Part B (19 marks)
Read the following passage and answer the questions below.
1 “Do it again Dan” – A Profile of Daniel Radcliffe
There are many successful movie stars, but not all of them are like my idol Daniel Radcliffe who
translates his theatrical success into benevolent actions of helping others.
[A]
5 Born on 23 July 1989 in London, Daniel’s first professional acting experience was in the TV
series David Copperfield based on the story by Charles Dickens when he was 10 – prior to this,
he played a monkey in a school play two years before. Originally, Daniel’s parents didn’t think it
was a good idea for him to be an actor. However, David Copperfield was produced by their close
friend Kate Harwood, so in the end they changed their mind.
10 [B]
So how did he end up appearing in the Harry Potter series? Chris Columbus, the producer of
Harry Potter, saw a video of Daniel in David Copperfield, and he liked Daniel’s so much that he
asked him to appear in the first Harry Potter film. His debut in the Harry Potter series (well, as
Harry Potter of course) was a success and has helped him earn US$100,000 – a pretty handsome
15 profit for a 12-year-old. His real fortune came one year later in Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets, when he earned 30 times of what he earned in the first film. That’s a huge amount!
[C]
Although Daniel Radcliffe has wanted to be an actor since he was five, he’s not sure he wants to
be an actor all his life. ‘I enjoy acting,’ he says. ‘However, I would also like to try writing and
20 producing films in the future’. His dream eventually came true at the age of thirty: he is now one
of the executive producers of TV series Miracle Workers.
[D]
Alongside his success in his acting career, Daniel is actively supporting different charities. He is
particularly involved in charities helping children, such as UNICEF, Save the Children, and Kids
25 Wish Network. He is a real-life Harry Potter – a hero who saves the world from the evil!
If he could choose again, I am sure he would do the same. Do you think so too? Tell me what
you think below.
1. Complete the timeline in the Answer Sheet. (6 marks)
2. Were Daniel Radcliffe’s parents supportive of his acting career at first? What made them change
their mind? (2 marks)
3. Why does the writer describe Daniel Radcliffe as a ‘real-life Harry Potter’ (line 25)? Provide
evidence from the passage to support your answer. * (3 marks)
