Article 300 General Requirements for Wiring Methods and Materials
300.1 Scope
(A) All Wiring installations
This article covers general requirements for wing methods and materials for all wing installations unless modified by eer artes in
Chapter 3
(@) integral Parts of Equipment
The provisions ofthis article are not intended to apaly tothe conductors that form an inlagral part of equipment, such as motors, contrallers
‘motor contral centers, of factory-assembled control equipment or listed utiization equipment.
(C) Metric Designators and Trade Sizes,
Motte designators and trade sizes for condul, tubing, and associated fitings and accessories shall be as designated in Table 300.1(C),

300.2 Limitations.
(A) Voltage
\Wiring metnods species in Chapter 3 shall be used for 1000 volts, nominal o less where not specifeally linted in some section of
Chapter 3, They shall be permitted for over 1000 vot, nominal, where specially permitted elsewhere in this Code,(8) Temperature

300.3 Conductors
(A) Single Conductors
‘Single conductors speci in Table 310.104(A) shal only be installed where part of a recognized wiring method of Chapter 3.
Exception: Individual conductors shall be permitted where installed as separate overhead conductors in accordance with 225 6
(8) Conductors of the Same Circuit
‘Al conductors ofthe same circuit and, whare used, the grounded conductor and all equipment grounding conductors and bonding
conductors shall be contained within the same raceway, auxilary gutter, cable ray, cablebus assembly, tronch, cable, or cord, unless
otherwise permitted in accordance with 300,3(8)(1) tough (8) 6),

{@) Grounding and Bonding Conductors
Equipment grounding conductors shall be permitted to be installed outside a raceway or cable assembly where in accordance withthe
provisions of 250.*90(C) for certain existing installations or in accordance with 250.134(8), Exception No. 2, for de circuits. Equipment
bonding conductors shall be permitted tobe installed on the ouside of raceways in accordance with 250.102
(6) Nonferrous Wiring Methods
Conductors in wiring methods with a nonmetallic or ther nonmagnetic sheath, where run in diferent raceways, auxllary gutters, cable
trays, trenches, cables, or cords, shall comply wit the provisions of 300.20(8). Conductors in single-conductor Type Ml cable with a
rrenmagntic sheath shall comply wih the provisions of 932.31. Conductors of single-conductor Type MC cable with a nonmagnetic
sheath shall comply withthe provisions of 330.31, 330.116, and 300.20(8),
(4) Column-Width Panelboard Enclosures
\Where an auxiliary gutter runs between a colurnn-width panelboard and a pull Dox, and the pul box includes neutral terminations, the
neutral conductors of circuits supplied from the panelboard shall be permitted to originate inthe pull box.
(C) Conductors of Different Systems
(1) 1000 Volts, Nominal, or Less
Conductors of ac and circuits, rated 1000 volts, nominal, o less, shall be permitted to occupy the same equipment wiring enclosure,
cable, or raceway, All conductors shall have an insulation rating equal to at least the maximum circuit voltage applied to any conductor
within the enclosure, cable, or raceway,
Secondary wiring to electrc-dischargo lamps of 1000 volts or lass, if insulated forthe secondary voltage involved, shall be permitiod
to occupy the same luminaire, sign, oF outine lighting enclosure as the branchecircult conductors

(2) Over 1000 Volts, Nominal
Conductors of cuits rated over 1000 vols, nominal, shall not occupy the same equipment wiring enclosure, cable, or raceway with
conductors of circuits rated 1000 voli, nominal, or les unless otherwise permitted in 300.3(C)2)(a) through 300.3(C)(2\4).

permite,

300.4 Protection Against Physical Damage
\Where subject to physical damage, conductors, raceways, and cables shall be protecte
(A) Cables and Raceways Through Wood Members,
(1) Bored Hotes

