ACTIVITY 1
“THE LORAX” by Dr. Seuss
In this animated story from the 1970’s, Dr. Seuss uses fictional characters called the
“Oncelers” and the “Lorax” to portray different sides of the environmental situation of
that time. A little boy is the main character and he is told the story as a flashback.
You will work with a partner for this activity. One of you will take the Onceler
position and the other will be the Lorax. I would like you both to come up
with an argument as to why your side of the issue is the correct one. You will
need to list as many arguments as you can to defend your position. Try to use
any information that you have learned about the history of the environmental
movement and the current state of the environment today.
My side would be Lorax and my partner ( Jonh Carlos Paler) taking the
side of Onceler.
We relied to the natural environment for food, water, and shelter. Trees can
provide both food and shelter and even trees can improve water quality by
slowing rain as it falls to the Earth, and helping it soak into the soil. Also tress
serve as natural sponges, collecting and filtering rainfall and releasing it
slowly into streams and rivers. By cutting tress irresponsibly can cost climate
change, desertification, soil erosion and flooding
Trees contribute to our environment by providing oxygen, fresh air, climate
amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife
And yet Onceler still cutting stress one by one greedily just thinking only how
to produce more thneeds without thinking what will happen to the future.
Greed has possessed human completely to a point where, they can’t make any
decisions, without the factor of how it will benefit and destroy them
Questions:
1. Is the story really relevant today? Why or why not?
o Yes. The story is very visible today. As human activities lead the trees
to continue decreasing around the world. The environment needs a
special care and attention also. For enable the future generation can
still benefit and just like the movie, can still see trees, we need to do
something today.
2. Do you think that this story has made a positive contribution over the years?
Please give an example.
o The Lorax greatly made a positive contribution over the years because
it became as an eye opener to the people of what is already and would
happen if we continue on being careless like cutting trees without the
plan on preserving and sustaining it for the future. The lesson of the
story will be inculcated not just to the kids but also to the adults who
watched the movie. It would be a great platform to start something
great and helpful for the environment.
3. If you have kids someday, would you read them this story? Why or why not?
o I would love to read this story to my future kids someday. The story is
not just full of lessons but also very entertaining. It is great way to tell
them on how to take care of the environment. They could relate
themselves to the main character as the hope in saving the trees.
4. What is the message at the very end of the story? What does it mean? Why do
you think Dr.Seuss ended it this way?
o The message of the story is we should respect and take care of nature
and natural resources. Let us have a give and take relationship not just
take and take. We have the responsibilities to protect them not to
destroy them. We are the only one who keep on getting the benefits
while they are gradually damaging. I think Dr. Seuss ended it this way
to tell us that there is still hope. We can still do something, to save and
to sustain the nature. A something great will begin on us, let us plant
trees and take care of them.
