AIM: To plot a graph between current and frequency in series and
parallel LCR circuit and to find the resonant frequency, quality factor
and bandwidth.
Learning Objective:
1. To Plot a graph between Current and Frequency
in series and parallel circuit
2. To find the resonant frequency, Quality factor, and
Band Width of the designed series LCR circuit.
Apparatus Required:
1. AC power source,
2. Capacitor,
3. Inductor,
4. Resistor,
5. Ammeter,
6. connection wire etc.
For Series LCR Circuit:
Resonance: Under certain conditions, the voltage and current are in
phase, even though the circuit consists of L , C and R and the circuit
behaves as a pure resistor.
Single frequency known as resonant frequency.
At Resonance: Capacitive reactance( Xc = 1/ωC) and the Inductive
Reactance( XL = ωL) are equal and opposite in direction.
For Series LCR Circuit:
For Series LCR Circuit:
To compare sharpness of
resonance, a band of
frequencies is chosen at which
the current falls to 0.707 times
(half power points) of its
maximum value.
The frequency difference (f2 – f1)
between the half power points is
called the bandwidth.
For Parallel LCR Circuit:
Rejector circuit: It rejects the current or allows minimum current to
flow through it, at a particular (anti- resonant ) frequency and it allows
more current at all other frequencies. So the circuit is not selective.

Calculation (LCR Series circuit)
Quality Factor (For R1)
Maximum value of current at resonance Io corresponding frequency fo
At 0.707 Io draw line parallel to x axis (cut the graph @ 2point)
Corresponding value of frequency
Below fo, f1 = ------ Hz
Above fo, f2 = ------ Hz
Band width β = f2 - f1 = ------ Hz
Quality factor Q= 2πfo/ (f2 - f1)
Calculated value of Q from inductance L = Lω/R = 2πf L / R
Calculated value of Q from Capacitance C = 1/ωCR = 1 / 2πf CR