(F) Cables and Raceways Installed in Shallow Grooves

Where raceways contain 4 AWG cr larger insulated circuit conductors, and these conductors enter a cabinet, a box, an enclosure, ora
raceway, the conductors shall be protected by an identified fiting providing a smoothly rounded insulating surface, unless the conductors
are separate from the iting or raceway by identified insulating material that's securely fastened in place.
Excoption: Where threaded hubs or bosses that aro an integral part of a cabinet, box, enclosure, or raceway provide a smoothly rounded or
aed entry for conductors.
Condit bushings constructed wholly of insulating material shall not be used to secure a fiting or raceway. The insulating fiting or
insulating material shal have a temperature rating not less than the insulation temperature rating ofthe installed conductors.
(H) Structural Joints
‘listed expansionidelection fiting or other approved means shall be used where a raceway crosses a structural joint intended for
expansion, contraction or deflection, used in buildings, bridges, parking garages, or other structures.
300.5 Underground Installations

(0) Protection From Damage
Direct-buried conductors and cables shall be protected from damage in accordance with 300.5(0)1) through (04).
(1) Emerging From Grade
Direct-buried conductors and cables emerging from grade and specified in columns 1 and 4 of Table 300.5 shall be protected by
{enclosures or raceways extending from the minimum cover distance below grade required by 300.5(A) to point atleast 2.5 m (8)
‘ove fnished grad. In no case shall he protection be required to exceed 450 mm (18 in.) below fished grace.
(2) Conductors Entering Bulldings
Conductors entering building shall be protected tothe point of entrance.
(@) Sorvice Conductors
Underground service conductors that are not encased in concrete and that are buried 450 mm (18 in.) or more below grade shall have
their location identified by a warning ribbon thats placed inthe trench atleast 300 mm (12 in.) above the underground installation.
(4) Enclosure or Raceway Damage
\Where the enclosure or raceway is subject to physical damage, the concluctrs shall be installed in electrcal metalic tubing, rigid metal
Conduit, intermediate metal conduit, RTRC-XW, Schedule 80 PYC conduit, or equivalent

Direct-buried conductors or cables shall be permited tobe spliced or tapped without the use of spice boxes. The splices or taps shall be
‘made in accordance with 110.14(8).
(F) Backfill

(6) Raceway Seals
Conduits or raceways thraugh which moisture may contact ive parts shall be sealed or plugged a ether or both ends. Spare or unused
raceways shall also be sealed. Sealants shal be identifed for use withthe cable insulation, conductor insulation, bare conductor, shield, or
other components
Informational Note: Presence of hazardous gases or vapors may also necessitate sealing of underground conduits or
raceways entering buildings.
(H) Bushing‘A bushing, or terminal fiting, with an integral bushed opening shall be used atthe end of @ conduit or other raceway that terminates.

direct-buried conductors, raceways, or cables are subject lo movement by seltlement or fos, drect-bured conductors, raceways, or
cables shall be arranged so as to prevent damage to the enclosed conductors arto equipment connected tothe raceways.
Informational Note: This section recognizes "S" loops in underground direct burial cables and conductors to raceway
transitions, expansion fitings in raceway risers to fixed equipment, and, generally, the provision of flexible
connections to equipment subject to settlement or frost heaves.
(4) Directional Boring
Cables or raceways installed using directional boring equipment shall be approved forthe purpose.
300.6 Protection Against Corrosion and Deterioration
Raceways, cable trays, cablebus, auxiliary gutters, cable armor, boxes, cable sheathing, cabinets, elbows, couplings, tings, supports, and
support hardware shall be of materials suitable for the environment in which they are toe installed.
(A) Ferrous Metal Equipment
Ferrous metal raceways, cable trays, cableous, auxiliary guters, cable armor, boxes, cable sheathing, cabinets, metal elbows, couplings,
ripples, fitings, supports, and support hardware shall be sulably protected against corosion inside and outside (except threads at joints) by
‘2 coating of approved corrosion-esistant material, Where corrosion protection is necessary and the cont is threaded inthe field, the
threads shall be coated with an approved electrically conductive, corrosion-esistant compound

