ORGANIC BUILDING AND BUILDING MATERIALS

The usage of natural building materials leads to healthier buildings thanks to their ability to

“breathe” by absorbing and giving off moisture for a healthy indoor environment. Materials such as

wood, straw, hemp, bamboo, are used to create more energy-efficient buildings, that are solid and

safe, but at the same time, better for the environment.

BAMBOO: The advantages of using bamboo is that the plant require very little water to grow
and pesticides or chemicals are not required to speed up their growth. Another plus is that
bamboo plants release extra oxygen and absorb more carbon dioxide when compared to other
trees. The strong roots of bamboo hold the soil together, stabilizes it and prevents soil erosion.

HEMP: is a building composite similar to concrete, except it’s made by wet-mixing hemp hurds
(woody fibers from the plant core) with a lime-based binder and water. serving several
construction and insulation purposes and it can be used in combination with other building
materials to form both floors and roofs, providing an insulating layer.
STRAW BALES: are a very strong building element for houses. which can be used as filling material
between carriers, are stacked on top of each other, and the walls are plastered with natural materials. These
thick walls provide excellent insulation and offer 75% energy efficiency compared to traditional houses.

ADOBE: is a common prehistoric building material that is widely used in arid lands mainly
because it offers excellent stability in climates of extreme dryness. It is wrongly perceived as a
sign of poverty probably because of its cheap price and mud composition, but it is also used to
create contemporary houses that are gifted with the thermal comfort, the low energy
consumption for heating during winter or cooling during summer.
STONE: original green building material. It does not require other materials or resources to
create it. There is an abundant supply with different veining, textures, colors, shapes, and
technical characteristics that make it possible for stone to be used in a wide range of
applications. Stone’s varying appearance is the result of millions of years of geologic change and
mineral composition. Natural stone contains no harmful chemicals or toxins, so you can be rest
assured that your interior environment will be healthy

Malak Abdullah:
WOOD: People prefer building with wood for several reasons, including: light weight, flexibility,
durability, resistance to external factors, and its psychological impact because it brings vitality
and psychological comfort because it contains insulating materials capable of absorbing sounds.
Modern wood construction is characterized by the use of more materials before they are
processed, shorter construction times, a more meticulous planning process, and a quality
assurance of the production system.

Glass: is a type of material used in windows, tableware and optics The history of the glass
industry dates back to 3600 BC in Mesopotamia, Egypt and Syria Soda-lime sheet glass is
typically used as transparent glazing material, typically as windows in external walls of buildings
Structural glazing systems represent one of the most significant architectural innovations of
modern times, where glass buildings now often dominate skylines of many modern cities

Plastic: is a solid material In developed economies, about a third of plastic is used in packaging
and roughly the same in buildings in applications such as piping, plumbing or vinyl siding. Plastic
is largely produced in China and in general in East Asia, And there are many types of plastic
used in construction :Acrylic , Composites , Polycarbonate , Polypropylene , Polyvinyl Chloride
BRICK: is a type of block used to build walls, pavements and other elements in masonry
construction. Bricks are produced in numerous classes, types, materials, and sizes which vary
with region and time period, and are produced in bulk [Link] bricks are one of the
longest-lasting and strongest building materials, sometimes referred to as artificial stone, and
have been used since circa 4000 BC It was used by the early civilization in the Mediterranean
The Roman legions operated mobile kilns, and built large brick structures throughout the Roman
Empire, stamping the bricks with the seal of the legion
SOIL BAGS: The idea began when military trenchers used soil bags in World War II to stop the
flow of flood water on soldiers Then an expert in construction techniques called “Gernot
Minke” in Germany began introducing the technology of using soil bags to build Walls in homes
in 1960 with the architectural organization known as “The Earth’s Call” in Asperia, constructed
the dome buildings, relying on the single soil bags Then they developed that where they also
discovered the possibility of using a single roll or an uninterrupted roll instead of using single
bags, so they created one long roll that they could fill with soil and roll as much as they needed
and control its length.. In this way the walls became undivided and thus became more cohesive.

Plastic materials have advanced significantly in construction through their diverse forms such as acrylics, composites, and polycarbonate, among others, used in various applications including piping and siding . These innovations offer advantages in terms of durability and flexibility, reducing reliance on traditional, more resource-intensive materials. However, the sustainability of these innovations is debatable, as plastic production often relies on fossil fuels and can generate non-biodegradable waste, presenting challenges in long-term environmental impact .

Straw bales used in construction provide a structural benefit and enhance energy efficiency by serving as a strong and insulating filling material between wall carriers . When plastered with natural materials, straw bale walls can achieve 75% energy efficiency, significantly decreasing energy use compared to traditional houses . The thickness of these walls also contributes to their structural integrity, making them a robust building element .

Soil bags offer several advantages, including adaptability and cost-effectiveness in construction, by providing cohesive and strong structural components using readily available materials . Developed initially for military use, their construction with continuous rolls instead of single bags increases wall stability and cohesion . However, limitations might include challenges in scalability and aesthetic constraints compared to more traditional materials, which may limit their use to specific types of construction like dome buildings .

Stone's variability in appearance and suitability for construction applications arises from millions of years of geological change and mineral composition . Different veining, textures, colors, and shapes result from these processes, allowing its use in a wide range of applications, from structural to decorative . Its natural formation without the need for additional materials makes it both a sustainable and versatile choice in construction .

Adobe is considered sustainable and economically viable because it is made from natural materials like mud and clay, which are abundant and low-cost . It provides excellent thermal comfort, reducing the need for additional heating or cooling in extreme climates due to its ability to maintain stable temperatures . This property reduces energy bills, contributing to its economic viability. The perception of adobe as a sign of poverty is misleading given its efficiency and sustainability benefits .

Bamboo offers several environmental advantages over traditional timber. It requires very little water to grow and does not need pesticides or chemicals to encourage growth . Bamboo also absorbs more carbon dioxide and releases extra oxygen compared to other trees, which helps reduce the carbon footprint of constructions . Additionally, bamboo's strong roots help prevent soil erosion by stabilizing the soil .

Roman innovations in brick construction, such as the use of mobile kilns and large-scale production, have significantly influenced modern building practices by setting a foundation for mass production techniques . The use of bricks stamped with the seal of the legion exemplified quality assurance and consistency, a practice echoed in modern manufacturing standards . This historical precedent in standardization and efficiency has paved the way for bricks becoming an enduring component in contemporary architecture .

Glass has been historically significant in construction since 3600 BC, primarily in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Syria . Today, glass is a major architectural innovation used prominently in modern structural glazing systems, contributing to the iconic skylines of many cities . Its widespread modern use includes windows and optics, facilitating energy-efficient buildings due to its translucent properties that optimize natural light . This evolution from tableware and basic glazing to a critical architectural material underlines its increasing importance in design and construction .

Hemp, when mixed with a lime-based binder, forms a building composite similar to concrete that serves as an insulating layer . This material can be used for construction and insulation purposes in walls, floors, and roofs, thereby enhancing the overall energy efficiency of a building by reducing the need for additional heating and cooling .

Wood is preferred for its psychological benefits, including the sense of vitality it imparts and its ability to absorb sound, creating a tranquil indoor environment . Its natural aesthetic and tactile properties also provide psychological comfort and enhance overall well-being, making it a favored choice in modern construction for spaces meant to be calming and inviting .
