Chapter I
The Problem and It’s Background
Introduction
In times like these, we all know that the Covid-19 Virus is affecting a large number of
people. Many people have lost their employment as a result of this. Thousands of school-aged
children who will be confined at home for an unknown and unforeseeable period of time,
including those who are now studying on their own, are expected to become agitated and
restless. This, in turn, would have an impact on their mental health. As a result, it influenced
their academic performance at school as well as their physical health. Many students are now
undecided about whether or not to continue their studies.
We all learn that what we are experiencing right now teaches us more about
ourselves. Students nowadays spend a lot of time on social media, so we decided to create an
online platform group where you can help other students by posting school-related stuff, which
helps reduce their anxiety, and other students can interact with it. In this case, students will feel
that they are not alone in having these thoughts that others do as well. It is only applicable to
students who are having difficulty with their studies and want to improve their academic
performance. Simply clicking the link will take you to the group's online platform. As a result,
we cast all of students votes.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on how worldwide education is delivered.
Due to the pandemic, millions of students were affected by educational institution closures,
resulting in the largest online movement in educational history. Universities had to quickly
change to virtual and digital techniques as a result of the unexpected shift away from classrooms
in many parts of the world. Many people believe that after the pandemic, the adoption of online
distance learning will continue. A new hybrid educational paradigm is predicted to emerge, and
given the digital divide, new educational approaches may worsen inequality gaps. This is one of
the first empirical studies to look into the impact of a sudden shift from face-to-face to online
distance learning at one of the universities due to COVID-19 lockdown.

Background of the Study
Senior is typically the high point of a student's high school career. Seniors this year are
worried about being able to graduate. They're worried about being able to qualify and be fully
prepared for college admission. The COVID-19 pandemic led to numerous governments
deciding to close schools for several weeks in spring 2020. Results indicate a negative effect of
school closures on student achievement, specifically in younger students and students from
families with low socioeconomic status. Education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive
rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. The
transition to online learning has implications not only for teachers, who need to change their
courses but also for students, who need to adapt to the new learning environment. Educators and
parents taking notice and many are considering whether the shift to online education will lead to
lasting changes for students who move out of the classroom.
One of the most important consequences of the transition to online learning is its impact
on students' health and sleeping habits. Students must be organized, self-motivated, and have a
high level of time management to participate in an online program. Online learning methods can
be an effective alternative educational medium for mature and self-disciplined students but are
unsuitable for learning environments that depend on the learner. Students' commitment to time is
often misinterpreted as meaning that online courses require less time an effort than traditional
courses. This shows the effect of not being able to interact with other students and teachers in an
online school, which can result in serious negative effects.

Online learning can lead to students not developing the necessary communicative skills.
In addition, students must have high-speed internet access at home, which can lead to
complications if it is not available. Impacts include the lack of efficiency of technology, the
difficult for students to understand the concepts taught, and online learning causes isolation and
that causes the changes of academic performance of every senior high student

Theoretical Framework
Theory of Academic Performance
The theory of academic performance (ToP) was developed by Elger (2007). The theory
emphasizes six foundational concepts to form a framework that can be used to explain
performance as well as performance improvements. To perform is to produce valued results. A
performer can be an individual or a group of people engaging in a collaborative effort.
Developing performance is a journey, and level of performance describes location in the journey.
Current level of performance depends holistically on six components: context, level of
knowledge, levels of skills, level of identity, personal factors, and fixed factors. Three axioms
are proposed for effective performance improvements. These involve a performer’s mindset,
immersion in an enriching environment, and engagement in reflective practice.
The theory of performance is a challenge to educators: by improving our own
performance, we empower ourselves to help others learn and grow. As advocated by Harvard’s
Project Zero, performance is closely related to learning-for-understanding (Wiske, 1998). When
people learn and grow, they are empowered to create results that make a difference. Working and
learning together in ways that make the world better has been a primary goal of higher education
throughout the ages.

