Critical Line List

The document discusses criteria for identifying critical piping lines that require stress analysis according to ASME B31.3. It explains that weight, restraint, and expansion supports are required, and stress analysis ensures piping can flex without failure under pressures, temperatures, seismic events. While ASME B31.3 provides stress analysis requirements, the code criteria are not always practical to apply directly. Instead, parameters like temperature, size, equipment type, and number of anchors should be considered to specify critical lines, as demonstrated in a sample project specification. An upcoming workshop will apply these lessons to prepare a critical line list.

Critical Line list

By Ali Nouri
The code: asme b31.3
Supporting of piping
Based on Para. 321.1 : The design of support structures not covered by ASME B31.3
Code.
So, project specification (Pipe support Spec) shall cover supporting requirements:
Primarily, Piping system shall be supported to sustain its weight in different
conditions (Hydro static test, operation, …).
Those weight supports should be deigned in a appropriate span to prevent line
deflection.
Weight Support
Rigid Restraint support
• Also, Piping system shall be guided or anchored to prevent excessive vibration
and to protect piping and connected equipment from excessive loading,
expansion stress, seismic and wind.
ASME B31.3
Reasons for stress analysis based on ASME B31.3?
• Based on Para: 319.1.1 Basic Requirements: Piping systems shall have sufficient
flexibility to prevent thermal expansion or contraction or movements of piping
supports and terminals from causing
• (a) failure of piping or supports from overstress or fatigue
• (b) leakage at joints
• (c) detrimental stresses or distortion in piping and valves or in connected
equipment (e.g., pumps and turbines), resulting from excessive thrusts and
moments in the piping
ASME B31.3
What does the ASME B31.3 provide to handle stress analysis?
AME B31.3 specifies requirements and data for evaluation and limitation of stresses,
reactions, and movements associated with pressure, temperature changes, and other forces
Which lines should be stress analyzed?
Lets have a look at ASME 31.3 criteria:

Actually, In the real

piping layout, we do
not have a line with

no reducers.
How can we specify critical lines?
So, In this case, the code requirements could not help us to specify critical lines
that should be stress analyzed.
Lets think about parameters that make a line critical:
Weight
Temperature

So, the combination of Temperature, Size, and type of Equipment
shall be considered for specifying critical list.
In this regards, the project spec for piping stress is prepared.
