SECTION I
DIRECTED SITUATIONS
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.
Write in SPANISH the information required for EACH of the situations given below. Do
not use more than one sentence for each situation. A complete sentence MAY not be
necessary. Do NOT translate the situation given.
CANDIDATES WILL BE PENALISED FOR DISREGARDING THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
1. You go to a sports shop for a special item but you do not find it. Write a note to the
manager who is not there, requesting the item.
2. While you are at the gym, you get a text message from your friend with information
about the venue for the meeting you had arranged. Write the text message you received.
3. The elevator in the hospital is out of order. What does the notice advising you of this
say?
4. You are on holiday overseas when you hear that your mother has won an award.
Write the e-mail message you send to congratulate her.
5. You have been admiring a classmate and wish to let him/her know how you feel.
What do you write in the Valentine's Day card you send?
6. Your aunt sends you an e-mail inviting you to a concert. Write a note declining the
invitation.
7. You are very concerned about the environment but your friend is not. Write a note
suggesting to him something he can do to improve the environment.
8. There is a shortage of gasoline in your country and its purchase is being controlled. Write
the notice informing the public about the amount they are allowed to purchase.
9. Your assignment is done but you are unable to submit it on a particular date. What
apology do you write in a note to your teacher?
10. Your neighbour's dog has destroyed a beautiful plant in your garden. Write the brief
note you leave for him/her making a recommendation about the dog.

LETTER/DIALOGUE/COMPOSITION
Using ONE of the following outlines as a guide, write in SPANISH, a letter OR dialogue
OR composition of NO MORE THAN 130 - 150 words. Use the tense or tenses appropriate
to the topic which you have chosen.

EITHER
LETTER
You have been invited to visit your pen pal in a Spanish-speaking country but there has been a
hurricane which is preventing you from travelling. Write a letter in which you
(i) apologize for not being able to go, giving your reason
(ii) give a description of the damage caused by the hurricane
(iii) discuss one thing you wanted to experience during your visit
(iv) make suggestions for visiting another time.
(Do NOT write your real name and address, but include the date in SPANISH and use the
appropriate beginning and ending.)
OR
DIALOGUE
You have had an enjoyable holiday with a relative in a Spanish-speaking country and are on
your way home. Write a dialogue between you and your relative in which you
(i) comment on the hotel facilities
(ii) recall an amusing incident in the shopping centre
(iii) discuss the gifts you bought for family members
(iv) agree to spend the holiday together again next year.
OR
COMPOSITION
Your family has moved to a new house. Write a composition for your Spanish class and include
(i) your impression of the house
(ii) how a neighbour greeted you I welcomed you
(iii) the facilities for young people in the community
(iv) your plans to decorate your room.

Read the following selection carefully. Do NOT translate, but answer the questions in
ENGLISH. Be sure to identify by number the question to which your answer refers.
A Thoughtful Thief
Era domingo y como de costumbre todos los miembros de la familia se habian
reunido en la casa de los abuelos. Habian decidido tener un dfa de descanso y asi, despues de
una sabrosa comida con paella, cochinillo asado y ensalada acompafiada de vino tinto, se
quedaron en el comedor.
No tenian ganas de hacer nada mas que charlar y bromear. Cada persona comparti6 un
chiste y ahora le toc6 el tumo al abuelo Raul.
Mientras el les relataba una historia de su aventurera juventud, Alfredo, su nieto de
cinco afios, trat6 ansiosamente de interrumpirlo para decide que alguien estaba metiendo un
palo por la ventana. Todos estaban tan entretenidos con el cuento del abuelo que no le
hicieron caso.
Mas tarde Raul decidi6 ir a preparar unos churros con chocolate caliente en Ia cocina
para toda la familia. AI voltearse, se sorprendi6 cuando vio el palo con un recado colgado de
Ia ventana. El recado decia:
Aqui tiene su billetero. La proxima vez asegurese que tenga dinero.