(1) Protected From Corrosion Solely by Enam
\Where protected from corrosion solely by enamel, ferrous metal raceways, cable trays, cablebus, auxllary gutters, cable armor, boxes,
cable sheathing, cabinets, metal elbows, couplings, nipples, fitings, supports, and support hardware shall ot be used outdoors or in
wat locations as described in 300,6(0)
(@) Organic Coatings on Boxes or Cabinets
\Where boxes or cabinets have an approved system of organic coatings and are marked "Raintgh,” *Rainproof,” of “Outdoor Type,”
they shall be permitted outdoors
(8) In Conerate or in Direct Contact With the EarthFerrous metal raceways, cable armor, boxes, cable sheathing, cabinets, elbows, couplings, nipples, tings, supports, and support
hardware shal be permitted tobe installed in concrete or indirect contact with the earth, orn areas subject to severe corrosive
influences where made of material approved forthe condition, or where provided with corosion protection approved for the concition.
(8) Aluminum Metal Equipment
‘Aluminum raceways, cable trays, cablebus, auxiliary gutters, cable armor, boxes, cable sheathing, cabinets, elbows, couplings, nipples,
fitings, suppors, and support hardware embeded or encased in concrete or in diect contact wih the earth shall be provided with
supplementary corrosion protection
(©) Nonmeta
Equipment
Nonmetalic raceways, cable trays, cablebus, auxiiary gutters, boxes, cables with a nonmetallic outer jacket and intemal metal armor or
Jacket, cable sheathing, cabinets, elbows, couplings, nipples, tings, supports, and support hardware shall be made of material approved
for the condition and shall comply with (C1) and (C)(2) as applicable tothe specific installation.
(1) Exposed to Sunlight
\Where exposed to sunlight, the materials shal be listed as sunlight resistant or shall be ientied as sunlight resistant
(2) Chemical Exposure
\Whore subjoc to exposure to chemical solvents, vapors, splashing, or immersion, materials or coatings shall either bo innorently
resistant to chemicals based on ther Hstng or be identited for the specific chemical reagent.
(0) Indoor Wet Locations
In portions of dary processing facities, laundries, canneres, and other indoor wet locations, and in locations where walls aro frequently
washed or where there are surfaces of absorbent materials, such as damp paper or wood, te entire wiring system, where installed
‘exposed, including ll boxes, tings, raceways, and cable used therewith, shall be mounted so that there is atleast a &-mm (Vin)
airspace between it and the wall or supporting surface.
Excoption: Nonmetallic raceways, boxes, and ftings shall be permited to be installed without the airspace on a concrete, masonry, tile, or
simiar sutoco.
Informational Note: In general, areas where acids and alkali chemicals are handled and stored may present such
corrosive contitions, particularly when wet or damp. Severe corrosive conditions may also be present in portions of
‘meatpacking plants, tanneries, glue houses, and some stables; in installations immediately adjacent to a seashore
‘and swimming pool areas; in areas where chemical deicers are used: and in storage cellars or rooms for hides,
casings, fertlizer, salt, and bulk chemicals.
300.7 Raceways Exposed to Differont Temperatures
(A) Sealing
\Where portions of a raceway or sleeve are known to be subjected to diferent temperature, and where condensation is known to be a
problem, as in cole storage areas of buldings or where passing from the interior tothe exterior ofa building, the raceway or sleeve shall be
filed with an approved material to prevent the circulation of warm air toa cole section ofthe raceway or sleeve. An explosionproot seal
shall not be require for this purpose.
(8) Expansion, Expansion-Deflection, and Deflection Fittings
Raceways shal be provided with expansion, expansion-deflecton, or deflection ftings where necessary to compensate for thermal
‘expansion, deflection, and contraction,
Informational Note: Table 352.44 and Table 355.44 provide the expansion information for polyvinyl chioride (PVC) and
{or reinforced thermosetting resin conduit (RTRC), respectively. A nominal number for steel conduit can be

300.8 Installation of Conductors With Other Systems

1300.9 Raceways in Wet Locations Abovegrade
\Whare raceways are installed in wet locations abovegrade, the interior ofthese raceways shall be considered to be a wetlocation. Insulated
conductors and cables installed in raceways in wet locations abovagrade shall comply with 310.10(C).
{300,10 Electrical Continuity of Metal Raceways and Enclosures
Metal raceways, cable armor, and other metal enclosures for conductors shall be metallcaly joined together into a continuous electrical
conductor and shall be connected to all boxes, filings, and cabinels so as to provide. trical continuity. Unless specifically
permitted elsewmere in tis Code, raceways and cable assemblies shall be mechanically secured lo boxes, filings, cabinets, and ather
enclosures.

