Creating a career development plan is essential for both the company and the employees, as a
good development plan leads to employee satisfaction, improvement of performance and
increased employee loyalty and motivation.
For a career development program to be successful, it is needed that takes into account both
the needs of the company and the individual career needs of each employee.
The main types of professional development plans are:
- Contuining education courses
- Professional organisations and seminars participation
- Increased duties and responsabilities
Now I am going to explain how an international technology company plans the development
program, so that its employees can carry it out in the most profitable way for both the
company and the employee, since in the technology sector continuous learning is very
important.
We can use Accenture as an example, as its growth has been enormous in recent years.
Coaching program: It offers a complete professional development programme, in which each
employee is assigned a person from Human Resources, who will be their career counsellors,
that help them to achieve their professional goals. They get to know what their employees'
passions are, so that they can direct training towards developing those skills. This career
counsellor accompanies each employee who has been assigned to him or her along the way.
Once they have been counselled and it has been determined in which sectors they want to
develop, they are assigned to specific training. Different methods of developing these skills are
available:
Internal promotion:
There are two official times of internal promotion per year, December and June.
It is assessed against the profile of each employee and against the situation in the labour
market.
If the employee is promoted, the salary and tasks are adjusted with respect to the goals he/she
wishes to achieve. They are also provided with special trainings to achieve these goals.
