SUBJECT: Common Separator Plate

EQUIPMENT AFFIXTFD: MT(B) 640,643,644,647,65ODR, 653DR

A substantial number of production and service separator plates have been used in the past and are currently used
in MT 600 Series transmissions.

Three service separator plates are released having holes and slots common to the subject MT 600 Series
transmissions. Adding the required holes to these common separator plates will provide the equivalent of the
replaced production or service separator plate. This arrangement permits reducing separator plate inventories
while still maintaining complete servicing capabilities.

NOTE: When modifying a transmission so that it will have features other than it was originally designed with, it
must be remembered that merely adding the required holes to the common separator plate may not provide a
specific feature unless the necessary corresponding transmission modifications have also been completed.

Refer to the MT, MTB 644,647,654CR Parts Catalog, SA 1551, or MT 640,643,650,653 Parts Catalog,
SA 13 16, to determine which Common Separator Plate Kit to use.

The reverse priority check baI1 and corresponding hole (#112) in the separator have been deleted on units
incorporating the wide gear charging pump. New transmission assembly numbers were not created to reflect this
deletion; however, the serial number break points listed in Table 1 can be used to determine if the early style plate
(with hole 112) or current style plate (without hole 112) is in the transmission.

It is acceptable to eliminate hole 112 and delete the check ball in units prior to these serial numbers if the
transmission has a wide gear charging pump A common sclxarator plate kit will be required to eliminate hole
112. The transmission assembly number can be used to determine if the transmission has a wide gear charging
Pump.

Production Plates Incoruoratitw No Reverse Trim:

For MT 600 Series transmissions built prior to the serial numbers listed in Table 2, the production plate number on
the Assembly Number/Production Scp‘arator Plate Table on pages 4 through 8 may be different than the original
plate part number. This is due to the addition of the no reverse trim feature in some of the assembly numbers.

Transmissions with Reduced (29 psi) Modulation Calibrations

(Reduced Modulation Calibrations Were Formerly Called Smooth Shift.)

READ THE FOLI,OWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. REMEMBER CLEANLINESS IS IMPORTANT.

This kit contains a common separator plate, P/N 23016450, and template, P/N 23046467. Appropriate holes must be
drilled in the separator plate to correspond with the features incorporated on the transmission on which it is to be installed.

1. Securely fasten template, 23046467, to separator plate, 23016450, making sure template is centered on separator
plate.

2. Drill the appropriate holes in the separator plate by referring to Chart 242- 1.

3. Identify the hole pattern provided by stamping or etching the last four digits of the production separator plate part
number on the separator plate in the rectangular area outlined by the template. NOTE: This identification
procedure differs from the previously used system described in Instruction Sheet ##229.

EXAMPLE;

MT 644 Series, reduced modulation, modulated lockup transmission with production separator plate,
P/N 23013409, used in an application leaturin? a split shaft PTO pump incoroe shift ass& (high range
lockup). This modilication is described in SIL 9-TR-87, Rev. A.

a. Find the production separator plate listed on Chart 242- 1.

P/N 23013409 is found next to Item 11.

b. Drill, enlarge, and/or omit the holes dictated for Item 11 under the “Add or Enlarge 1-101~s” column, being
sure to observe the footnotes registered above some of the numbers. The footnotes are defined at the bottom
of Chart 242- 1. l:ind the appropriate hole locations and sizes by referring to the template and Chart 242-2.

Holes 42 and 162 - see Footnote@: This transmission does not use the snecld *<1 fixed rw shift kit

appropriate sizes shown on Chart 242-2.

c. Stamp “3409” in the rectangular area outlined by the template (the last four digits of production separator
plate P/N 23043409).

