INSTRUMENT
Instrument Description
Kelly Curved and Straight
Used for clamping large blood vessels or
manipulating heavy tissue.
Allis
Used to firmly grasping dense tissue during
surgery.
Babcock
Non-perforating forceps used to grasp delicate
tissue.
Tissue forceps with out teeth
Non-toothed forceps used for fine handling of
tissue and traction during dissection.
Towel Clips
To hold tissues, towels, and drapes.
Needle Holder They are used in wound closure, ligation,
anastomosis and other surgical procedures which
require suturing. The needle is usually held in
position by a clamp mechanism, which allows the
operator to manipulate the needle through
various tissues.
Blade Holder
The blade holder is mounted or integrated into
the doctor or roll cleaning structure. Its main
purpose is to hold the blade in place.
Mayo Scissors Mayo scissors are used to cut connective tissues,
fascia and sutures, primarily
Metzembaum Scissors
Metzenbaum scissors or “Metz” are used for fine
dissection and cutting.
Iris Scissors
Used for fine dissection and cutting fine suture.
Originally for ophthalmic procedures, but now
serves multipurpose role.
Potts Scissor
Fine scissors used for creating incisions in blood
vessels.
Mixter Forceps
Mixter Forceps are ratcheted, finger ring forceps
commonly used for working in obscured surgical
sites. They are most frequently used for
clamping, dissection, or grasping tissue.
Ochsner Forceps Straight
Clamping off blood vessels to avoid bleeding
during procedures such as orthopedic surgery
Ochsner Forceps Curved
Clamping off blood vessels to avoid bleeding
during procedures such as orthopedic surgery
Needle and Suture or ATR (atraumatic)
Helps in holding body tissues together after a
surgery or an injury
Gauze Pad
To guard and cushion a wound, to absorb blood
or other fluids, to apply ointments, or to rub
cleansing fluids, such as rubbing alcohol or
iodine, onto a wound or site of incision.
Visceral Pack
Visceral packing of posttraumatic abdominal
wounds circumvents expected complications of
intraperitoneal hypertension and enhances the
chance for survival.
Adson’s Forceps or Tissue Forceps with teeth
Used on tissues that require a firm grip such as
fascia, skin or the abdominal wall.
Deaver Retractor
Used to hold back the abdominal wall
Army Navy Retractor Used to gain exposure of skin layers.
Richardson Retractor
Used to hold back deep tissue structures. Also
called “Rich.”
Yankauer Suction Tube
Used primarily for surface suction and some
intra-abdominal suction.
Ovum Forceps
Used to grasp, hold, manipulate and remove
tissue from inside the uterus including the ovum
and placenta.
Electrosurgery
Instrument that cuts or cauterizes tissue via an
alternating electrical current.
Peanut
Used to clean and separate interlaced tissues.
Surgical Disposable Stapler Creates a linear staple line; no cutting function.
Used in ligation and anastomosis. May be curved.
