HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING MATERIAL (CBLM)
Welcome to the competency-based learning material for the module: “Installing
Wiring devices of floor and wall mounted outlets, lighting fixture/switches
and Auxiliary Outlets.” This module contains training materials and activities for
you to accomplish.
The unit of competency “Install wiring devices of floor and wall mounted
Outlets, lighting fixtures/switches and auxiliary outlets.” contains the
knowledge, skills and attitudes required for Electrical Installation and
maintenance NC II.
You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete
each learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome, there are
instructional sheets (information sheets, operation sheets, job sheets, task
sheets) for further reading to help you better understands the required activities.
Follow the activities at your own pace and answer the self-check at the end of each
learning outcome. If you have questions, please feel free to ask for the assistance
of your trainer/facilitator.
This module was prepared to help you achieve the required competency: Lay tiles
on plain and curved surfaces for walls and other. This will be the source of
information for you to acquire the knowledge and skills in this particular module
with minimum supervision or help from your trainer. With the aid of this material,
you will acquire the competency independently and at your own pace.
Remember to:
Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section. Do
what is asked in the Instructional sheet (Task sheet, Operation sheet, and Job
sheet) and complete the Self-check. Suggested references are included to
supplement the materials provided in this module.
Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He/ she are
there to support you and show you the correct way to do things. Ask for help. You
will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice on the job. Make
sure you practice your new skills during regular work shifts. This way, you will
improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.
Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your own progress.
When you feel confident that you have had sufficient practice, ask your trainer to
evaluate you. The result of your assessment/evaluation will be recorded in the
Achievement chart and Progress chart.
You need to be competent in this module before you can move to the next
competency. A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to you after passing
the Institutional Competency Evaluation.

Prepare appropriate tools and materials needed in electrical
Installation.
Types of lighting fixtures
1. Flood light - lighting unit for projecting a broad beam of
light.
2. Spot light - a powerful light focused so as to illuminate a
small area, usually mounted so that it can be directed at will.
3. High-pressure sodium lamp– is an electric discharge lamp
in which the radiation is produced by an excitation of sodium
vapor in which the partial pressure of the vapor during
operation is of the order of 104 N/m2.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.1-2
Information Sheet # 1.1-2
Electrical Tools & PPE
Learning Objective:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. Identify Electrical tools and PPE.
These are the Electrical tools and PPE needed in lighting fixtures
installation.
Wire strippers- are used to cut the insulation of the wire. They are
equipped with different sized cutting teeth for various sized wires. They
also have a cutoff portion in order to cut the wire.
Diagonal cutting pliers- sometimes called side snips, are used to cut wire.
They are specially designed with a cutting edge that goes down to the tip
of the pliers. The advantage being that you can get into tight areas to trim

wires. There are some that are equipped with live wire detection

capabilities.

Lineman’s pliers- are the do-it-all pliers. They cut, twist wires together,
and grip wires for pulling. They have a squared off end that is great for
twisting wires together, a center cutting blade for cutting wire, and a grip
area between the handles to pull wire.
Spirit level- is used to make sure your work is level and plumb. A great
installation starts with straight switch and outlet covers.
Utility knife- is needed to cut the insulation off of Romex wiring. You
will also need to open boxes when doing installation and this tool will
come in handy.
Phillips screwdriver- has four blades used to install Phillips-head screws.
The tip looks like a plus sign.
Flat screwdriver- is used for straight slot screws. You will likely need
more than one size for your project. If you have to choose just one, pick a
medium blade. It will suit most projects.
Hard hat- is a type of helmet predominantly used in workplace
environments, such as construction sites, to protect the head from injury
by falling objects, impact with other objects, debris, bad weather and
electric shock. Inside the helmet is a suspension that spreads the helmet's
weight over the top of the head. It also provides a space of approximately
30 mm (1.2 inch) between the helmet's shell and the wearer's head so that
if an object strikes the shell, the impact is less likely to be transmitted
directly to the skull. Sometimes the helmet shell has a midline
reinforcement ridge, which strengthens it against impact.
Rubber electrical gloves- are used to protect workers against electrical
shock while working around energized systems.
