What Is It
RELATIONSHIPS OF THE DIFFERENT DANCE FORMS/GENRES

A dance style, or a dance genre, is simply a certain type of dance.

Different kinds of dance styles include ballet, modern dance, hip-hop, and diverse folk
dances from around the world, such as flamenco, bhangra and samba.

Although there are hundreds of dance styles, we place them into the following
categories: ballet, modern and contemporary dance, hip-hop and Latin, and ballroom
dance. These large hierarchical dance genres can further be divided into sub-
categories.

While it is possible to find ballet classes in most cities, other dance forms are
less widespread just like folk dance. Depending on where you live, you are likely to
have a harder time finding dance classes and dance shows that feature Spanish
flamenco, Japanese butoh, and Hungarian folk dance. Some of these traditional
dances have roots that date back centuries.

Folk Dance
- It is usually handed down from generation to generation and follows a fixed
and basic movement patterns based from a certain culture and tradition.

Ballroom/Social Dance
- Goes back to the medieval folk dancing.
- It is a partnership dance where couples use step-patterns and move
rhythmically expressing the characteristics of the music.

Ballet Dance
- It is the highest form of dance
- It is artistic dance like no other, which can be used to express different emotion
and stories
- It is a dance that follows a set of standards.

Contemporary Dance
- Is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres
including modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet.
- The movements used in this dance are the distorted forms of ballet.

Modern Dance
- The pioneers of modern dance disregard ballet’s strict movement vocabulary,
the particular limited sets of movements that were considered proper to ballet.

Popular Dance
- Open to personal expression like in contemporary and/or modern, artists were
free to interpret the dance in any way they could.

4
To further understand the relationship of the different genres, let’s take a look at
the following explanations:

Folk dance and Ballet dance

- The basic movements used in folk dancing comes from ballet dance.
- They are both related to each other because their roots come from the old,
traditional dances of a group of people in a certain place that developed and
became standardized.

Folk dance and Ballroom Dance

- The two dances are both partner dance. Some dance patterns and costumes
are also the same. Most of the ballroom dances are the folk dances of the
different countries like in Cuba (cha-cha-cha), Austria (waltz).

Ballet dance and Contemporary dance

- The movements used in contemporary dance are the distorted forms or figures
of ballet dance. Both dances use slow or fast music.

Popular dance and Modern dance

- Both are dance styles which are trendy or used at the present times.

Ballet dance and Modern dance

- Ballet styles and standards are the basis of the fundamental techniques in
modern dance. Ballet masters deviated from the standards of ballet and created
a more free style of dance from ballet.

Popular dance and Ballroom dance

- Ballroom dance can be integrated into popular dances and pop music.
Movements can also be used as ornaments of the ballroom dance.
