ABOUT PUNE
Pune is the ninth-most populous city in India and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra after
the state capital city of Mumbai. Pune has emerged as a prominent location for manufacturing
industries, and has now been recognized as the information technology hub and education hub of the
country hence the is famous as the Oxford of the East & the cultural capital of Maharashtra.
The city is spread over an area of 250.56 Sq. Km with a population of over 3 million.
ESSENTIAL GOALS FOR DESIGN OF STREETS
IN PUNE
Mobility & Safety & Ecology &
Accessibility Comfort Environment
All people should be Make streets safe, Streets to reduce impact
able to move fast, clean, attractive & on natural & built
safely & conveniently comfortable for people environment. To give
on the streets in Pune to walk & drive green streets in the city
ABB [Aundh-Baner-Balewadi]
The exhaustive exercise had Aundh-Baner-Balewadi
(ABB) area emerging as both the democratic and
rational choice.
About 900 acres in ABB area was demarcated for
local area development.
REGION TO BE DEVELOPED
[Link]
WHY ABB?
IMPACT: Possible to make impact happen in a large area (900 acres) with significant population
(40,000 population)
STRATEGIC LOCATION: Located right at the entry point into Pune from Mumbai side
RIVERFRONT: Large 3.5 km riverfront, which could be leveraged for riverfront development
MIXED USE: Mostly residential area today with people going to Hinjewadi to work – can be
developed into mixed use development due to vacant pieces of land
ENTREPRENEURIAL: Potential to create a start-up zone, leveraging entrepreneurial energy of Pune
INCLUSIVENESS: Potential for inclusive transformation of neighborhood with 500 households in
slums
MODEL AREA: Large private land parcel (70 acres) next to riverfront for model development
IDEA FOR ABB [Aundh-Baner-Balewadi]
Pune aspires to create a model neighborhood of livability and sustainability matching global standards
in the selected local area (Aundh-Baner-Balewadi - ABB) by fully deploying all 24 smart city features
in a “future ready” manner. Future ready is critical because as the area develops, it will undergo a 4x
population growth by 2030 (from 40,000 to 160,000). Some examples of planned initiatives are:
Mobility: Livability:
Public transportation 18% to 50% through Increase open spaces from 4% to 10% of total
• 100 e-buses area through
• 26 km BRT [Bus Rapid Transit] route • 13 parks
• 54 bus stop overhaul • 3.4 km world-class riverfront
• 100 e-rickshaws
NMT [Non- Motorized Transport] 1% to 8%
through
• 27 km bicycle tracks
• 60 km footpath redesign and placemaking
ISSUES OF THE
STREET, ABB
OVERVIEW
• Lack of public transportation, along with an
un-stemmed rise of private vehicles has
resulted in massive congestions and very low
average speeds (18 km/h against norm of 30
km/h).
• The gaps are intensified with a limited traffic
adherence and dilapidated walking and cycling
infrastructure.
• Preference to motorized Vehicles in street
design.
• No segregation of the road spaces.

SOLUTION FOR THE
STREETS
ITI Road
The Aundh-ITI road serves both, residential area
on one side and the Industrial Training Institute
on the other side.
Earlier the stretch had a footpath only on ITI side
while the residential edge remained unclean and
unattended without a pedestrian path. Total ITI Road stretch covers 1.5 kms.
Architect – Prasanna Desai
The beautification of ITI Road began, in Aundh, Pune after a minimal
intervention was suggested to evolve the street into a people’s plaza.
• All the trees were saved and conserved.
• Disposable waste was segregated into
biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
• The second phase of the project was aimed at
spreading awareness to create a pedestrian-
friendly.
• Cycle-friendly realm
• To establish that streets are for people and should
be designed around them.

D.P. Road is a 1.5km long stretch of road with 24m Initial proposal
Right of Way (ROW).
The initial proposal for the redevelopment of the road was to
keep the existing ROW for a one way road.
A complaint of Heavy traffic jam from residents staying
around the area and Shopkeepers complained of Parking
woes.
Final proposal
The Street was only 25% filled up during the Day.
One way created mobility problems for residents, especially
Hospitals.
Hence a 36m wide road wide two-way road was designed.

CONCLUSION
All the streets have been redesigned in a way that promotes the safety of pedestrians and
cyclists, creates quality public spaces along the edges, exhibits high-quality craftsmanship for
street elements, and carves out spaces for various street activities such as hawkers, parking,
and many such.
RIVERFRONT DEVELOPMENT
PAWANA RIVER
PROJECT BACKGROUND
MULA RIVER
• Central Pune lies at the confluence of the Mula
and Mutha Rivers. The MulaMutha River
formed by the confluence of the Mula and MULA-MUTHA RIVER
Mutha rivers in the city of Pune further meets
the Bhima River. The Pawana and Indrayani
Rivers, tributaries of the Bhima River, traverse
the northwestern outskirts of metropolitan
Pune.
• The Mula, Mutha and Mula- Mutha Rivers are
unhygienic, neglected and characterized by
unplanned development. The city has turned
its back to these rivers.
• In order to cope up with these current issues
and create a meaningful public realm along the
river, the Pune Municipal Corporation has
taken up the Riverfront Development Plan for
Mula, Mutha and Mula-Mutha Rivers in entire
Pune Municipal Corporation area. [Link] › CMP-Report_20160824
PROJECT MODULE
The projects have been packaged in two modules based on its nature, functioning, technological features
etc.
Module 1. -River Water Cleaning
• Understanding the acute need of cleaning the river
and its beautification, the project has been
envisaged.
Module 2. -Riverfront

CONCLUSION
• For a very rapidly growing city like Pune, the principal challenge is to improve the
quality of the river water and its surrounding environment thereby utilizing the
riverside land for recreational and other functions.
• For the better bonding between the river and the city it is necessary to open up the
riverfront and make it accessible to public.
• On the other hand due care should be taken to prevent the river environment
from degrading through excessive public use.
