CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND COMPANY BACKGROUND
1.1 Introduction
1.1.1 Advanced
Industrial Training is a compulsory component in the polytechnic syllabus.
Students are qualify to undergo industrial training for 22 weeks (1 semester) after
passing two semesters in the polytechnic for certificate courses and three semesters
for diploma courses. Students have to pass industrial training before proceed into
next semester and being awarded a Certificate or a Diploma from the polytechnic and
the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.
Generally, students have an option of either seeking out industrial placement
themselves or request for places via the Liaison and Industrial Training Unit.
Students have to undergo internship in suitable places in accordance to their
respective courses of major in the polytechnic. The Liaison and Industrial Training
Unit is also responsible to ensure continuous rapport between the industries and the
polytechnic.

During the internship, each student will be exposing to real working
environment and the atmosphere is totally different from the polytechnic. Often
students will be faced many challenges and problems that never encountered.
Therefore, students must take this opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience
through the industrial training.
1.1.2 Objectives of Industrial Training
Students who take any course in polytechnic must undergo industrial training
in the prescribed firms that have been selected by students and held an agreement of
understanding with the polytechnics.
In the firm, everything that they do must have goals, purposes and objectives
of its own, including industry training. Below are the objectives of industrial
training:
a) To expose students to real working environment.
Working environment full with various problems and challenges. Through
industrial training, students have the opportunity to gain experience,
knowledge, and help students apply for jobs in the future and can adapt to the
real working environment upon graduation.
b) To inculcate the spirit of teamwork and good communication among
colleagues.
Teamwork and good communication between colleagues is important in
human life. Students need to realize the importance and morale in an
organization.
In effect, students have the opportunity to establish good relationships with
others, and the boss at work in addition to fostering the spirit of cooperation.

c) To enable students to relate theories learned in the polytechnic
with the practical aspects of the firm.
Students who have completed the basic theory during the time in lectures will
make a comparison with the training received during the internship.
With this, students will gain many lessons and experiences and to enhance
their knowledge and develop themselves.
d) To practice safety rules in the industry.
All safety regulations set by the firm must be followed by every employee.
These regulations set by the firm to provide a place or an environment which
is safe, comfortable and clean to ensure the spiritual and physical welfare of
employees.
e) To enhance self-confident.
While working, there will be necessary be problems in which customers
sometimes do not provide sufficient information or materials, or where there
is doubt as to the account provided by the customer. But here the doubt or
lack of information should be handled and collected in a way.
With this, students are able to prepare themselves on how to communicate
effectively in the future with confidence. In addition, the students can
demonstrate the attitude of never give up.
f) To fostering trust and responsibilities.
This noble characteristic should be owned by any person. Students should
realize that such behaviour would be beneficial to them through the industrial
training.

With this, it can enhance the attitude of a student trying hard to complete the
task. In addition, students can eliminate negative thoughts in the interest of all
people and also to encourage mental maturity of students.
g) To generate an official report and assignments as directed by
polytechnic.
Upon completion of industrial training, each student must prepare a complete
industrial training report according to standards set by polytechnic based on
assignments that assigned by their immediate superior and being implemented
by themselves in the firm during the training period.
1.1.3 Objectives of Industrial Training Report
The purposes of the report were written not only to meet the needs of the
industrial training, but it is mostly a measure of a students' ability to adapt to the
realities of the real working environment.
With this report, all of the knowledge and experiences that they had gained
through the industrial training can be recorded and used as references in the later day.
Below are the objectives of industrial training report:
Allows students to document the activities during the training period and to
train students to find and collect information that are important, accurate and
useful.
Allow students to use their own style of writing and presentation to produce a
quality report according to industrial guidelines.
Industrial report that provided will get confirmation from supervisor of the
firm. Therefore, this industry report is strong evidence that the training was
conducted by students with good and proper.

