8. Troubleshooting – damaged TR100 / 101
Is one of the driver boards faulty; it can be replaced by a same card 1:1. If
there is no spare part for the driver card (no other drives), can be operated
with a reduced power in the drive, by the following note!
These intentions should be done only in cooperation
with Bentec service.
If any IGBT (MA100) has no driver card is installed, there is no guarantee
that the IGBT is closed or keep locked. If a driver card is not supplied with
24V it cannot create -15V for lock the IGBT. The IGBT has to be
disconnected at the output side (copper bars ) to the motor choke.
This requires a disconnecting and isolating the copper bars! This has to be
done only on the three phases of the faulty driver card.
In the controller, the value for maximum current, has to be reduced!

8. Troubleshooting – over current
An overcurrent of the power stack can be produced by incorrect
parameters, faulty driver card, short circuit or Encoder error
22.07.2014 38
8. Troubleshooting - Module error
It should begin with a visual check / inspection.
Visual inspection includes, controlling the LEDs on the TR101 boards and verification
of the power stack for broken parts.
Is there no possibility to reset the fault, can be performed an error analysis with the
DT20
By a faulty encoder signal, can be created an overcurrent, these fault triggers a
module error (overcurrent).
By a change of control type, from asynchronous with encoder to asynchronous
without encoder, can be find out whether the encoder is the cause of module failure,
or if the power stack is faulty.
Some drives have had the problem in past, that one of the two amplifiers - A44 / A45
does not work properly. To find out a faulty isolation amplifier, can be checked the
output signal at the controller. There is the possibility to exchange the amplifier, out of
a different drive. (If the error should still be present)

8. Troubleshooting – Encoder error
The encoder can be electrical or mechanical damaged.
For the electrical, is a fault monitoring function in the VFD controller or encoder
interface implemented.
In the past, there were at the Top Drives (Varco & MH PTD 500), many shutdowns
because of damaged encoder.
At the Varco TDS 11 is the proper installation and function of the tension pulley
important.
At the MH PTD is the encoder is often mechanically faulty (bearing damage / clutch).
This is creating high current of the drive, but there is no response at the motor - motor
does not rotate because the "real" value is missing from the encoder signal. It feels
like, the motor is blocked!!
It should be always made sure at the commissioning, that the encoder signal edges of
the square waves are sharp.
