1.0 Purpose and Scope

This Standard lists Preventive Maintenance (PM) tasks that are applicable to two or
more Standard Plant Operations (SPO) product lines (N-Plants, VSPAs, membranes,
or N-PSAs).
A Master PM task within this Standard is referred to as a Standard Plant Operations
PM (STDSPO). The STDSPOs listed in this document may or may not apply to
every product line or every facility; refer to section 2.0 for full details.
This Standard represents the best written summary of STDSPO PMs as of the
revision date shown in the footer of this Standard.
This Standard is used in conjunction with SMP-080 to provide a complete PM
program.
SPO facilities have different combinations and types of equipment, and are subject to
a variety of laws/regulations/codes. Because of this, some PMs will not be
applicable at every facility. Most are written specific to a particular type of equipment
and jurisdictional applicability. If the type of equipment (asset) addressed in the PM
does not exist at the subject facility or if the subject laws/regulations/codes do not
apply, that facility is exempt from that PM. The Issue Owner and Technical
Resources identified in this Standard make these determinations and apply SOP-103
to effect the changes in EAM outside of this SMP being revised and released.

2.0 Work Process

See SMP-080 section 2 for the work process on edits to SMPs like this one that
define a PM Program (those that define Master PMs)..

3.0 Summary of Master PMs

In this revision, those shown in green had major edits, those in orange were deleted,
those unshaded had no edits, and those in yellow had minor edits (mostly just
formatting updated – Interval inserted at bottom, Tasks items bulleted, etc. Those
calling out SMP-091 and dealing instrumentation had text revised so conflicts with
policies defined in SMP-091 were eliminated and other text added to prevent
duplication of effort with like PMs in SMP-080 or other PMs within this SMP).

For more information about the differences between major and

minor edits, contact those named on SOP-103.

4.0 List of Master PMs with Task Instructions

The text in this section does not show all the details assigned to
the PM; see Attachment 1 for all details (such as: Interval, Type,
Outage, Expertise, etc.).

PM
Description Task Instructions
Schedule
STDSPO- Reciprocating Task Instructions:
0003.1-01 Compressor – 1. Inspect the distance piece purge blower filter and mufflers
Periodic 2. Verify the pressure differential on the suction and discharge screens. Clean / replace the screens as required
Inspection 3. Verify schedule of next planned gas side overhaul as determined by compressor capacity and measured wear
rate of rider and piston rings
a. The pressure packing, rider and piston rings should be changed every 2 years when the compressor is new,
after cylinder reconditioning or a change in ring material. Gas side overhauls can be extended after wear rate is
established and documented
b. For horizontal and angled cylinders, wear rate of the rider rings can be established by piston to cylinder
clearance. Verify corresponding piston ring wear rate by removal of piston & inspection of the rider and piston
rings
c. For vertical cylinders, piston to cylinder clearance checks are of little value. Wear rate should be established by
removal of the piston and inspection of the rider and piston rings
d. For Sulzer machines visually check oil scrapers and piston rod surfaces. Check guide bearing - piston rod
clearance
e. For SIAD compressors with bronze piston guide rings, inspect and verify that screws are staked
4. Review and adjust the schedule of the following PM’s (as applicable) to align with the timing of the gas side
overhaul
a. SMP-080 STD-0196 Compressor – Gas Side Inspection (Wet Gas Service)
b. SMP-080 STD-0197 Main Drive Coupling Inspection

Service
0218 and SMP-091 call for SMP-091 attch 5 to be filled out once for the auto vlv/solenoid vlv because both vlvs
are interdependent thus one record will suffice).
NOTE: Understanding there are a number of automatic valves in the facility, the intent of this PM is not to have
every automatic valve inspected at once each time this PM is due, instead the intent is to inspect a collection of
automatic valves when the PM is due and Year after Year do the same for a different collection of automatic
valves. Each facility will need to manage how this is accomplished so eventually all automatic valves are
inspected as prescribed (possibly by plant sections for example, cold box 1, BLOC 2, AC 1, FGC, etc.). Automatic
and solenoid valves may be grouped together in one inspection record when their operation interdependent.

Tasks:
[ ] Review the inspection records to identify which Automatic/Solenoid valves are due for inspection according to
the following:
1) Every 1 year - those having an average cycle time < 5 min and record same using SMP-091 attch 5.
2) Every 2 years (see SMP-091) - those in QA service and record same using SMP-091 attch 5.
3) Every 3 years - those having an average cycle time 5 - 60 min and record same using SMP-091 attch 5.
4) Every 4 years (see SMP-091) - those in Safety service and record same using SMP-091 attch 5.
5) Every 5 years (see SMP-091) - those in Equipment Protection Service and record same using SMP-091 attch
5.
6) Every 7 years - those having an average cycle time > 60 min and record same using SMP-091 attch 5.
7) As/if desired (see SMP-091) - all others not addressed above and record same as/if desired (may use SMP-
091 attch 5).

