The design capabilities of midas nGen 7 Foundation include steel design, reinforced
concrete design, and basic member design/strength checks. For steel members, the program
offers the ability to conduct cross section calculations, which form the basis of the member
design strength. For reinforced concrete members, the program offers the ability to conduct
cross section and reinforcement calculations.
To conduct member design and strength checks, the analysis of the structure of design
interest must be linearized. Design parameters for the computations may include
force/moment results output from static or dynamic analysis, as well as the cross section
characteristics, material properties, and other member information that is input at the
creation of the model.
‘When creating the analysis model, design criteria for each member may be specified using,
the design variable input window. If the user does not specify values for certain design
variables, the program uses the default values.
Afier using the “Run Design” option, the member design results may be verified through
various options. The program offers the ability to run graphic post-process
results, and the outputs can be seen in tabular or list format as well.TABLE OF CONTENTS.

Design groups categorize members with the purpose of obtaining common computation
results. The following conditions are considered to auto-generate design groups, and the
groups may be manually modified by the user.
> Members of a group are of the same type (beam, column, brace, wall, slab).
» Members of a group have the same characteristics (section, thickness, material).
If the reinforcement has been calculated, the reinforced concrete members of a
group have the same reinforcement.

Boundary Condition of Ware House Structure
For the boundary condition of the Ware House structure, coefficient of
subgrade modulus of the rectangular foundation is calculated and applied as
surface spring support feature in midas nGen Civil. The value of the
coefficient of subgrade reaction is not a constant for a given soil. It depends
on several factors, such as length, L and width, B, of the foundation. Terzaghi
equation is used for the calculation of modulus of Elasticity reaction.Stee! & RC Design Code

1. Self-Weight
Apply Self-Weight using Self-Weight function.
2. Vertical Earth Pressure (EV)
‘The weight of fill on top of the culvert produces vertical earth pressure (EV).The
fill height is measured from the top surface of the top slab to the top of the
pavement or fills. The unit weight of the fill is 0.120 kcf The weight of earth fill
shall be increased for soil-structure interaction. The soilstructure interaction factor.3, Horizontal Earth Pressure (EH)
The lateral earth pressure (EH) on the Ware House is found using the equivalent
fluid method.
Max equivalent fluid unit weight = 0.060 kef
Min equivalent fluid unit weight = 0.030 kcf
At the top of the culvert, the lateral earth pressure is:
O00 00=0000-0-0
= 0.060 - 6 «1 = 0.360 kif
Q0000 = 0000-0 -o

need to consider load cases where the Ware House is full of water as well as
cases where the Ware House is empty. A simple hydrostatic distribution is used
for the water load: [) C10 = 0.00 kif

5. Live Load Surcharge (LS)
Live load surcharge should be applied where vehicular load is expected to act
on the surface of the backfill within a distance equal to one-half the wall height behind
the back face of the wall. The increase in horizontal pressure due to live load surcharge
may be estimated as:

Required area or reinforcement information is used as a guide to define the rebar
input, Rebar can be inputted either defining the number (Num) or spacing (CTC)
between the rebar for the plate beam. Following reinforcement arrangement is used

Shear Strength
Maximum design shear should be checked at the effective shear depth of
section, dy. Factored shear resistance Vr should not be taken less than factored
shear Vu at every locations for all load combination. Shear strength is checked at
the same positions of flexure design positions.
Boundary Conditions: Elastic Links
> — Boundary conditions generated by the wizard are Elastic links and Spring
supports.
> Vertical Stiffness (Local direction of links) is calculated using Modulus of
subgrade reaction x Effective area.
> Metal story industrial building in the elements of the structures support the roofs.
> IN common Ware House of an external structures requires fire resistance in all
Steel boundary conditions.
> Any structural members supporting such an external walll should also have fire
resistance; the supporting members can sometimes include the roof structure.
> Portal frames are a simple and very common type of framed (or skeleton)
structure.
> Steel portal frames, in particular, are a cost-effective structural system to support
building envelopes (such as warehouses and shopping complexes) requiring large
column-free spaces.Application of Dispersed Load

+ Steel full: Live load surcharge on top slab and superimposed surcharge load

Undersized and poorly placed Steel Bars can cause problems for water quality
and aquatic organisms. Poorly designed Steel Ware House can degrade water quality
via scour and erosion and also restrict aquatic organisms from being able to move
freely between upstream and downstream habitat. Fish are a common victim in the
loss of habitat due to poorly designed crossing structures. Steel Ware House that
offer adequate aquatic organism passage reduce impediments to movement of fish,
wildlife and other aquatic life that require instream passage.
These structures are less likely to fail in medium to large scale rain and snow
melt events. Poorly designed culverts are also more suitable to become jammed with
sediment and debris during medium to large scale rain events. If the Steel Ware
House cannot pass the water volume in the stream, the water may overflow over the
road embankment. This may cause s
icant erosion, washing out theSteel Ware
House. The embankment material that is washed away can clog other structures
downstream, causing them to fail as well. It can also damage crops and property.
Structural Design of Steel Ware House
Bolden, et al. (2016) stated that the Steel Ware House design begins when the
structure design unit receives the culvert hydraulic design report. This report shall be
used to contained the Steel Ware House length, design fill, and other items that lead
to the completed culvert plans.
Pencol Engineering Consultants (1983) defined box culverts are reinforced
concrete closed rigid frames which must support vertical earth and truck loads and
lateral earth pressure. They may be either single or multi-cell based on the hydraulic
requirements.
Garg (2007) reported that box Steel Ware House are typically designed
similar to bridges, and the new design concepts for bridges are based on the Load
and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) which were developed by the AASHTO. Box
Steel Ware House four sides are built monolithically and also provide haunch at
corners todecrease the water pressure effect. In this type of Steel Ware House there is no need
of extra foundation since bottom slab act as mat foundation.

Ware House Structural Elements
Ware House consist of top slab, bottom slab and two vertical side walls. Reinforced
steel rigid frame ware house are used for square or rectangular openings. The top of
the Ware House section can be at the road level or can be at a depth below road
level with a fill depending on site conditions.
Structural design cases
‘The design is carried out for Sm length of the Ware House and based on the
obtained dimensions from the hydraulic design. Mainly, the load cases for Ware
House design are: -
© Ware House empty, live load surcharge on top slab of box and superimposed
surcharge load on earth fill.
© Ware House inside full with water, live load surcharge on top slab and
