1. This document provides notice of precautions to take during functional testing of high-level sensors on aircraft to prevent fuel spillage. 2. It emphasizes ensuring a container is placed under the vent to collect any spilled fuel and having someone closely monitor fuel levels and stop refueling before reaching the maximum of 2578 kg to avoid overflow. 3. The notice is meant to prevent fuel spillage that could occur if the automatic closure of the refuel valve fails during testing of the high-level sensors that act as a secondary safety measure during refueling.

OBJECTIVE : EMPHASIS ON PRECAUTIONS DURING FUNCTIONAL

TEST (FUT) OF HIGH-LEVEL SENSORS TO PREVENT
FUEL SPILLAGE.

DESCRIPTION :

This is in reference to ATR Maintenance Procedure; MP ATR-A-28-25-70-00002-340A-A

Functional Test of the High-Level Sensor and the Auto Closure of the Refueling Valve.

The task calls for refueling the tank above the maximum value of 2500 kg.

Once the fuel quantity reaches 2500 kg, the Fuel Control Unit (FCU) will send a signal to the
Refueling Control Panel (RCP) to request closure of the Refuel Valve. If this primary safety device
fails, the fuel will overflow into the surge tank which can hold 78 kg of fuel.

The high-level sensor located in surge tank acts as a secondary safety device to send an
electrical signal to the RCP for closure of the Refuel Valve.

Beyond 2578 kg, fuel will overflow through the NACA vent.

On some occasions due to a faulty sub-system or component, automatic closure of refuel valve
may not take place resulting in fuel spillage through the NACA vent.

To prevent fuel spillage while performing functional test of high-level sensors, following
should be ensured:

1. Place a container under the NACA vent of the side being tested to collect fuel if spillage
occurs.

2. One person to closely monitor the RCP value and stop the refueling before the fuel
quantity reaches 2578 kg.