[ ] Whenever conducting above inspections also look and check the following: 1)Conduct leak check (if possible),
2)Check valve packing for leakage, 3)Inspect mounting brackets, couplings, and linkages for tightness and signs
of wear, 4)Check coupling bolt torque to manufacturer’s specifications, 5)Inspect actuator for signs internal
leakage, 6)Clean/replace solenoid valves, 7)Inspect tubing and hoses for damage and signs of leakage, 8)Inspect
actuator stops—locked in place and properly adjusted to minimize sticking and leakage.
[ ] Whenever conducting above inspections on valves with positioners also look and check the following: 1)
Inspect positioners for proper operation and signs of leakage, lubricate moving parts of positioners (roller bearing,
arms, etc.). 2) Inspect and clean the positioners pilot/shuttle valve (if applicable). 3) Inspect the instrumentation
pressure relief device.

STDSPO- 480 Volt Motor Task Instructions:

0500.0-01 Connections 1. Inspect all wiring connections in motor junction boxes for:
a. Signs of rubbing
b. Proper connectors
c. Signs of water
d. Integrity of insulation / tape
2. If signs of rubbing are noticed: Cushion wires / junction box with rubber sheeting or reconfigure to eliminate
rubbing.
3. Insulate the electrical conductors as detailed below:
a. Apply a high quality vinyl tape (e.g. 3M 33+) adhesive side out against the bolted connection. This is to provide
ease in removal if necessary. A varnished cambric tape can be used in this step to provide the same function and
provide some physical protection against sharp edges.
b. Apply a self-binding rubber tape to eliminate any sharp edges that may exist with the bolted connection. 3M
130C tape is an example of such tape. If varnished cambric tape is used in the first step, there may not be a need
for the rubber tape to smooth out edges.
c. Cover the full surface of the connection with half-lapped layer of vinyl tape (3M 33+) to provide moisture barrier
and insulating medium. The layers of tape shall be installed without voids to preclude any contaminants from
entering the connection.
d. In lieu of the above, several commercially available motor termination kits may be used, provided that they are
sized correctly and are used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

STDSPO-0003 Reciprocating Compressor – Periodic Inspection

Required Interval: 1 Year
Type (Duplicate/Fixed/Variable): Fixed
Outside Expertise Required (Y/N)? N
Requires Product Outage (Y/N/Possibly)? Possibly
WO Class: 50-MAINT
Task Instructions:
1. Inspect the distance piece purge blower filter and mufflers
2. Verify the pressure differential on the suction and discharge screens. Clean /
replace the screens as required
3. Verify schedule of next planned gas side overhaul as determined by compressor
capacity and measured wear rate of rider and piston rings
a. The pressure packing, rider and piston rings should be changed every 2
years when the compressor is new, after cylinder reconditioning or a change
in ring material. Gas side overhauls can be extended after wear rate is
established and documented
b. For horizontal and angled cylinders, wear rate of the rider rings can be
established by piston to cylinder clearance. Verify corresponding piston ring
wear rate by removal of piston & inspection of the rider and piston rings
c. For vertical cylinders, piston to cylinder clearance checks are of little value.
Wear rate should be established by removal of the piston and inspection of
the rider and piston rings

STDSPO-0500 480 Volt Motor Connections

Interval: 1 Year
Type (Duplicate/Fixed/Variable): Fixed
Outside Expertise Required (Y/N)? N
Requires Product Outage (Y/N/Possibly)? Y
WO Class: 50-MAINT
Task Instructions:
1. Inspect all wiring connections in motor junction boxes for:
a. Signs of rubbing
b. Proper connectors
c. Signs of water
d. Integrity of insulation / tape
1. If signs of rubbing are noticed: Cushion wires / junction box with rubber sheeting
or reconfigure to eliminate rubbing.
2. Insulate the electrical conductors as detailed below:
a. Apply a high quality vinyl tape (e.g. 3M 33+) adhesive side out against the
bolted connection. This is to provide ease in removal if necessary. A
varnished cambric tape can be used in this step to provide the same function
and provide some physical protection against sharp edges.

b. Apply a self-binding rubber tape to eliminate any sharp edges that may exist
with the bolted connection. 3M 130C tape is an example of such tape. If
varnished cambric tape is used in the first step, there may not be a need for
the rubber tape to smooth out edges.
c. Cover the full surface of the connection with half-lapped layer of vinyl tape
(3M 33+) to provide moisture barrier and insulating medium. The layers of
tape shall be installed without voids to preclude any contaminants from
entering the connection.
d. In lieu of the above, several commercially available motor termination kits
may be used, provided that they are sized correctly and are used in
accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