The COVID-19 pandemic, according to Sumitra Pokhrel and Roshan Chhetri
(2021), has caused the greatest disruption of education systems in human history, affecting
almost 1.6 billion students in over 200 nations. More than 94 percent of the world's student
population has been touched by school, institution, and other learning facility closures. This has
resulted in significant changes in every part of our life. Traditional educational techniques have
been considerably disrupted by social alienation and limited movement policies. The reopening
of schools once the restrictions have been lifted is another challenge, as many new standard
operating procedures have been implemented. Many scholars have shared their work on teaching
and learning in various ways in the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak. Face-to-face
instruction has been phased out at a number of schools, colleges, and universities. There is an
issue.

According to (Laura Guisti 2021), during the covid 19 lockdown studies, half of
the students reported difficulties with concentration and learning abilities. On March 11, 2020,
the World Health Organization declared the pandemic a public health emergency, closing all
schools, universities, and workplaces, locking down the entire country, and prohibiting people
from leaving.

Local Literature
According to Bonz Magsambol (2021) the effects of COVID-19 have been felt
all over the world since the beginning of 2020, where schools, malls and other non-essential
business are close. Philippines is one of the five countries in the world that have not started
physical classes since the pandemic began, they use online platforms to continue their schooling
and with that it affects the right to learn of more than 27 million Filipino students. As stated by
Bonz Magsambol (July 2020), the pandemic made the education difficult in financial and mental
problems which the families are struggling to fulfill their children’s needs for distance learning.
Without teachers explaining the lessons to students, the parents had to change their morning
routine so they can guide and motivate their children to answer their learning modules.
According to Chad De Guzman (2021) in the beginning of the surge of Covid 19
at March 2020 after the end of academic year, the Philippines stop face to face classes for the
protection of the students. According to UNESCO 24.9 million students are affected due to
pandemic. In October 2020 the department of education have solution to continue the education
while at home, online platforms, educational tv and radio and printed modules are the new way
of learning but it faces a lot of problem like don't have enough resources of students and
teachers. In March 2021 found that 99% of public-school students got passing marks but the
surveys show over 86% they learned less.

Anshu Narad (2016) stated that the academic performance is the main goal in
education that students must achieve in a specific period of time. It is affected by the
environment that the students have. He concluded that the academic performance of the students
determines the success and failure of the institution they’re in.
As reported by Heather Kauffman (2015), students evaluate online courses differently
than traditional classes. Negative attitudes can result in poor academic performance, such as a
lack of interest and effort. This review will look at a variety of factors that affect adult learners'
performance and satisfaction in online learning environments, including learning outcomes,
instructional design, and learner characteristics, as well as research recommendations and
implications for administrators, instructors, course designers, and students. Online learning may
not be the ideal solution for some students. Identifying key characteristics that lead to online
success versus failure could aid in predicting learning outcomes and preventing students from
enrolling in online courses if they are not suited to this type of learning environment.
Furthermore, knowing these learning traits may assist you in making better decisions.

Local Studies
According to ( Ragpala, 2021) Covid 19 affected many countries especially the
Philippines and that causes the type of learning to change which affects the academic
performances of students. There are factors that affecting the academic performance of the
students, such as family, internet connection, time, health condition, social media, etc.
In agreement with Jessie S. Barrot et al. (2021), stated that the school system has just
been destroyed by an unexpected health catastrophe that has shook its foundation. Given the
current situation, gaining a more complete understanding of students' online learning experiences
during the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial. Despite the fact that countless studies have been
conducted on the subject, little is known about the challenges students confront and the
techniques they employ to overcome them. The findings, which were based on a mixed-
methods approach, showed that online learning challenges among students differed in type and
intensity. Their most pressing concern was their home learning environment, while technical
knowledge and expertise was their least pressing concern.

The majority of respondents from Meridian Educational Institution's Senior High School
Department responded that some of them are undecided and confused about the system of taking
online classes at home, particularly in terms of the Covid19-Virus, which has caused all of us to
be quarantined since March 2020. The students who said yes to the contingency questions said
they were mentally and physically unprepared to take online classes at home, and that it was still
preferable to go to school physically. Also, some claim to be unmotivated and have begun
procrastinating. Others, on the other hand, claim that there are several distractions, such as
family matters, house chores, and even internet issues. Furthermore, this causes students to be
less focused on their lessons at home and put less effort into studying, which can affect their
academic performance and achievement.