Allows the Liaison and Industrial Training Unit and lecturers to evaluate
students' activities and achievements.
It can be used as reference materials to students either in education or
employment in the future.
To train students to provide comprehensive employment report as the basis
for the writing or preparation of any reports in the future.
The attitude of the individual responsible for the work that has been entrusted
to produce a quality report.
When preparing this report, the student can recall things that were learned
during the industrial training.
1.1.4 Importance of Industrial Training to Students
The main interest of industrial training is to enable students to apply the
lessons they have learned during the time in lectures into their industrial training and
acquiring new knowledge that has not been studied.
With this industrial training, students will also have access to the full
exposure of the real working environment and is a worthwhile experience for free.
In general, industry training is to help students strengthen and improve self-
confidence and as a basis to students in the preparation for stepping into the real
working environment.
In addition, industrial training is able to strengthen students’ discipline in
compliance with the regulations set by the firm during their industrial training. Due
to regulations that set by the firm, students will be exposed to the importance of time
management and work planning.
Furthermore, industrial training also provides opportunities for students to
develop leadership qualities. Students will be given opportunities to work as a team

through cooperation and division of labour, time management and work planning.
As a result, it can foster spirit of appearance that very important for carrying out
specific tasks.
In the real working environment, relationships play an important role to
determine the effectiveness of a job. Thus, one of the interests is to broaden students'
interaction and learn how to adapt to the society. Due to that, they are able to
communicate and interact with peoples from different backgrounds and foster
friendly relations with customers and other company staffs.
As a conclusion, industrial training is able to test the patience and
perseverance of the students while dealing with various problems and train the
mental maturity of students to face problems and work pressure.
1.2 Company Background
1.2.1 Introduction of the Company
MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd is a 50:50 joint venture company
between MMC Corporation Berhad and Gamuda Berhad that officially established
its business in year 2008.
MMC Corporation Berhad (MMC) is an investment holding company listed
on the Main Board of the Malaysia Stock Exchange Berhad (MSEB: MMCCORP)
with main interest in three core businesses: Transport & Logistics, Energy & Utilities
and Engineering & Construction. While Gamuda Berhad is a leader in turnkey and
B.O.T. civil engineering infrastructure and township development, with projects and
investments in South East and Far East Asia, Indochina, South Asia and the Middle
East.

This joint venture company responsible to design and build the Electrified
Double Track Project between Ipoh and Padang Besar and the project will involve
the construction of infrastructure works, track and system works on a 5-year Design
and Build Contract.
The Electrified Double Track Project between Ipoh and Padang Besar is a
329-km northern railway project that integrates with KTM’s main line from Ipoh to
Johor Baharu. When completed in 2013, the entire electrified dual tracks will stretch
968-km from south to north of Peninsular Malaysia.
Thus, there are around 2,000 employees in the whole Electrified Double
Track Project (EDTP), they are from all packages; N1/2/3 is Alor Star, N4/5 is Bukit
Mertajam, N6 is Kamunting, N7/8 is Sungai Siput and HQ is at Petaling Jaya. All
the employees had been grouped into 3 categories; managerial, supervise and general
level according to their job grades.
In order to complete the Electrified Double Track Project at 2013, within 5
years time, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd had emphasized on increasing
employees’ job performance. Thus, training & development department had been
established to handle matters pertaining trainings.
Different types of training programs had been introduced and used to increase
the ability and performances of employees at infrastructure works. The training
programs are provided based on the needs and the scope of works for different level
employees and departments, and they are only qualified to start working once they
complete the required training and get permission to work.
Hence, employees at all levels except cleaner, tea lady and driver were
encouraged to attend training programs based on their needs.

1.2.2 Background of Establishment of Company
In year 2003, MMC-Corporation Berhad (MMC) signed a Shareholders'
Agreement with Gamuda Berhad to regulate their rights and liabilities inter se as
shareholders of the company which will undertake, carry out and implement the
RM14.448 billion Electrified Double-Tracking Project between Ipoh-Padang Besar
and Seremban-Johor Bahru (2T Project) pursuant to the Letter of Award dated 21
October 2003 issued by the Government of Malaysia.
However in year 2004, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd has received a
letter from the Government of Malaysia informing the joint venture that the
Government had decided to postpone the implementation of the Electrified Double
Track Project to a date to be notified.
On 6 June 2007, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd has received a letter
from Economic Planning Unit of Prime Minister’s Department that the Government
of Malaysia has agreed with the Joint Venture’s proposal to implement the
Electrified Double Track Project on a private financing initiative basis. The
Government and the Joint Venture will commence negotiations on the formal
agreement of the project as soon as possible. As a result, the negotiations led by the
Economic Planning Unit were concluded on Oct 2007.
On 14 December 2007, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd received the
Letter of Acceptance dated 13 December 2007 from the Government of Malaysia
wherein the Government has accepted proposal by MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn
Bhd to carry out the Electrified Double Track Project on a design and build basis for
a lump sum price of RM12.485 billion.
Further to receipt of the Letter of Acceptance from the Government of
Malaysia to carry out the Electrified Double Track Project, CEO Malaysia for MMC
Corporation Berhad, En Hasni Harun and Executive Director of Gamuda Berhad,

