Slope and Deflection in Beams

The document discusses methods for calculating slope and deflection in beams. It introduces the unit load method, also called the virtual work method. The deflection equation and slope equation are presented using this method, involving integrals of the moment equation due to a unit load or moment. Examples are given to find slope and deflection at specific points for beams with different load and support conditions.

STRUCTURAL THEORY
I. Theory of Structures: Part 2 (CONTINUED)
A. Slope and Deflection on Beams
- Slope is the rotation or angle of the curvature of the elastic curve of a beam.
- Deflection id the bending deformation or from the original reference line of the an axis (either horizontal or
vertical)
- Elastic curve is the theoretical graph of the bending deformation of the beam.

B. Methods in solving the slope and deflection on beams

2. Unit Load Method/Virtual Work Method
a. Deflection Equation

b. Slope Equation

( )=

Where:
M – General Moment Equation
MV1 – General Moment equation due to 1 unit load applied at the poinpointt where the deflection is desired
MV2 – General Moment equation due to 1 unit moment applied at the point where the slope is desired
a – Lower limit
b – Higher limit
EI – Flexural Rigidity (modulus of rigidity and moment of inertia respectively)
y – Deflection
θ – Slope

TAKE NOTE:
1. IF E and/or I vary integrate per parts and add them all accordingly.
2. In cutting sections looking at the left assumption is upward is positive, downward is negative, clockwise is positive and
counter-clockwise
clockwise is negative. While ooki
ooking at the right side upward is negative, downward is positive, clockwise is negative
and counter-clockwise is positive
