A 500 word English Essay about “Why I am Interested in Medicine and How

I Will Use It to Provide Good Health Care for the People of Indonesia in the

Future.”

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Malachy Rampangilei and I would like to express my interest in joining the
Faculty of Medicine offered by Pelita Harapan University. I was born in Canberra Australia in
2001 and I moved to New York in 2003 following my father's tour of duty in the United Nations
as the Military Advisor to the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN.
Since then, I lived in the US until I graduated from high school. I graduated from Culver Military
Academy located in Indiana, USA on June 3, 2019

and have taken a gap year in order to take the opportunity to travel and broaden my horizons.

Ever since my youth, I have always enjoyed helping others and putting smiles on their
faces, making it my goal in life to help people. To that end, my goal is to work in the Medical
Field and contribute to healing and ensuring the health of as many people as I can. I became
more aware of the important need for workers in the medical field, especially in the case of
humanitarian assistance when my father was the head of BNPB (Indonesian Disaster
Management Authority) and gave a lecture at my school for my Senior Service Project. From
this presentation, I learned that Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone countries, with
millions of people living in vulnerable areas. So it’s obvious that when natural disasters strike, it
will cause many injuries and casualties which requires medical attention.

I have a firm belief that Pelita Harapan University is the best place for me to start my
education in the medical field. The University provides students to not only study
professionalism but to also learn stewardship and what it means to become a good citizen and a
compassionate agent of change. Most importantly, Pelita Harapan provides students the chance
to learn how to become a leader that is professional and competent. I believe that the additional
focus on the Fundamentals of Christianity will guide me to become a Health Worker with proper
moral conduct.

My High School, Culver Military Academy, is a school that is focused on teaching

students leadership, discipline, and proper conduct. One of their mottos is “A Cadet does not lie,
cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those that do”. The punishment for disobeying this can range from a
3-hour detention during the weekend to expulsion. This has taught me that deceiving others has
no value than being truthful. The leadership training I have received has taught me to not only
guide a team but to also communicate and follow orders to the best of my abilities. Every day,
Cadets are to have their rooms ready for inspection by a certain time. This includes tidiness and
cleanliness. I believe that these traits are essential to becoming a Doctor as training to become a
Doctor requires discipline, being calm under pressure, and a strong mentality.

I consider myself a diligent and motivated student, regardless of what I am studying.

During my Junior and Senior year, I had chosen Chinese for my second language. I struggled
with that course as not only did I have a late start compared to other students, but I also had to
memorize characters and different grammar. Regardless of the obstacles, I persevered and
continued to study. I made many study sets on Quizlet and kept studying until I understood and
memorized the characters. Often I would study until midnight and wake up very early to
continue so I would retain and understand what I needed to learn. Although my grade could have
been better, I put in no less than 110% and came out with a better understanding, appreciation,
and better study habits.

Studying Medicine at Pelita Harapan University is an opportunity that I would take

seriously, and devote myself to. It is my desire to become an excellent Doctor who can help
ensure the health and bring smiles to many people. Considering my traits as both a student and a
learner, I believe that I would be a great fit for the Faculty of Medicine. I hope I am given a
chance to meet and surpass your expectations.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Sincerely,
Malachy Rampangilei
