Enhancing Art Education for Children

Brittany Pozorski reflects on how her views of art and teaching have changed. She now sees the creative process as more important than the final product. She plans to incorporate art into her lessons whenever possible and create an encouraging environment for students to explore their creativity. She will ask open-ended questions to get students thinking critically and relating new ideas to prior knowledge. The most useful lesson she learned was the importance of incorporating art across different subjects, not just in art class, to make it a fun way for students to express themselves rather than an area for judgment. She wants to expand her knowledge of artistic development in young children to better support their learning.

Self critique and learning application paper

When I started this class, I put more emphasis on the finished art project and how it

looked than on the experience of creating art. As I have learned and grown, I now see that it is

the creative process that is important. All children need the chance to express themselves and

an encouraging environment to explore their creativity.

The first skill that I will use in my classroom is to always have a positive attitude towards

the arts and incorporate them into my lessons whenever possible. Students follow the teachers

lead when it comes to trying new things, so if I put the emphasis on trying and the experience

rather than how well as student can draw then I feel I will create an accepting environment.

Another skill I will use is creative inquiry with my students. Art based lessons should be about

being creative and not coping and example the teacher shows the students. Remembering that

the creative process is the most import part of art will help me be a better teacher. I will also

use inquiry questions with my students such as what do you see, why did you think of that,

what did you learn, and other questions to get them thinking and relating new knowledge with

prior knowledge. Asking open ended questions will help children explore and be creative.

The most useful thing I have learned is how important it is to incorporate arts into

different areas of learning. When I was in elementary school arts were only for art class and we

were graded on how our projects looked when we were done. This left me feeling like I was not

good at art projects. I have learned that it is not the finished project but the learning that is

important. This is something that I will stress with my students and hopefully make art fun. I

will also use the arts in other areas of learning. Because I had some negative experiences with

art, I have learned what not to do with my students. I want my students to enjoy the arts and

feel as though art is a way to express yourself, not an area for judgement.

Self critique and learning application paper

I would like to learn more about the stage of artistic development in young children.

This is an area that I don’t know a lot about but found what I have learned interesting. I want

to expand my knowledge of artistic development. I feel that the more I can learn on the

subject, the better teacher I will become. By learning about development, I will be able to

make sure my lessons are age appropriate and not too advanced for my students. I feel that

the more knowledge I acquire the better teach I will become.
