Rizal Law Debate Highlights

RA 1425, also known as the Rizal Law, was passed on June 12, 1956 after extensive debate in the Philippine Congress. The law requires Philippine schools to teach the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal. Initially, there was conflict between the Senate and House versions of the bill. However, Senator Jose P. Laurel, chairman of the Committee on Education, helped move the debate forward by proposing amendments to find a resolution and end the pointless conflict. The law was ultimately passed, further bringing attention to Rizal's works and their importance in Philippine history and nationalism.
