The structures on roads viz. Bridges,ROBs (Road Over Bridges, and Flyovers),RUBs (Road under
Bridges)etc. are designed for m ore than 50 years. Itis difficultto increase the w idth ofthe structures
ata later date w hich m ay also have larger financialim plicationsapartfrom construction related issues
in running traffic. Therefore,it has been decided to keep provision for allthe structures including
approachescom prising ofretaining structuresas6-lane (length ofsuch approachesshall,in no case,be
lessthan 30m on either side)on allthe four-lane highw aysexceptin the follow ing cases:-
i. Reserve Forest
ii. W ild life Areas
iii. Hilly Areas
iv. Urban Areas
W here site condition do not perm it this. W herever elevated sections are designed through any

IRC specifications, hasproved to be insufficientkeeping in view the increased use ofm echanization in
agriculture practices. These structuresdo notsupportthe easy passage / crossing for the tractorsw ith
trolleys so often used for agriculturaloperations. As traffic on cross roads is increasing day-by-day,it
hasbeen decided to substitute the provision ofPedestrian Underpass (PUP)/ Cattle Underpass(CUP)
[for para 2.10 ofIRC specifiesthe dim ensionsof7.0m x 3.0m ]w ith a LVUP w ith a m inim um size of12

3.6.1 General

pacity
analysis is fundam entalto the planning, design and operation ofroads and provides,am ong other things, the
basis for determ ining the carriagew ay w idth to be provided atany pointin a road netw ork w ith respectto the
volum e and com position oftraffic. Moreover, itis a valuable toolfor evaluation ofthe investm ents needed for
future road constructionsand im provem ents.

3.6.1.1 E uivalency Factors

The need of expressing capacity in passenger car units has triggered off m any studies for establishing
appropriate passenger car equivalency (PCE)values for differenttypes ofvehicles. Notable am ong the studies
carried outin India are the road user coststudies(RUCS)by CRRIand the MoRT&H. Ithasbeen recognized that
the PCE valuesvary under differenttraffic, roadw ay conditionsand com position for any given type ofvehicle.
Equivalency Factor isa factor to convertthe m ixed flow oftrafficin to single unitto expressthe capacity ofroad.
The unitgenerally em ployed isthe passenger car unit(PCU). The equivalency factorsfor conversion ofdifferent
typesofvehiclesin to equivalentpassenger car unitsbased on their relativeinterferencevaluearegiven in Table

3.6.2.1 Free Flow Speed

An im portantelem entofthe speed flow curves ofthe projectroads is the free flow speed. Itis the speed at
w hich driver feelcom fortable travelling under the physical, environm entaland traffic controlconditions on a
non-congested section ofa m ulti-lanehighw ay,-HCM (2000). Allrecentstudies suggestthatspeed on project
road is insensitive to flow over a broad range offlow s. Thus free-flow speed can be established on an existing
facility by m easuring in the field, the average speed ofvehiclesw hen flow ratesdo notexceed. In the absence of
trafficflow speed data on highw ay in India, the free flow speed isrequired to be assum ed.

3.6.2.2 Factors affecting the Free Flow Speed (FFS):

The FFS ofan expressw ay dependson the trafficand roadw ay conditionsdescribed below :

1.5 1.0 0.6 0.3 0.2
1.2 2.0 1.3 0.6 0.3

For the projectroad, the leftshoulder w idth isgreater than 1.8,hence adjustm entfactor is0.0.
Adjustment factor for Number of Lanes (fN):
For ruralfacilitiesfN issetas0.

Adjustment factor for Interchange density (fID)

Since the m inim um interchange spacing m ore than 4 km s,the adjustm entfactor for interchange density isset
as0.
The using Equation (1)w e get
FFS=120-0-0-0-0

FFS = 120km ph

Calculation of Base Capacity (Base Cap)

The base capacity (pcphpl)ofan expressw ay facility isgiven by
ase Capacity 1700 10 S for S 112 -----------------------E 2
ase Capacity 2 00 for S 112 -----------------------------------E
Since,the FFS is(120km ph)>112km ph,base capacity =2400pcphpl

Determination of Pea Capacity (Pea Cap)

The peak capacity isgiven by,
Peak Cap = Base Cap*PHF*N*fHV*fP
W here,

Peak Capacity = Peak capacity, vehiclesper hour (alllanes, one direction)

PHF = Peak Hour Factor;0 .88 so as to maintain LOS B always on Expressway
N = Num ber oflanesin one direction (2 for 4-lane);3 for one direction flow on Expressway

fHV = Adjustm entfactor for heavy vehicles;0.8253 for expressway as calculated below
fP = Adjustm entfactor for driver population;0.975 for rural expressways
Assign a finalPHF isgiven in Table 3.4.:

For the projectroad the PHF of0.88 hasbeen considered.

Adjustment factor for Heavy Vehicles (fHV)
The adjustm entfactor for heavy vehiclesisbased on calculating passenger car equivalentsfor trucksand buses.
fHV = 1/(1+PT(ET-1))

W here,
PT= Proportion oftrucksand busesin the trafficstream ;42% asper trafficprojections
ET=Passenger car Equivalents;1.5 for ruralexpressw aysin levelterrain.
The fHV factor for the expressw ay using the above equation is0.8253.

Adjustment factor for Driver Population (fP)

On ruralexpressw ays,the factor issetto 0.975 buthasbeen considered as1.0 for the projectroad.
