Overview of the Aravali Mountain Range

The Aravalli Range runs approximately 670 km through northern and western India, protecting the fertile plains to the east from the sandy desert to the west. It has an elevation of up to 1,722 meters and its highest peak is Guru Shikhar. The range plays an important role by acting as a barrier between the plains and desert, checking the spread of the Thar Desert. It also impacts the climate, provides forest cover, and functions as a groundwater recharge zone. However, the Aravallis face threats such as illegal mining, construction, deforestation, and depleting groundwater that endanger its crucial ecological functions.

Aravali Ranges

Intro

The Aravalli Range is a mountain range in Northern-Western
India, running approximately 670 km in a south-west direction, starting near
Delhi, passing through Southern Haryana and Rajasthan, and
ending in Gujarat. The highest peak is Guru Shikhar at 1,722
metres.

Elevation: 1,722 m

Highest point: Guru Shikhar

Country: India

Passes: Haldighati

Significance:-

The Aravallis act as a barrier between the fertile

The Aravallis act as a barrier between the fertile
plains in the east and the sandy desert in the west. Historically, it is said that
the Aravalli range checked the spread of the Thar desert towards the Indo-Gangetic
plains, serving as a catchment of rivers and plains.

Aravallis have an impact upon the climate of northwest
India and beyond. During monsoons, it provides barrier and monsoon clouds move
eastwards towards Shimla and Nainital, thus helping nurture the sub-Himalayan
rivers and feeding the north Indian plains. In the winter months, it protects the
fertile alluvial river valleys from the cold westerly winds from Central Asia.

For Haryana, having the lowest forest cover at around
3.59% of the total forest cover in India, the Aravalli range is the only saving
grace, providing the major portion of its forest cover.

Aravallis also function as a groundwater recharge zone
for the regions around that absorb rainwater and revive the groundwater level.

This range is considered the “lungs” for the world’s most
polluted air of Delhi–National Capital Region (NCR)

Difficulties faced by Aravalli

For way too long, the Aravallis have faced issues ranging
from illegal mining activities and construction to
deforestation and depleting groundwater recharge zones
– not to mention incidents of leopards being lynched by humans.
