Post Weld Heat Treatment Effects on Finned Tubes

The document studies the effect of welding parameters and post weld heat treatment on finned tubes made of SA-213 T91 steel and SA-240 TP409 stainless steel fins, welded using high frequency resistance welding. The experiments found that a welding current of 6.5A, voltage of 11kV, and tube rotation speed of 90-100 rpm produced acceptable dimensions and strength. Higher speeds required increased current and voltage to maintain heat input between 300-400J/mm. Post weld heat treatment decreased strength and hardness slightly as martensite transformed to tempered martensite, but reduction in strength was not significant. Therefore, post weld heat treatment was deemed unnecessary for these finned tubes.

Abstract
The finned tube is widely used for the power plant and petrochemical industries due to their increases performance of
heat exchange. The production method for manufacturing is the high frequency resistance welding process (HFRW).
During welding, the welding parameters (current, voltage and speed) are mainly effect to quality and mechanical
properties of the finned tube. This present work aims to study the effect of welding parameter and post weld heat
treatment (PWHT) on the finned tube of high temperature steel (SA-213 T91) with a fin of ferritic stainless steel (SA-
240 TP409) welding by using the HFRW process. The experimental results showed that when using welding current
6.5A and voltage 11kV the appropriate tube rotating speed was 90-100 rpm. These relationships can be explained by in
case of lower speed lead to unaccepted final dimension, higher speed showed low tensile strength of weldment. It also
was found that when increase of tube speed the welding current and voltage shall be increased in order to balance the
heat input. It can be recommended that the control of heat input in the range of 300-400J/mm was suitable for the finned
tube production by the HFRW process. After post weld heat treatment at 760oC, tensile strength and hardness were
decreased due to the martensite phase in weldment and HAZ was transformed to the tempered martensite. However, the
reduction of tensile strength was reduced not significantly. Form these results it can be recommended that PWHT
process of the finned tube SA-335 T91 steel is not essential due to when it used at high temperature the martensite will
automatically transforms to the tempered martensite.
