Daily Evaporation Rate Calculations

The document contains the final examination questions for a hydrology course taken by Julia R. Pomares. It includes 3 problems related to calculating rates of evaporation. The solutions show the steps to calculate total inflow, outflow, water losses, and evaporation rates based on given catchment areas, precipitation amounts, reservoir spreads, and canal discharge rates.

1. (10 pts.) The catchment area of an irrigation tank is 70 km 2. The constant water
spread during October 2006 was 2 km2. During that month, the uniform
precipitation over the catchment was recorded to be 100 mm. 50% of the
precipitation reaches the tank. The irrigation canal discharges at a uniform rate of
1.00 m 3 /s in the month of October.

Assuming seepage losses to be 50% of the evaporation losses, find out the daily
rate of evaporation for October 2006.

Solution:

70 × 106 × 100 × 0.5

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐼𝑛𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 = = 3.50 𝑥 106 𝑚3
1000

𝑂𝑢𝑡𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑙 = 1 × 3600 × 24 × 31 = 2.68 𝑥 106 𝑚3

𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 3.50 × 106 – 2.68 × 106 = 0.82 × 106 𝑚3

Seepage loss to be 50% of the evaporation losses,

𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1.5 × 𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠

0.82 × 106
𝐸𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠 = = 0.55 × 106 𝑚3
1.5

0.55 × 106 × 1000

𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = = 8.8 𝑚𝑚/𝑑𝑎𝑦/𝑚2
2 × 106 𝑥 31
2. (10 pts.) In the case of a 1.5-m diameter circular pan, following observations were
taken from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
(a) Quantity of water added to keep the water level in the pan constant is 5.0 lit.
(b) Precipitation during the observation period is 10 mm
(c) Leakage from the pan is 2.0 lit.

Find the rate of evaporation from the pan.

Solution:
𝜋
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑛 = × 1.52 = 1.767 𝑚 2
4

𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑛 = 1.767 × 103 × 10 × 10−3

𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑛 = 17.67 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑏𝑦 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑝𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

𝐸𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑛 = 17.67 + 5 − 2 = 20.67 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠

20.67 × 10−3 × 103

𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = = 1.17 𝑚𝑚/𝑚2 /ℎ
1.767 × 10

3. (10 pts.) The uniform precipitation over a catchment area covering 80 km 2 received
a total precipitation of 80 mm in a month. 60% of the precipitation reached the
reservoir. The spread of reservoir during that month was 2.5 km 2. The irrigation
canal discharges at a constant rate of 1.1 m3/s. If the seepage losses were 60%
of the evaporation losses, find the daily rate of evaporation.

Solution:

Total Area = 80 km²

Precipitation = 80 mm in a month (30 days)
60 percent reached to the reservoir
Canal discharge = 1.1 m³/s
Seepage losses = 60 percent of evaporation losses

80 × 106 × 80 × 0.6
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐼𝑛𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 = = 3.84 𝑥 106 𝑚3
1000

𝑂𝑢𝑡𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑙 = 1 .1 × 3600 × 24 × 30 = 2.8512 𝑥 106 𝑚3

𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 3.84 𝑥 106 𝑚3 – 2.8512 𝑥 106 𝑚3 = 0.9888 × 106 𝑚3

Seepage loss is 60% that of evaporation loss,

𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1.6 × 𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠

0.9888 × 106
𝐸𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠 = = 0.618 × 106 𝑚3
1.6

0.618 × 106 × 1000

𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = = 8.24 𝑚𝑚/𝑑𝑎𝑦/𝑚2
2.5 × 106 𝑥 30
