LISTENING PART TASK 2.
Banksy is a controversial contemporary British artist and illustrator whose real identity is not known. A
graffiti master, painter, activist, filmmaker and all-purpose provocateur. On his way to becoming an
international icon, the subversive and secretive street artist turned the art world upside-down. This time
he takes over British museum with his biggest show yet.
Watch a short YouTube video entitled “Banksy is back” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-
RDdrZ2WtU&t=113s and answer the questions:
1) What was Banksy’s idea of exhibiting in such a traditional place as British museum?
His work is basically street art but controversially he displayed his work in a traditional place
British museum to show and to conveys the hidden messages which Banksy want to pass on
public and moreover, his works are connected with political themes or social commentary it’s
significant to deal with in the field of art and that’s why Banksy showed his art expression as
the way of spreading his crucial idea.
2) List the exhibits and comment on the meaning they convey (what do they symbolize?)
The rickshaw The whole painting is done in black and white, except for the two
people being pulled, attracting the eye there. He emphasized the
contrast between American and African-American.
People are increasingly ignoring the struggles and pains of others
for their own interests and comfort, and furthermore, living like
that is becoming more natural, and Banksy has the meaning of
criticizing such a society. And as another meaning, it can be
inferred that it contains the message of criticism of the problem of
child exploitation in some countries.
Chicken Mc nuggets Chicken nuggets were on chicken legs, seemingly dipping
themselves in sauce. Major themes are common through many of
Banksy’s pieces, one of which being focused on the treatment of
animals. It has been processed into nuggets from chicken, and
while watching the nugget enter the sauce by itself, people have
already forgotten their correct identity and have a meaning that
they cannot escape from the confines created by society.
New landmark canvas While referring to chimpanzees with lower intelligence than
(Described as humans as humans, it contains the meaning of critically looking at
chimpanzees and the our emotional response by comparing them to chimpanzees as if
Court) humans gave their trials in court.
Cave paintings are the world’s most primitive form of art. And
Shopping trolley in the Banksy gave us opportunity to answer ourselves about the
rock question which is the origin and the meaning behind our place on
earth. Moreover, Banksy is basically telling the world our modern
globalization patterns can be compared to the almost basic ways
of the primitive man.
3) All Banksy’s works are immediately sold out. What’s the reason for it? Who do you think is a
Banksy’s typical admirer? Justify your answer.
Banksy's intended typical admirer is the teenagers who are impacted by visual expressions of
political, social issues and commentaries. I reckon the pictures of street art and graffiti thing
have become popular from the Internet which is social media. They can post on Instagram,
Twitter, Facebook and then these images spread around the globe. So, the teenagers who are
fast in the trend have a high impact. And sometimes, rather than expressing the opinions you
want to convey with words, it is more effective to use artistic expressions to inspire or shock
the public emotionally. Furthermore, Banksy changed audience’s perception of art. In the past,
street art and graffiti were thought to be vandalism but Banksy took our understanding of
street art on the whole new another level. And street art and graffiti have become one of the
means of communication of people of different ages and different nations.
4) Comment on why his art is called controversial. Do you agree? Why/Why not?
I totally agree with his art is controversial. Because the problems he deals with are about the
criticism of social problems, and it is natural that the answers to them are always controversial
because there is no right or wrong answer. And even on one topic, public have different and various
opinions. However, as the controversy is large, the impact of his paintings can be proved to be
strong. So, on the contrary, the controversy was also a factor in his success in the field of art.
5) How does being anonymous serve him? Can you think of why an artist wouldn’t want fame and
prominence?
Initially, the street art and graffiti can be considered criminal damage, so it's thought the artist
stayed anonymous to keep out of trouble from police or government. When a person tries to do
something anonymously, it usually works on the bad side, but for him, I think that anonymity is
used to protect his artistic freedom. Each artist may have their own set of priorities. For that
reason, his priorities would have been more artistic desire to express what he wants,
artistically, and to spread ideas and ideologies to people rather than fame as an artist.
6) What’s your personal attitude to this form of artistic expression?
I acknowledge that being anonymous is also a form of art, and I think that anonymity has
established itself as a trademark for him. If I meet the works of an artist who works
anonymously as the public's position of appreciating art, I will appreciate it more interestingly
based on curiosity than when dealing with other works. Personally, I prefer works that deal
with social issues while always containing hidden meanings or messages rather than just
aesthetic works of art. And I think that works that criticize social issues have more than
aesthetic values. Because when criticizing about society, it was impossible to convey criticism
artistically in the past, and freedom of expression was suppressed. However, since the present
times are different, it is very significant to more actively produce works related to social
criticism as it contributes to the development of our society.
7) In one sentence formulate what art is.
Art is a diverse range of human experiences in designing visual artifacts, executing objects, and
communicating the imagination of the artist.
