1. The Real Numbers
A set of real numbers is composed of numbers which are positive, negative or zero. These numbers
can be classified as:

2. Properties of Real Numbers


For real numbers A, B, and C:
2.1 Commutative Property of Addition: Changing the position of the addends does not affect the
sum. A + B = B + A Example: 14 + 25 = 25 + 14

2.2 Commutative Property of Multiplication: Changing the position of the factors does not affect the

2.6 Identity Property of Multiplication: If 1 is multiplied to any real number, the product is the
number itself. The multiplicative identity (the identity element of multiplication) is 1.

2.7 Inverse Property of Addition: Any real number added to its additive inverse is equal to 0.

2.8 Inverse Property of Multiplication: If a real number is multiplied by reciprocal, the product is 1.

2.9 Distributive Property of Multiplication Over Addition: If a real number is multiplied by the sum of
real numbers inside the parenthesis, distribute the multiplication over all the real numbers inside.
A(B + C) = AB + AC Example: 6(3 + 4) = (6 x 3) + (6 x 4) = 18 + 24 = 42
2.10 Multiplication Property of Zero: If a real number is multiplied by 0, the product is 0.

2.11 Division Property of Zero: If 0 is divided by any real number other than 0 is equal to 0.

2.12 Division Property of One
If a number other than 0 is divided by itself, it is equal to 1. A ÷ A = 1 Example: 21 ÷ 21 = 1
2.13 Closure Property: If A and B are real numbers, then A + B is a unique real number, and A ∙ B is a
unique real number. (If A and B are real numbers, then A + B and A ∙ B are real numbers.)
Example 1: 4 and 6 are real numbers; 4 + 6 = 10 and 4 x 6 = 24, and 10 and 24 are real numbers.
Therefore, real numbers are closed under addition and multiplication.

Example 2: Real numbers are not closed under the operation division because is not a real

number even though 1 and 0 are real numbers.
2.14 Density Property: There is always a real number between any two real numbers.
Example: Between 3 and 4 is 3.5

EXPONENTIAL AND SCIENTIFIC NOTATIONS


1. Exponential notation is another way of writing a number that is taken as a factor for a certain
number of times. Examples: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 2 4 = 16 5 x 5 x 5 = 53 = 125
2. Scientific notation is expressing a number as a product of a number greater than or equal to 1 but
less than 10 and a power of 10. Examples: 839 = 8.39 x 102 ; 7 654 = 7.654 x 103

ORDER OF OPERATIONS
Remember PEMDAS: Parentheses first, Exponents next, then Multiplication or Division before
Addition or Subtraction.
Example 1: 4 + (6 – 3)2 x 4 – 6 = 4 + 32 x 4 – 6 = 4 + 9 x 4 – 6 = 4 + 36 – 6 = 40 – 6 = 34
Example 2: 175 – (82–32) + (81÷ 3)2 x 100 = 175 – (64–32) + (27)2 x 100 = 175 – 32 + 729 x 100
= 143 + 72 900 = 73 043

DIVISIBILITY RULES
A number is divisible by:
2 – if the number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 (the number is even).

3 – if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3.
Example: 34 671 3 + 4 + 6 + 7 + 1 = 21 21 ÷ 3 = 7
4 – if the last two digits of the number is divisible by 4.

5 – if the number ends in 0 or 5.

6 – if the number is even and is divisible by 3.

7 - if twice the last digit of the number, when subtracted from the remaining digits, will give a
difference of 0 or a number that is divisible by 7.
Examples: 448 44 – (2 x 8) = 44 – 16 = 28; 28 ÷ 7 = 4

8 – if the last three digits of the number are 000 or divisible by 8.

9 – if the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9.

PRIME AND COMPOSITE NUMBERS


Prime numbers are counting numbers that have only two factors, 1 and the number itself.
Examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, . . .
Composite numbers are counting numbers that have more than two factors.
Examples: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, . . .

 1 is neither prime nor composite.


 2 is the only even number that is prime.
 All even numbers, except 2, are composite.
 Some composite numbers are odd.
 All prime numbers are odd, except 2.

PRIME FACTORIZATION

Prime factorization refers to both the process as well as to the result of the process of expressing a
counting number as the product of its prime factors.
Example: 32 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 2 5
* If the counting number is prime, its prime factorization is the number itself.
Example: 11 The prime factorization of 11 is itself.

Methods of Getting the Prime Factorization of Numbers


1. Continuous/Repeated Division Example: 24 2 24

GREATEST COMMON FACTOR (GCF)


The GCF of two or more numbers is the largest whole number divisor of the given numbers.
Example: The GCF of 10 and 15 is 5.

Methods of finding the GCF

3. Euclidian Method ( can only be used when finding the GCF of only two numbers )
Example: 12 and 20
Steps: 1) Divide the larger number by the other.
2) If there is a remainder, divide the last divisor by the remainder. Repeat this no
remainder is left.
3) The GCF is the last divisor.
20 ÷ 12 = 1 with a remainder of 8
12 ÷ 8 = 1 with a remainder of 4
8 ÷ 4 = 2 with no remainder Thus, the GCF of 12 and 20 is 4.

Two or more numbers are said to be relatively prime if their GCF is 1.


Example: 11, 12, 19 11 = 1, 11

LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM)


The least common multiple (LCM) of two or more numbers is the least nonzero multiple of all the
numbers.

Methods of Finding the LCM


1. Intersections of Sets Method/Listing Method – List their multiples from least to greatest until you
arrive at a common multiple.
Example 1: 8 – 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, . . . The LCM of 8 and 20 is 40.
20 – 20, 40, . . .

