WRITING A MINI-RESEARCH
The Meaning of Research
According to Sims (1987), Research is “a process of scientific inquiry that leads to
the discovery, development or production of new knowledge. It is something that either
had not been known before or had not been applied in that particular context before.”
From the book of Calmorin (1994), Research was defined as “a scientific investigation of
phenomena which includes the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of
facts, that link man’s speculation with reality.”
Research According to Type
Quantitative research is any data-gathering technique that generates numerical data.
Qualitative research was defined as any data-gathering technique that generated
narrative data rather than numerical data.
Research According to Type
Basic Research. This research is also called fundamental or pure research. It aims to
discover the basic truths or principles.
Applied Research aims to improve product or a process by testing theoretical concepts
in actual problem situation.
Action Research is a decision-oriented research where it involves the application of the
steps of scientific method in response to an immediate need for improvement.

The Research Process
Research Problem is an inquiry which asks to what degree or how two or more
phenomena are related, usually started in question form. To state a good problem, five
qualities must be considered: (1) interesting, (2) new, (3) add new knowledge, (4)
feasible and (5) no one has a prior claim to it.
Research Objectives must be specific and achievable. It intends to answer specific
questions of interest. General objective provides an overall description of the general
intention of the research activity while specific objective spells-out the details of general
objectives. Objectives must be presented according to priority.
Writing the Title of the Study
The title draws, in summary form, the content of the entire investigation. It serves
as a frame of reference for the whole study. It enables the researcher to claim the title as
his own.
To come up with a good title, there are points to consider. a) The title must be
clear and specific. b) The main concept should be included in the title. c) The variable
being investigated should be written as part of the title. d) Set the maximum number of

words into 20, function words are not include in the counting. e) Drop the phrase such as
“A Study of”, “An investigation of”, “An Inquiry of”, “A Comparison of”.
The Introductory Chapter
In developing your introductory chapter, you briefly discuss the historical
developments of events regarding the specific topic you are interested in. In this section,
you should be able to argue that your topic has certain level of significance that warrants
its study. Describe your basic assumptions that led you to study the topic Finally, briefly
describe how you intend to go about conducting the study. Description should give
the reader an idea of how you intend to pursue the study.
The Importance of the Study
Importance of the study is a set of statements about the possible contributions of
the study. In this section, you must be able to describe the value of specific applications
of knowledge to be gained and the potential importance of these applications.
Delimiting the Study
In this section, you must identify the boundaries of your study. You must describe
the population, its size, the locale and other factors that needs further identification.
Review of Related Literature
Review of literature is a systematic examination of general information, data,
research studies and theories which have been discovered over the years to be related
to the variables of interest and the relationships among them (Sproull, 1995).
To make your literature easier, you may consider the following (Sproull, 1995;
Librero, 1993).
1. Examine your preliminary research questions or hypotheses.
2. Determine the most appropriate sources of the desired information. Examples of
sources for research are statistical data, census data, business documents,
government document, periodicals, journal, dissertation and unpublished

manuscripts. Refer or use the original material and avoid using secondary
materials.
3. Search the web carefully. The most credible sites belong to universities (.edu), the
government (.gov), and well-known organizations (.org).
4. Determine the location of information. Examples of location of source useful in
research are public libraries, university library, government agencies, and your
own organization.
Methodology
Knowing whether you used qualitative or quantitative methods is an important
part of understanding your study. You can list all the ways you collected data, including
surveys, experiments, or field research.
Data Collection Methods
Knowing whether you used qualitative or quantitative methods is an important
part of understanding your study. You can list all the ways you collected data, including
surveys, experiments, or field research.
Data collection is a means by which information about variable is collected. There
are four types of data collection methods.
1. Interviewing Method. In this method, an interviewer questions people to elicit
reports of their opinions, attitudes, values, beliefs or behaviors.
2. Instrument Administration. This is a data collection method in which Ss respond to
questionnaire, tasks, tests, scales or other devices used to measure variables.
3. Observation. This is a data collection method in which a trained person observes
Ss or phenomena and records information about the characteristics of the
phenomena. Sometimes Ss are recorded on film, video or audiotape.
4. Examination of Documents, Materials or Artifacts. In this method, a trained person
examines and records characteristics of phenomena which already exist.

The Research Instruments
Questionnaire. It is a set of questions arranged in sequence and designed to be
self-administered. The characteristics of a good questionnaire are as follows:
a.) Only long enough to get essential data.b.) Attractive, neat and clean. c.) Directions
are clear and complete. d.) Questions should be objective. e.) Questions must be
presented in good psychological order.
Results / Discussion
1. State your answer to your research question.
2. State how and elaborate on how, explain how, illustrate how each of the sources you
previously reviewed help you answer your research question.
3. State what questions about your topic you still have that your sources may not have
answered.
Conclusions
1. State the conclusions regarding your topic you have reached from having surveyed,
interpreted, evaluated the literature.
2. Indicate how each of the sources have contributed to your conclusions (and clearly,
accurately, correctly document those sources within your text).
3. State the implications of your conclusions.
4. State what might be the possible consequences of your conclusions.
5. State the social significance these implications and consequences might have.
Documentation
1.On a separate page, include a section labeled References which provides the full
publication information for all the sources you used in your paper.
2.You should have a minimum of three (3) sources for your paper. Not meeting this
minimum requirement will lead to a lower evaluation of your paper for each missing
source.
4.Use APA format for documenting your sources.
