Multiplication of Numbers

By Two-Digit Multipliers

Expectations
This lesson will help you :

 Identify the numbers in multiples of 10, 100, and 1 000;and

 Use the shortcut method to multiply numbers by multiples of 10, 100 or
1 000

Preparatory Activity
Study the multiplication table below.

6 X 10 = 60
65 X 10 = 650
123 X 10 = 1 230

6 X 100 = 600
65 X 100 = 6 500
123 X 100 = 12 300

6 X 1 000 = 6 000
65 X 1 000 = 65 000
123 X 1 000 = 123 000
Exploratory Activities
To multiply a number by 10, multiply the given number by 1, then affix
one zero.
8 X 10 = 80
15 X 10 = 150

To multiply a number by 100, multiply the given number by 1, then affix

two zeros.
8 X 100 = 800
15 X 100 = 1 500

To multiply a number by 1 000, multiply the given number by 1, then

affix three zeros.
8 X 1 000 = 8 000
15 X 1 000 = 15 000
Here is how the preceding table interpreted:

Mr. Carlos packed 400 trays of eggs with 40 eggs in each tray. How many
eggs in all did he pack?

Let us answer the following questions:

1. How many trays of eggs did he pack? 400 trays
2. How many eggs were there in each tray? 40 eggs
3. What is the mathematical sentence? 400 X 40 = n
4. How many zeros are there in the factors? Three zeros
5. What is the total number of eggs in the pack? 16 000 eggs
6. How many zeros are there in the product? Three zeros
7. Does the product have the same number
Of zeros as the factors? yes

Practice For Understanding

Complete the table.

Factor Multiple by Multiple by Multiple by 1

10 100 000
1. 200
2. 3 000
3. 5 200
4. 8 300
5. 1 200

To multiply numbers that are multiples of 10, 100, 1 000 or those that end in
zeros, find the total number of zeros at the end of the factors. Write the same
number of zeros in the product and multiply the non-zero digits separating the
periods using commas or space.

A. Use the patterns to find each product.

3. 10 X 80 = ____________ 4. 40 X 10 = ____________

100 X 80 = ____________ 40 X 100 = ____________

1 000 X 800 = ____________ 400 X 100 = ____________

1 000 X 8 000 = ____________ 4 000 X 1 000 = ____________

1. 70 X 10 = ____________
70 X 100 = ____________
700 X 1 000 = ____________
5. 230 X 10 = ____________
230 X 100 = ____________
2 300 X 100 = ____________
2 300 X 1 000 = ____________

B. Find the product.