Example 2: 3 – 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, . . . The LCM of 3, 5, and 10 is 30.
5 – 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, . . .
10 – 10, 20, 30, . . .
2. Prime Factorization – Write the prime factorization for each of the given numbers so that common,
and only common prime factors are in the same column. Bring down all the prime factors of the
numbers. The common prime factors shall be brought just once. The product of the prime factors is
the LCM of the numbers.
Example: 8 = 2 x 2 x 2 3=1x3
20 = 2 x 2 x 5 5=1x 5
2 x 2 x 2 x 5 = 40 is the LCM of 8 and 20 10 = 5x2

3. Euclidean Algorithm – Divide the product of the two given numbers by their GCF.

4. Repeated/Continuous Division – Divide the numbers by any prime number. If one or two of the
numbers are not divisible by the chosen prime number, bring it/them down. Continue dividing until
all the quotients is 1. Get the product of the prime divisors. The product is the LCM of the given
numbers.
Example: Find the LCM of 6, 12, 18 2 6 12 18

A fraction is a part of a whole or a group. It is indicated division.

Kinds of Fractions
1. As to relation between the numerator and the denominator.
1.1 Proper fraction – The numerator is less than the denominator. It is less than 1.

Simplifying Fractions/Reducing Fractions to its Lowest Terms


To simplify a fraction, divide both the numerator and the denominator by their GCF.

Another method of simplifying fraction is through the use of cancellation method. That is, list down
the prime factors of the numerator and the denominator. Cancel the common prime factors. Get the
product of the remaining prime factors if there are more than one.

1. Addition (Subtraction)
1.1 To add similar or subtract similar fractions, add or subtract the denominators and copy the

DECIMALS
1. To add decimals, write them in column. Align the decimal points. Add like whole numbers.
2. To subtract decimals, subtract like subtracting whole numbers. If the number of digits in the
minuend is less than that of the subtrahend, add zeros to make the number of decimal places the
same.
3. To multiply decimals, multiply like whole numbers. The number of decimal places in the product
should be equal to the number of decimal places in the factors. To locate the decimal point in the
product, start counting from the right going to the left until the desired number of decimal places
is attained.
4. To divide a decimal by a whole number, divide like dividing whole numbers. Place the decimal
point in the quotient in line with the decimal point in the dividend.
5. To divide a whole number or a decimal by a decimal, make the divisor a whole number by moving
the decimal point to the right. The number of movements is dependent on the number of
decimal places. Divide like dividing whole numbers. If there is a decimal point in the dividend,
Align the decimal point in the quotient and in the dividend.
RATIO AND PROPORTION
A ratio is the relationship between two quantities or terms. It tells how much greater or lesser
one term is in comparison with another term. The terms being compared are separated using a colon
( : ) or a fraction bar.

Simplifying a ratio is just like simplifying a fraction.
A rate is a comparison of two quantities that have different units. Examples: 195 km : 4 hour,
P1 440 : 3 sets
A proportion is a statement of equality between two ratios.
In a proportion, the product of the means is equal to the product of the extremes (Fundamental
Property of Proportion).
Example:
3 : 5 = 6 : 10 3 and 10 are the extremes; 5 and 6 are the means

To find the missing term in a proportion, use the fundamental property of proportion.

The division of a quantity or a whole into two or more equal or unequal parts is called partitive
proportion. The ratios in a partitive proportion can be presented in the form

x : y : z = nx : ny : nz.
Example: In an orchard of 1 800 trees, there are guava, lanzones and guyabano trees planted
in the ratio of 2 : 4 : 3. How many trees of each kind are there in the orchard?

PERCENT
A percent comes from the Latin word per centum which means for every hundred. In Math,
percent is a special ratio that compares a certain number to 100. It is a ratio whose meaning is similar
to a fraction whose denominator is 100. It can be written also as a decimal.

* To change a decimal to percent, simply move the decimal point two places to the right and affix the

Finding the Percentage
To find the percentage, multiply the base by the rate ( p = r x b).

2) In a class of 40 pupils, 25 % stayed for a few minutes to put everything in the room order. How
many pupils stayed in the room? 25% x 40 = 0.25 x 40 = 10 pupils stayed in the room
3) In a parents-teachers meeting, 75 people attended. 60% attendees were parents. How many
were teachers? 60% x 75 = 0.6 x 75 = 45 were parents 75 – 45 = 30 were teachers

Finding the Base

Commission is a percentage of the total sales or amount received for a business transaction and is

DISCOUNT
The marked price (original price) is the price at which a product is originally sold. The discount is the
reduction (amount of money) in the marked price. The net price is the amount that remains after the
discount is subtracted from the marked price.
Examples: 1) A dining set that costs P22 995 is sold at 24% discount. What is the net price of the
dining set? 24% x P22 995 = 0.24 x P22 995 = P5 518.80 is the discount
P22 995 – P5 518.80 = P17 476.20 is the net price
2) A shirt costs P300. The original price is P360. What was the discount rate?

FINDING INTEREST
A. Simple Interest is the amount earned or charged for money invested or borrowed at a certain rate
per year. Principal is the amount of money invested or borrowed. Interest rate is the percent of the
principal paid or earned. Time, expressed in years, is the period allotted for repayment of the
principal. To solve for the simple interest, use the formula: I = principal x rate x time or I = prt.
Examples: 1) A certain bank pays 4.5% annual interest on time deposit. How much interest will it pay
a client at the end of 1 year for an investment of P85 000?
