestial bodies are called Asteroids.
❖ Asteroids are mainly contained within a belt called the Asteroid belt.
❖ Asteroids revolve around the Sun.
Celestial Bodies
Comets :
❖ Comets revolve around the Sun in
long elliptical orbits. That is why
they are seen in the sky only
occasionally after long periods.
Celestial Bodies
Meteors :
❖ Sometimes , we see a star falling from
the sky that appears as a bright
streak of light and disappears within
seconds. It is called a meteor.
❖ Meteors fall on other celestial bodies
as well.
❖ Many times ,meteors are bits of
matter or rocks coming from the
asteroid band.
❖ These bits enter the Earth’s
atmosphere at a very high speed, and
due to friction with the air ,they burn
up.
Celestial Bodies
Planets classification.
❖ With reference to asteroid belts, planets are classified as inner
and outer planets.
Inner planets :
❖ The inner planets lie between the Sun and the band of asteroids.
❖ They are Mercury , Venus, Earth and Mars.
❖ They are small and have a solid outer layer or crust.
Celestial Bodies
Planets classification:. Outer Planets..
❖ The outer planets lie beyond the band of asteroids.
❖ They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
❖ They are comparatively big than the inner [Link] are made
of rock and dust particles, and their outer layer or crust is made
of gases.
