Assume any missed data and methods if necessary, submission date( March 25, 2022)
1. Explain what you understand by “average response”, “mode participation factor,”
“degree of freedom,” “principal mode,” “natural frequency,” “transmissibility,”
“damping” and “critical damping”.
2. If we have a system with a combination of spring and connected to a mass, then
connected to a bob (a pendulum-like arrangement) is given below.
a) How many degrees of freedom if we apply a dynamic loading acting on the system?
b) How many degrees of freedom if we make the inextensible to spring constant?
c) What are those independent coordinates involved in the system for both cases a and b?
3. A machine foundation can be idealized as amass spring systems. The foundation can be
subjected to a force that is given by: Q (kN) = 35.6sinωt. Weight of the machine
foundation =178kN, Frequency = 13.33Hz, spring constant =70,000kN/m. Determine the
maximum and minimum force transmitted to the subgrade.
4. For a machine foundation, given weight = 60 kN, spring constant =11,000 kN/m, and
c=200kNs/m a) Determine whether the system is over damped, underdamped, and
critically damped b) logarithmic decrement c) determine the ratio of two successive
amplitude d) determine the damped natural frequency
5. A mass spring system with two degree of freedom is shown in figure below, determine
the natural frequencies ωn1 and ωn2 as a function of k1, k2, k3, m1 and m2.
6. List and discuss the factors affecting shear strength of cohesive soils under static and
dynamic?
7. Describe the effect of the following on the strength of clay soil
a) number of pulses of loading
b) wave form of pulsating load
c) one –dimensional and two-dimensional loading
d) drainage conditions
e) loading time
8. Differentiate between the structure of undisturbed and remolded soils. Draw stress-strain
curves for both. If an undisturbed clay sample is vibrated, what type of structure do you
expect after the vibration have ceased?
9. Determine the active force per unit length of the wall and the location of line of action for
PAE (assume rotation of the wall about its bottom) by referring to the figure below. If
β=00, i=0, ɤ=17.50kN/m3, ϕ=36, δ=180, H=4.5m, kv=0.2, kh=0.3.
10. Determine the weight of a gravity retaining wall 4m high
Give parameters β=00, i=0, ɤ=17.50kN/m3, ϕb= ϕ=35, δ=0.5ϕ, AV=0.2,
Factor of safety=1.5
a. For static condition
b. For zero displacement condition under earthquake loading and
c. For a displacement of 50.8mm under earthquake loading.
11. List and discuss the factor on which liquefaction of saturated sands depends?
12. What do you understand by the following;
a) Initial liquefaction
b) complete liquefaction
c) cyclic mobility