Exception No. 1: Short sections of raceways used fo provide suppor or protection of cable assembles from physical damage shall not be
required to be made electrically continuous.
Exception No. 2: Equipment enclosures tobe isolated. as permitted by 260.96(6), shal not be required to be metalically joined tothe metal

300.11 Securing and Supporting
(A) Secured in Place
Raceways, cable assemblies, boxes, cabinets, and fitings shall be securely fastened in place,

300.20 Induced Currents in Ferrous Metal Enclosures or Ferrous Metal Raceways
(A) Conductors Grouped Together
Where conductors canying alternating curent are installed in ferrous metal enclosures of ferrous metal raceways, they shal be arranged so

or products of combustion will not be substantially increased. Operings around electrical penetrations into or through freesistant-ated
walls, pattions, floors, or celings shall be frestopped using approved methods to maintain the fre resistance rating

‘This section shall apply to spaces nat specifically fabricated for environmental ai-handling purposes but used for aichandling purposes as a
plenum. This section shall not apply to habitable rooms or areas of buildings, the prime purpase of which isnot air handling.
Informational Note No. 1: The space over a hung celing used for environmental air-andling purposes is an example
‘of the type of other space fo which this section applies.
Informational Note No. 2: The phrase "Other Spaces Used for Environmental Air (Plenum) as used in this section

(8) Equipment
Electrical equipment with @ metal enclosure, or electrical equipment with a nonmetalic enclosure Isted for use within an ai-handling
space and having low smoke and heat release properies, and associated wiring material suitable forthe ambient temperature shall be

Underground cables, inclusing nonshieléed, Type MC and moisture-impervious metal sheath cables, shall have those sheaths.
grounded through an effective grounding path meeting the requirements of 250.4(A)(5) ar (B)(). They shal be direct buried or installed
in raceways identied forthe use
Metal-Sheathed Cable Assombli(2) Industrial Establishments
In industrial establishments, where concitons of maintenance and supervision ensue that only qualified persons service the installed
cable, nonshielded single-conductor cables with insulation types up to 2000 volts that are listed for direct burial shall be permited to be
directly buried.
(6) Other Nonshielded Cables
(Other nonshielded cables not covered in 300.50(A)(1) oF (A)2) shall be installed in rig metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, or
‘igié nonmetallic conduit encased in not less than 75 mm (3 in.) of concrete.
(8) Wet Locations
‘The interior of enclosures or raceways installed underground shall be considered to be a wet location. Insulated conductors and cables
Installed in these enclosures or raceways in underground installations shall be listed for use in wel locations and shall comply with
310.10(C), Any connections or splices in an underground installation shall be approved for wet locations.
(C) Protection From Damage
Conductors emerging rom the ground shall be enclosed in listed raceways, Raceways installed on poles shall be of rigid metal conduit
Intermediate metal condult, RTRC-XW, Schedule 80 PVC condul, oF equivalent, extending rom the minimum caver depth specifies in Table
300.50 to a point 25 m (8 above finshed grade. Conductors entering a building shall bo prolocted by an approved enclosure or raceway
from the minimum cover depth tothe point of enlrance. Where diect-burled conductors, raceways, a cables are subject to movement by
settlement o fos, they shall be installed to prevent damage to the enclosed conductors orto the equipment connected to the raceways.

(0) Splices
Direct burial cables shall be permitied tobe spliced or tapped without the use of splice boxes, provided they are installed using materials
suitable forthe application. The taps and splices shall be watertight and protected feom mechanical damage. Where cables are shielded, the
shielding shall be continuous across the splice or tap.
Exception: At spices ofan engineered cabling system, metalic shields of direc-buried single-conductor cables with maintained spacing
between phases shall be permited tobe interrupted and overlapped. Where shields are interrupted and overlapped, each shield section