Dato’ Ir Haji Azmi bin Mat Norm, today formalised the Condition of Contract for the
RM12.485 billion Electrified Double Track Project with the Government of Malaysia
on 25 July 2008.
As a result, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd received possession of the
sites and began work on the Electrified Double Track Project between Ipoh and
Padang Besar. The RM12.485 billion project involves the realignment and
construction of electrified double rail tracks that span 329km across four northern
states of Perak, Penang, Kedah, and Perlis in Peninsular Malaysia.
However in order to decrease the work burden and complete the project on
time stated, MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd, the Contractor for the Electrified
Double Track Project (EDTP) between Ipoh and Padang Besar subbed the Systems
Works to Balfour Beatty Ansaldo Systems JV Sdn Bhd (BBA JV). Thus, the
Contract Agreement for the Systems Works has been formalised with Balfour Beatty
Ansaldo Systems JV Sdn Bhd (BBA JV) and was announced on 13 March 2009.
1.2.3 Members of Board of Director
MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd is a joint venture company between
MMC Corporation Berhad and Gamuda Berhad. Therefore the members of Board of
Director for the company are the same. Table below show the members of Board of

1.2.4 Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP)
Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) is part of the Malaysian Federal
Government’s project to improve the standards of rail travel in the country, enabling
Malaysians to enjoy a faster, safer and more convenient plus affordable system
public transport.

The Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) from Ipoh to Padang Besar is a
five-year construction project that will replace the existing single track railway line
with two new parallel electrified tracks from Ipoh, Perak to Padang Besar, Perlis,
including new stations, bridges, as well as modern electrification and signalling
systems.
Measuring total alignment length of 329km northern railway which consists
of two sectional lines: Mainline and Kedah line that cuts across four northern states
of Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis.
The Electrified Double Track Project from Ipoh to Padang Besar is expected
to be completed by 2013 and once completed it will link these states to the already
completed electrified double track line from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur and Seremban.
The EDTP comprise of the following infrastructure work:
1. Earthwork in excavation and filling.
2. Construction of new embankment for providing formation for laying railway
track.
3. Construction of Road over Bridge at all essential locations along Project
Corridor.
4. Construction of Rail Bridges.
5. Construction of long land Viaduct.
6. Construction of two tunnels. Each tunnel in 3km long.
7. Construction on all station buildings platforms and Railway staff quarters.
8. Construction of the high speed Railway Track (180kmpt).
9. Electrification work for the new track.
10. Establishing advance communication system of within Railway corridor.
11. All ancillary works related to the construction including land acquisition and
relocation of all major/minor services to facilitate the construction.
Due to completion of works above, the EDTP will connect Padang Besar,
Perlis to Ipoh, Perak, and then to the existing electrified railway line that leads to the

capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. From the main railway hub in KL Central,
commuters will be able to commute to other states in Peninsular Malaysia. It will
significantly reduce travel time and help to ease road congestion which are common
problems faced by motorists.
As a conclusion, the use of electrified locomotive running on Electrified
Double Track (EDT) will benefit local businesses, freight and cargo services through
increased frequency of services, better service efficiency, reduced travel time and
reduces the negative effect of fluctuating costs of fossil fuel as compared to
travelling via road or air. It is also more environmental friendly with no hazardous
emissions and better energy efficiency.

1.2.6 Organization Structure
Figure [Link] show organization structure of MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture
Sdn Bhd. The company is managed by several persons that known as EXCO that
responsible to manage company activities on behalf of members of Board of
Director. In order to decrease EXCO’s work burden, they are assist by a group of
persons called Claims Committee that responsible to handle legal matters.

Moreover, the company is also headed by few persons in different scope of
works in order to enable the company to operate with smoothly: Lee Seng Hoor as
Head of Design; Yeoh Hin Kok as Head of Construction and assist by Ir Abd Razak
Bin Othman as Deputy Head of Construction, and Maslan Othman as a Project
Manager that responsible to manage the whole project.
