Definition of mental health
• It does not mean the absence of mental disorders. It is the
ability to adjust to new situations and to handle personal
problems without marked distress and still have enough
energy to be a constructive member of society.
• Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to
cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and
work well, and contribute to their community ( WHO).
• A person’s condition regarding his psychological and
emotional well-being.
Definition of mental illnesses
• The mind expressing its discomfort
through thoughts, feelings, and behaviors .
• Mental illnesses also called mental disorders or
psychiatric disorders are health conditions involving
changes in emotion, thinking or behavior or a
combination of these. Mental illnesses are associated
with distress or problems functioning in social, work
or family activities.
• Mental illnesses are of different types and degrees of severity. Some of
the major types are depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar mood
disorders, personality disorders, and eating disorders.
Causes of mental disorders:
There is no single cause for mental illness. Several factors can contribute to
risk for mental illness, such as:
• Family history
• Life experiences, such as stress or a history of abuse, especially if they
happen in childhood
• Biological factors such as chemical imbalances in the brain
• A traumatic brain injury
• A mother's exposure to viruses or toxic chemicals while pregnant
• Use of alcohol or recreational drugs
• Having a serious medical condition like cancer
• Having few friends, and feeling lonely or isolated

1-Psycoanalytical theory

Social conditions are largely responsible for deviant behavior
( poverty, family problems, inadequate education) can predispose
person to mental illness.

the self system develops (bad me- not me) it leading
to anxiety because it includes a threat to rejection