4. Ball seats (see below) required on some MT 653 and 2nd range start models can be formed by fabricating a steel
backing plate, approximately 2 x 2 inches (50 x 50 mm), with a matching 0.187 (3/16) inch, (4.75 mm) hole. This
will permit the steel ball outer diameter to project through the separator plate, producing a satisfactory sealing
seat. Place a 0.3125 inch (7.938 mm) diameter ti ball at the drilled 0.187 inch (4.75 mm) hole (valve body
mating side) and strike with a hammer to create a sealing seat.

Holes 42, 161 and 162 - see Footnote @ : This transmission does not use the
special fixed range shift kit described in SIL 4-TR-84. Therefore, these holes
shotild be drilled to the appropriate sizes shown on Chart 243-2.

Holes 106, 154 and 155 - see Footnote @ : This transmission is not being
modified for high range lockup for use in a split shaft PTO application such as
a fire truck pumper. Therefore, as the footnote indicates, these holes should
be drilled to the appropriate sizes shown on Chart 243-2. For more informa-
tion about the high range lockup modification, refer to SIL 9-TR-87, Rev. A.

Holes 23, 29, 123, 163 and 164 - Since no footnotes apply, these holes should
be drilled to the appropriate sizes shown on Chart 243-2.

c. Stamp “3813” in the rectangular area outlined by the template (the last four
digits of production separator plate P/N 23043813).

4. Ball seats (see below) required on some MT 653 model transmissions can be
formed by fabricating a steel backing plate, approximately 2 x 2 inches (50 x 50
mm), with a matching 0.187 (3/16) inch (4.75 mm) hole. This will permit the steel
ball outer diameter to project through the separator plate, producing a satisfac-
tory sealing seat. Place a 0.3125 inch (7.938 mm) diameter steel ball at the
drilled 0.187 inch (4.75 mm) hole (valve body mating side) and strike with a
hammer to create a sealing seat.

READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. REMEMBER CLEANLINESS IS

IMP0 RTANT.

This kit contains common separator plate, P/N 6883189 and template, P/N 23011254.
Appropriate holes must be drilled in the separator plate to correspond with the features
incorporated on the transmissions on which it is to be installed.

1. Securely fasten template, 23011254, to separator plate, 6883189.

2. Drill the appropriate holes in the separator plate by referring to the chart
(Figure 1). It is necessary to identify the part number of the main pressure
regulator valve spring in selecting the correct hole pattern.

MT 640 transmissions S/N 47019 and prior incorporate main pressure regulator
valve spring, 6834531. MT 640 transmissions S/N 47020 and later incorporate
main pressure regulator valve spring, 6880552.

WI’ 650 transmissions S/N 47284 and prior incorporate main pressure regulator
valve spring, 6834531; MT 650 transmissions S/N 47285 and later incorporate main
pressure regulator valve spring, 6880552.

If doubt exists regarding which main pressure regulator valve spring is installed,
as might occur on a rebuilt unit, it is necessary to visually identify the spring
located on the rear face of the front support. Springs may be identified by
comparing them with the following chart:

An alternate method exists, if the unit is operational, as follows:

a. Apply the vehicle parking brake.

b. Remove the main pressure tap plug, located on the left side of the
transmission directly behind the selector valve shaft and attach a 0-300 psi
(0-2000 kPa) oil pressure gauge (1/8” - 27 NPTF threads). Provide enough hose
length to permit placing the gauge in the vehicle cab.

c. Start the engine and select REVERSE. Operate the engine at 1200 WIL
Determine the main pressure regulator valve spring installed by comparing the
observed main pressure with the following table:

3. Identify the hole pattern provided by stamping or etching the last four digits on
the separator plate in the rectangular area outlined by the template.

EXAMPLE:

NIT 650 Series valve body assembly having an external tube (forward regulator
tube), main pressure regulator valve spring, P/N 6834531, without forward dump
valve. Transmission does not incorporate modulated lockup, but does have second
range hold.

Chart 103-1 dictates that Item 15 must be accomplished. Locate holes numbered
25, 23 and 103 on the template and drill the separator plate. Stamp ‘WW’ in tk
rectangular area outlined by the template.
