WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

How do we feel when our family or a friend is verbally or physically hurt

because he or she is a gay? Do you think we have the right to harm
someone because he or she is a Muslim, a Christian, a Hindu or a
Buddhist? Where is humanity when we disrespect prostitutes, alcoholics,
drug addicts, and criminals? Do you know the reason why black people
suffer from discrimination and violence? When we put negative labels on
certain people, to groups, and their philosophies, we lose our intelligence
and open-mindedness. We take away hopes from them to change to be
responsible and helpful and chances to contribute to the progress of our
families, organizations, and countries.

Judging people, groups, and ideas without any valid reasons and truths
is utterly immoral and inhumane. Adequate learning of these persons,
factions, and thinking can give us right perceptions and appropriate
responses. We must be smart and sensitive to feelings of others, so we can
have healthy and harmonious relationships.

However, our realities are unfair, cruel, and sad. A lot of people destroy
one another because of their negative attitudes and behaviors towards
others. These can be caused by history, upbringing, lack of education,
stereotyping, media, and absence of respect and care. On a positive note,
we can turn these things around by educating people and by opposing
biases and prejudices and by supporting persons and communities, so
they will enjoy their rights and freedoms they own and deserve.

Learning Competency: -

2
NegOr_Q3_English9_Module1_v2
In your previous module, you learned the different social issues,
concerns, or dispositions of our society. In connection, we will be tackling
about the difference between bias and prejudice which were viewed as
problems/issues that we need to address in order to create a harmonious
environment.

Analyze the given illustrations for you to easily understand about bias
and prejudice. Then, answer the questions below.

Picture #1

And Sally…Your work was just as

good as Tom’s,but I’m going to give
Excellent job on your chores!
you 20 pesos, because you need to
Here’s your allowance of 100. get used to doing chores for free
for your husband someday…

1. How much was given to the little boy for doing an excellent job? How
about Sally, did she receive as much as her brother? (bias)
2. What was the reason of the father for doing so? (prejudice)

3
NegOr_Q3_English9_Module1_v2
Picture # 2

1. Why was the man angry with the beggar?

2. What did he tell the beggar to do?
3. Why did the manager tell the applicant to get lost? (bias)
4. Why do you think the manager dislike him? (prejudice)
Picture number 1 shows the difference between bias and prejudice.
The man gives a bigger amount to the boy than the girl. That’s an example
of bias because the amount given is not fair between the two of them.
Prejudice comes in when the man tells Sally the reason why she only
receives a smaller amount. The man has this preconceived idea that the girl
needs not earn more because her job is just to do chores for free for her
husband someday.

Picture number 2 shows a man yelling to a beggar to get a job instead

of begging for money. However, when he applied for a job, the man told him
to get lost and did not get the job because he’s a gay. Bias was when the
man denied the application of a gay applicant. Prejudice is when gays are
not qualified to take a position in a company. Do you get the difference
now?

This time let us deepen your understanding of the lesson. Let us define
prejudice first. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that you have based on
no reason or actual experience or a multitude of experiences for the specific
group or individual. It simply means to pre-judge others. You have

4
NegOr_Q3_English9_Module1_v2
developed some sort of thought about these people or this person on the way
he or she performed without any reason or fact behind it.

An individual may be prejudiced against others based on factors such as

race, age, gender, social orientation, class status, religion, nationality, and
amongst other things.

For examples:

1. Some women think one who wears a two-piece swimsuit indecent.

2. Some people believe that Muslims are dangerous.
3. A woman has a fear for a man with lots of tattoos.
4. According to some people a child who came from a broken family is a
troublemaker.

Prejudices are thoughts, opinions, or feelings toward a person or a

group especially if they are negative. Merriam Webster and Cambridge
Dictionary share similar definition of prejudice that it is an opinion without bases.

Bias, on the other hand, means a tendency to favor one person, group,
thing or point of view over another, often in an unfair way. A person
becomes biased because of unfair favors.

For examples:

1. A judge in a competition prefers one contestant to another to win

because both of them belong to same place.
2. A white teenager plays with his white classmates not with those of
different color.
3. A manager does not hire a more qualified female applicant because for
him men are smarter and stronger than women.
4. Boys are asked to do heavy tasks in school because they are stronger
than girls.
These biases occur because one identifies himself with another individual,
group, or ideology.

Moreover, bias is “the action of supporting or opposing a particular

person or thing in an unfair way because of allowing personal opinions
(prejudices) to influence your judgment” according to Cambridge
Dictionary.

Bias is a result of a prejudice. It is the action that is actually happened

to one group or a person because of the way that you feel about them.
Bias is the action and prejudice is the thought the reason why you
have unfair treatment toward a person or towards something.

Note: Those who agree with numbers 1 and 2 in the “What’s in” part is
5
NegOr_Q3_English9_Module1_v2
being biased. While those who agree with numbers 5 and 6 are showing
prejudice. Numbers 3 and 4 are situations showing with fair and just
treatment.

Optional: (Watch Bias Vs. Prejudice [Link]

Directions: Identify each situation as a bias or a prejudice. Write bias or

prejudice as an answer for each item in your notebook.

1. A mayor gave a job to a less qualified resident who is his relative.

2. A man hates gays.
3. Teachers of a private school add points to scores of students whose parents
donate cash and or equipment.
4. A Filipino nurse in a clinic assists Filipino patients first.
5. Some Asians think Western products are better.
6. White people are more intelligent than black people.
7. An old woman is denied a job because a young one is hired even if the
former has better qualities.
8. Some people consider Muslims dangerous.
9. A teenager finds people who still wear traditional clothes crazy and
backward.
10. A person avoids those who do not belong to his religion.

From what you have learned, in what ways are prejudice and bias different?

6
NegOr_Q3_English9_Module1_v2
This time let us read and understand the lyrics of the song. How would
you feel if you are the one being misjudged? Misjudge means to form an
opinion or idea about someone or something thatis unfair or wrong.

Or I could be a little lamb Only by the colors you have seen
To love 'em is to know 'em
Please don't try and judge me Whether red, yellow, white, or green
Only by the colors you have seen
To love me is to know me 'Cause color is skin deep
Whether red, yellow, black or green But true beauty lives on and on
Color is skin deep
